  22. I do recommend to read at least chapter 4 - What does 
  23. CFe IE4 Folder Icon Wizard do - as this utility makes use 
  24. of an undocumented feature of Internet Explorer 4.0. If 
  25. you do not feel comfortable with this, then I recommend 
  26. unsinstalling the Wizard and not using it.

  29. 0.) IMPORTANT !!! Before using !!!
  30. ----------------------------------
  31. Before using the wizard the first time from a folders
  32. context menu, go to the wizards options and check the
  33. "Include in Context Menu Option" and Press "OK". (This fixes
  34. a little bug with the installation software, which would
  35. prevent folders with blanks in their names to be recognized
  36. if the wizard is launched from the context menu).

  39. 1.) Licensing information
  40. -------------------------
  41. The CFe IE4 folder icon wizard is distributed as freeware, 
  42. which means, that there is no additional charge for using 
  43. it. For legal licensing information, please refer to the 
  44. "license.txt" file as your usage of the software indicates 
  45. acceptance of the rules and conditions set in this
  46. document.

  51. 2.) Installation
  52. ----------------
  53. To install CFe IE4 folder icon wizard, unzip the entire 
  54. package into an empty folder and execute the file "setup.exe". 
  55. After the installation process has finished you can delete 
  56. the files in the temporary installation
  57. folder safely.

  60. 3.) Uninstall procedures
  61. ------------------------
  62. To uninstall this software, go to the control panel, select 
  63. the "Software" icon, then the "CFe IE4 Folder Icon Wizard" 
  64. entry in the "Install/Uninstall" tab. Follow the instructions 
  65. on your screen.

  67. To uninstall the software manually, remove the folder where 
  68. you installed CFe IE4 Folder Icon Wizard. Then open 
  69. "regedit.exe". IMPORTANT: BE SURE TO BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY 
  70. FIRST. Then remove every key "/Software/CFe/Icon Wizard/" 
  71. and subkeys.

  73. You can also reinstall the software and follow the uninstallation 
  74. procedure above.

  76. NOTE: No "desktop.ini" file created or modified with the Icon 
  77. Wizard is restored to its original state. The "desktop.ini" files 
  78. are left as is. This also applies to the system attributes 
  79. assigned to folders. You have to remove them manually.

  82. 4.) What does CFe IE4 Folder Icon Wizard do?
  83. --------------------------------------------
  84. The Icon Wizard makes use of an undocumented feature of Microsoft
  85. Internet Explorer 4.0x. When IE4 is installed, you can create a file
  86. called "desktop.ini" in each and every folder. This file can contain
  87. several settings, e.g. which icon to display for the folder the file
  88. is stored in. Apart from that, many new extensions make use of the
  89. "desktop.ini" file. I have tested the icon wizard heavily, but cannot
  90. deny side effects. See "Konwn Issues" for details.

  92. When you run the wizard, new "desktop.ini" files will be created in
  93. the selected folders. In no case, the wizard will delete an existing
  94. file. Before deleting a "desktop.ini" file manually, make sure, that
  95. it is not used for anything special. Most of the time, this is the 
  96. case, when you only have an "IconIndex=" and "IconFile=" entry. If
  97. there are other entries like "ConfirmFileOp" or anything else, then
  98. be very carefully deleting this file.

  100. Apart from creating or modifying a "desktop.ini" file, the folder
  101. will get a "system file" attribute.

  104. 5.) Known Issues
  105. ----------------
  106. Currently the following issues are known and have been reported by
  107. other users.
  108.  
  109. - System file attribute:
  110.   In order for the icon to be displayed, the folder must have the
  111.   "system file attribute". This can cause the folder to be hidden 
  112.   from several applications, including the dosshell. The attribute 
  113.   can't be set from within windows. To set or remove the system 
  114.   attribute, shell to do and type the following:
  115.  
  116.   attrib +s <foldername> to set the system attribute
  117.   attrib -s <foldername> to remove the system attribute
  118.  
  119.   <foldername> is to be replaced with the full path to the selected 
  120.   folder.
  121.  
  122.   When a file has the system attribute it is not visible when 
  123.   typing "dir" in a dosshell. This can be fixed by typing 
  124.  
  125.   dir /a
  126.  
  127.   which will display all files (including hidden and system files).
  128.  
  129. - Viewing icons over a network.
  130.   When modifying folders on a network computer, others will not see the 
  131.   icons unless they have Internet Explorer 4.0 installed.

  137. ----------------------
  138. Please remember, that this software is freeware and there is no such
  139. thing as technical support. However, if you find a bug or have a
  140. question, then send mail to cf@magnet.at .

  143. have the time and resources to answer questions like "Why does the
  144. software not work on my special computer with the following special
  145. hardware, etc.".

  148. be released. New versions will be released as I have time and will be
  149. announced on the CFe Free Windows 95 Tools homepage, Windows95.com and
