I do recommend to read at least chapter 4 - What does
CFe IE4 Folder Icon Wizard do - as this utility makes use
of an undocumented feature of Internet Explorer 4.0. If
you do not feel comfortable with this, then I recommend
unsinstalling the Wizard and not using it.
0.) IMPORTANT !!! Before using !!!
----------------------------------
Before using the wizard the first time from a folders
context menu, go to the wizards options and check the
"Include in Context Menu Option" and Press "OK". (This fixes
a little bug with the installation software, which would
prevent folders with blanks in their names to be recognized
if the wizard is launched from the context menu).
1.) Licensing information
-------------------------
The CFe IE4 folder icon wizard is distributed as freeware,
which means, that there is no additional charge for using
it. For legal licensing information, please refer to the
"license.txt" file as your usage of the software indicates
acceptance of the rules and conditions set in this
document.
Vendors please refer to "vendors.txt" for details.
2.) Installation
----------------
To install CFe IE4 folder icon wizard, unzip the entire
package into an empty folder and execute the file "setup.exe".
After the installation process has finished you can delete
the files in the temporary installation
folder safely.
3.) Uninstall procedures
------------------------
To uninstall this software, go to the control panel, select
the "Software" icon, then the "CFe IE4 Folder Icon Wizard"
entry in the "Install/Uninstall" tab. Follow the instructions
on your screen.
To uninstall the software manually, remove the folder where
you installed CFe IE4 Folder Icon Wizard. Then open
"regedit.exe". IMPORTANT: BE SURE TO BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY
FIRST. Then remove every key "/Software/CFe/Icon Wizard/"
and subkeys.
You can also reinstall the software and follow the uninstallation
procedure above.
NOTE: No "desktop.ini" file created or modified with the Icon
Wizard is restored to its original state. The "desktop.ini" files
are left as is. This also applies to the system attributes
assigned to folders. You have to remove them manually.
4.) What does CFe IE4 Folder Icon Wizard do?
--------------------------------------------
The Icon Wizard makes use of an undocumented feature of Microsoft
Internet Explorer 4.0x. When IE4 is installed, you can create a file
called "desktop.ini" in each and every folder. This file can contain
several settings, e.g. which icon to display for the folder the file
is stored in. Apart from that, many new extensions make use of the
"desktop.ini" file. I have tested the icon wizard heavily, but cannot
deny side effects. See "Konwn Issues" for details.
When you run the wizard, new "desktop.ini" files will be created in
the selected folders. In no case, the wizard will delete an existing
file. Before deleting a "desktop.ini" file manually, make sure, that
it is not used for anything special. Most of the time, this is the
case, when you only have an "IconIndex=" and "IconFile=" entry. If
there are other entries like "ConfirmFileOp" or anything else, then
be very carefully deleting this file.
Apart from creating or modifying a "desktop.ini" file, the folder
will get a "system file" attribute.
5.) Known Issues
----------------
Currently the following issues are known and have been reported by
other users.
- System file attribute:
In order for the icon to be displayed, the folder must have the
"system file attribute". This can cause the folder to be hidden
from several applications, including the dosshell. The attribute
can't be set from within windows. To set or remove the system
attribute, shell to do and type the following:
attrib +s <foldername> to set the system attribute
attrib -s <foldername> to remove the system attribute
<foldername> is to be replaced with the full path to the selected
folder.
When a file has the system attribute it is not visible when
typing "dir" in a dosshell. This can be fixed by typing
dir /a
which will display all files (including hidden and system files).
- Viewing icons over a network.
When modifying folders on a network computer, others will not see the
icons unless they have Internet Explorer 4.0 installed.
For answers to frequently asked questions, please refer to faq.txt.
6.) How to get support
----------------------
Please remember, that this software is freeware and there is no such
thing as technical support. However, if you find a bug or have a
question, then send mail to cf@magnet.at .
I will try to answer every question. Please understand that I do not
have the time and resources to answer questions like "Why does the
software not work on my special computer with the following special
hardware, etc.".
I will also not answer questions about when new versions are going to
be released. New versions will be released as I have time and will be
announced on the CFe Free Windows 95 Tools homepage, Windows95.com and
CNet Freeware.com (in this order). I also will upload a copy to
winsite.com.
