PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE DOCUMENT - it's not long...
1) This editor is NOT derived from any other work. It was created
from scratch by me, Geoff Allan. The nodes builder, which was
from DEU, is being replaced with a port from Id's own, which
they graciously released. This port is being done by me, Geoff Allan.
Several people who are associated with the DEU project were
mouthing off all around the Internet that this is "DEU with a
graphical shell around it". That is not even remotely true. The
DEU source code specifically gives anyone the right to use the
source for their own purposes. Apparently they don't REALLY want
that to happen.
2) This editor was, in a previous incarnation, able to edit the
Shareware version of Doom. That was a mistake. The code was in
place to detect that the user actually was using the registered
version, unfortunately I commented it out back in March to test
something. I forgot to replace the code. This was an error, and I
never intended to release a version which could edit the Shareware
version. I apologize to everyone, and an apology WAS forwared to
Id, along with this explanation.
3) The Id License agreement specifically allows for registered users
to create their own maps. Since Id has not released a map editor,
I and several others have decoded the data structure and built
our own editors. This has received tacit approval by Id, as
evidenced by their agreement entered into with all map editor
authors.
4) It has always been my intention, from December 11, 1993 when I
received Shareware Doom, to create a map editor which was as easy
to use as possible. Several other editors exist which allow you
to create maps, but they also require a rather thorough under-
standing of how maps work. My goal is to make it as easy as drawing
your idea. All of the gritty details should be looked after by the
editor. That remains my goal.
5) Other than this document which specifically mentions "DEU", I
refuse to enter into any argument regarding the relative merits
or failings of this or any other editor. Everyone is entitled to
their own preferences, yourself included. For my part, I hope that
you prefer THIS editor. Any other attitude would be unprofessional,
and rather childish, I think. This is policy for me and all others
who are in any way attached to this project. Any nasty messages
about other editors DO NOT COME FROM THIS CAMP.
