  42. INSTALLATION AND "BRANDING" INSTRUCTIONS

  45.    This section explains how to install a downloaded copy of
  46.    Take Command/32.
  47.    
  48.    [If you have a copy on diskette or CD, or a copy purchased
  49.    electronically, we assume you have already completed the installation
  50.    -- otherwise this file would not be visible!  If you need to
  51.    reinstall your purchased copy of Take Command/32, just restart
  52.    the INSTALL program.]
  53.  
  54.    There are just three steps you need to take to install a downloaded
  55.    copy of Take Command/32:
  56.  
  57.       >> Extract all the files to a new directory (do not use a directory
  58.          you're using for other products, or for a previous version of
  59.          Take Command/32).
  60.  
  61.       >> Start Take Command/32.  It will "install itself".
  62.  
  63.       >> If you are upgrading a previously purchased copy, "brand"
  64.          Take Command/32 with your name and serial number if necessary.
  65.  
  66.    Additional details on these steps are below.  For branding and manual
  67.    installation instructions see the sections with those headings below.
  68.  
  69.    Special note for those installing Take Command/32 under Windows NT
  70.    3.5 (this does not apply to Windows 95 or to Windows NT 4.0):
  71.  
  72.       Take Command/32 is distributed with a Microsoft library called
  73.       CTL3D32.DLL, which is also used by many other applications.  Under
  74.       Windows NT 3.5 this library must be stored in your \WINNT\SYSTEM32
  75.       directory, and removed from the Take Command/32 directory, before
  76.       you start Take Command/32.
  77.       
  78.       In most cases you will already have a copy of CTL3D32 in your
  79.       \WINNT\SYSTEM32 directory.  If so, check the date and time of that
  80.       file vs. the version which came with Take Command.  If you do not
  81.       have a copy of CTL3D32, or the copy which came with Take Command
  82.       is newer than the copy already on your system, copy the Take
  83.       Command CTL3D32.DLL file to \WINNT\SYSTEM32.  Then, whether or not
  84.       you copied the file, delete it from the Take Command directory
  85.       (Windows NT may not load Take Command properly with multiple
  86.       copies of this file on the system).

  88.    You can view any of the documentation files on-line, or copy them to
  89.    your printer.  The Introduction and Installation Guide in TCMD32.TXT
  90.    has page breaks, headers and footers; all other documentation files
  91.    are unpaginated ASCII text.

  94. "Self-Installation"
  95.  
  96.    To begin the installation process, simply run the program file,
  97.    TCMD32.EXE, from your desktop.  This will automatically start the
  98.    self-installation file _TCINST.BTM, which will finish installing
  99.    Take Command/32 on your system.
  100.  
  101.    _TCINST will prompt you for permission before each installation step,
  102.    and no system files will be modified without asking you first.
  103.    
  104.    When the installation is finished, _TCINST renames itself to _TCINST.BTX,
  105.    so that it will not be run again.  (If installation terminates
  106.    abnormally, _TCINST may not be renamed, and will then run again the
  107.    next time you start the program.)

  110. Manual Installation
  111.  
  112.    For complete manual installation instructions, see the Introduction
  113.    and Installation Guide in the file TCMD32.TXT.  The detailed
  114.    instructions for Take Command/32 are in Chapter 6.

  116.    If you choose to perform a manual installation you should rename the
  117.    automated installation file, _TCINST.BTM (we recommend renaming it to
  118.    _TCINST.BTX, which is what the file itself does when it's finished).
  119.    If you don't, it will start automatically the first time you run
  120.    Take Command/32.

  123. Branding
  124.  
  125.    If you are upgrading from a previously purchased copy you may need to
  126.    run the "branding" program to install your name and serial number
  127.    in Take Command/32 (trial version users can skip this section).
  128.  
  129.    Your previous version's brand program may be the older version named
  130.    BRAND.EXE, or the newer version named BRTC32.EXE.
  131.  
  132.    If you are installing this version as a maintenance release from
  133.    version 2.00, and you branded version 2.00 with the newer
  134.    BRTC32.EXE brand program, then in most cases you can skip the
  135.    remainder of this section because your name and serial number will be
  136.    transferred automatically to your new copy of Take Command/32.
  137.  
  138.    If you are unsure of how the previous version was branded, or if you
  139.    find that the name and serial number are not transferred for any
  140.    reason, follow the instructions below to brand your new version.  You
  141.    will also need the instructions below if you previously used a "file
  142.    brand" following special instructions from our technical support
  143.    department.
  144.    
  145.    In order to perform the branding you will need the brand program, and
  146.    the registered name, serial number, and validation code which came
  147.    with your purchased copy of Take Command/32.
  148.  
  149.    (If you have lost your branding information it is replaceable, but a
  150.    small charge is required as recreating the codes is a multi-step
  151.    process.  To request replacement codes contact JP Software at
  152.    sales@jpsoft.com, or at one of the addresses listed at the start of
  153.    this file.)

  155.    The older BRAND.EXE program modifies the TCMD32.EXE file, and can only
  156.    be used while Take Command/32 is not running.  To use it:
  157.  
  158.       (1) Exit from all copies of Take Command/32.
  159.  
  160.       (2) Start a command prompt session (use another JP Software
  161.       product, or the operating system's built-in command processor).
  162.  
  163.       (3) Change to the directory where TCMD32.EXE is installed, and
  164.       verify that both TCMD32.EXE and BRAND.EXE are in that directory.
  165.  
  166.       (4) Locate the branding information which came with your copy of
  167.       Take Command/32 (information from other products won't work!).
  168.  
  169.       (5) Enter the command BRAND and follow the instructions on the
  170.       screen.
  171.    
  172.    The newer BRTC32.EXE program does not have the same restrictions, and
  173.    can be run using this simpler procedure:
  174.  
  175.       (1) Start Take Command/32.
  176.  
  177.       (2) Change to the directory where TCMD32.EXE is installed, and
  178.       verify that both TCMD32.EXE and BRTC32.EXE are in that directory.
  179.  
  180.       (3) Locate the branding information which came with your copy of
  181.       Take Command/32.
  182.  
  183.       (4) Enter the command BRTC32 and follow the instructions on the
  184.       screen.

  186.    If you attempt to brand your downloaded copy and receive the message
  187.    "brand installation error 4" or "contact JP Software or your dealer
  188.    for an upgrade", then you are not eligible to download and brand a
  189.    trial version of this release -- instead, you must purchase the
  190.    upgrade.  See UPGFORM.TXT for an order form.  Once you have ordered
  191.    an upgrade you can continue to use the trial version until your
  192.    upgrade arrives.

  194.    If you receive any other error, you have probably mistyped your name,
  195.    serial number, or validation code, or are attempting to use the brand
  196.    program or codes from one product with another product, which will
  197.    not work.

  210.       anywhere on your system by entering only part of its name.  See
  211.       Directory Navigation in the help for complete details.

  213.    >> Caveman technology is now included in Take Command/32, allowing
  214.       you to run many character-mode applications directly within the
  215.       Take Command window.

  217.    >> You can directly execute URLs, and files with Windows
  218.       associations, from the Take Command/32 prompt.
