  42. INSTALLATION AND "BRANDING" INSTRUCTIONS

  45.    This section explains how to install a downloaded copy of
  46.    4NT.
  47.    
  48.    [If you have a copy on diskette or CD, or a copy purchased
  49.    electronically, we assume you have already completed the installation
  50.    -- otherwise this file would not be visible!  If you need to
  51.    reinstall your purchased copy of 4NT, just restart
  52.    the INSTALL program.]
  53.  
  54.    There are just three steps you need to take to install a downloaded
  55.    copy of 4NT:
  56.  
  57.       >> Extract all the files to a new directory (do not use a directory
  58.          you're using for other products, or for a previous version of
  59.          4NT).
  60.  
  61.       >> Start 4NT.  It will "install itself".
  62.  
  63.       >> If you are upgrading a previously purchased copy, "brand"
  64.          4NT with your name and serial number if necessary.
  65.  
  66.    Additional details on these steps are below.  For branding and manual
  67.    installation instructions see the sections with those headings below.
  68.  
  69.    You can view any of the documentation files on-line, or copy them to
  70.    your printer.  The Introduction and Installation Guide in 4NT.TXT
  71.    has page breaks, headers and footers; all other documentation files
  72.    are unpaginated ASCII text.

  75. "Self-Installation"
  76.  
  77.    To begin the installation process, simply run the program file,
  78.    4NT.EXE, from a prompt or from your desktop.  This will
  79.    automatically start the self-installation file _4INST.BTM, which will
  80.    finish installing 4NT on your system.
  81.  
  82.    _4INST will prompt you for permission before each installation step,
  83.    and no system files will be modified without asking you first.
  84.    
  85.    When the installation is finished, _4INST renames itself to _4INST.BTX,
  86.    so that it will not be run again.  (If installation terminates
  87.    abnormally, _4INST may not be renamed, and will then run again the
  88.    next time you start the program.)

  91. Manual Installation
  92.  
  93.    For complete manual installation instructions, see the Introduction
  94.    and Installation Guide in the file 4NT.TXT.  The detailed
  95.    instructions for 4NT are in Chapter 7.

  97.    If you choose to perform a manual installation you should rename the
  98.    automated installation file, _4INST.BTM (we recommend renaming it to
  99.    _4INST.BTX, which is what the file itself does when it's finished).
  100.    If you don't, it will start automatically the first time you run
  101.    4NT.

  104. Branding
  105.  
  106.    If you are upgrading from a previously purchased copy you may need to
  107.    run the "branding" program to install your name and serial number
  108.    in 4NT (trial version users can skip this section).
  109.  
  110.    Your previous version's brand program may be the older version named
  111.    BRAND.EXE, or the newer version named BR4NT.EXE.
  112.  
  113.    If you are installing this version as a maintenance release from
  114.    version 3.00, and you branded version 3.00 with the newer
  115.    BR4NT.EXE brand program, then in most cases you can skip the
  116.    remainder of this section because your name and serial number will be
  117.    transferred automatically to your new copy of 4NT.
  118.  
  119.    If you are unsure of how the previous version was branded, or if you
  120.    find that the name and serial number are not transferred for any
  121.    reason, follow the instructions below to brand your new version.  You
  122.    will also need the instructions below if you previously used a "file
  123.    brand" following special instructions from our technical support
  124.    department.
  125.    
  126.    In order to perform the branding you will need the brand program, and
  127.    the registered name, serial number, and validation code which came
  128.    with your purchased copy of 4NT.
  129.  
  130.    (If you have lost your branding information it is replaceable, but a
  131.    small charge is required as recreating the codes is a multi-step
  132.    process.  To request replacement codes contact JP Software at
  133.    sales@jpsoft.com, or at one of the addresses listed at the start of
  134.    this file.)

  136.    The older BRAND.EXE program modifies the 4NT.EXE file, and can only
  137.    be used while 4NT is not running.  To use it:
  138.  
  139.       (1) Exit from all copies of 4NT.
  140.  
  141.       (2) Start a command prompt session (use another JP Software
  142.       product, or the operating system's built-in command processor).
  143.  
  144.       (3) Change to the directory where 4NT.EXE is installed, and
  145.       verify that both 4NT.EXE and BRAND.EXE are in that directory.
  146.  
  147.       (4) Locate the branding information which came with your copy of
  148.       4NT (information from other products won't work!).
  149.  
  150.       (5) Enter the command BRAND and follow the instructions on the
  151.       screen.
  152.    
  153.    The newer BR4NT.EXE program does not have the same restrictions, and
  154.    can be run using this simpler procedure:
  155.  
  156.       (1) Start 4NT.
  157.  
  158.       (2) Change to the directory where 4NT.EXE is installed, and
  159.       verify that both 4NT.EXE and BR4NT.EXE are in that directory.
  160.  
  161.       (3) Locate the branding information which came with your copy of
  162.       4NT.
  163.  
  164.       (4) Enter the command BR4NT and follow the instructions on the
  165.       screen.
  166.  
  167.    If you attempt to brand your downloaded copy and receive the message
  168.    "brand installation error 4" or "contact JP Software or your dealer
  169.    for an upgrade", then you are not eligible to download and brand a
  170.    trial version of this release -- instead, you must purchase the
  171.    upgrade.  See UPGFORM.TXT for an order form.  Once you have ordered
  172.    an upgrade you can continue to use the trial version until your
  173.    upgrade arrives.

  175.    If you receive any other error, you have probably mistyped your name,
  176.    serial number, or validation code, or are attempting to use the brand
  177.    program or codes from one product with another product, which will
  178.    not work.
