Story=INTRODUCTION
Story=ABOUT OTTO DIX(1891-1969):
Story=(Compiled by Helen Adkins from the book: The 1920s: Age of Metropolis, Edited by Jean Clair, The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, 1991)
Story=A German painter,graphic artist and engraver, Otto Dix was the main representative of Neue Sachlichkeit. After an apprenticeship as a painter-decorator, he studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Dresden. During the War he was sent to the front and he devoted himself to reading Nietzsche. From 1919 to 1922, he studied fine arts at the Kunstakademie in Dresden where he was a founding member of the Secession. After a short association with the Dadaists of Berlin and Cologne, he was a private student of Heinrich Nauen at the Dusseldorf Akademie and frequented the artists in the Junges Rheinland group around patron Johanna Ey. In 1925, he moved to Berlin, and then in 1927 to Dresden to teach at the Akademie. He was dismissed in 1933, and a year later he was prohibited from exhibiting. The Nazis accused him of demoralizing the army and degrading German women. In 1936, he withdrew from artistic life, making a sort of "domestic emigration" to the south of Germany. A year later, the Nazis confiscated two hundred and sixty of his works in public collections in Germany.
Story=Dix's first portraits, influenced by Jan van Eyck and Lucas Cranach, reveal a proto-objectivity. During the War, he ceaselessly documented the events at the front, ridiculing the cult of the war hero. In his biting verism, he presented, often allegorically, a panorama of social conditions during the Weimar Republic. Prostitution, street life and the ugliness of this period were his favourite subjects. His critiques are bitter, but not devoid of political ideaology. Alongside his "lacklustre beings" he painted portraits of his friends and others. His portraits are never intended to flatter but express the subject's true character.

Story=YOUR OPPONENTS
Story=
Story=Sylvia is the most aggressive player. She will attempt to Shoot the Moon more frequently than Otto or Hugo, and will be more willing to take a heart in pursuit of the jack of diamonds or other goals. Her whole name is Sylvia von Harden. She is a journalist and she was painted in 1926 by Otto Dix. Her portrait currently hangs in the Pompidou museum in Paris.
Story=
Story=Otto is the most conservative. Don't expect him to Shoot the Moon too often, and when he does, be very afraid. Otto's whole name is Otto Dix. He is a German painter from the early part of this century. This self-portrait of Otto is from 1912 and currently hangs in The Detroit Institute of the Arts.
Story=
Story=Hugo is somewhere in between. An enthusiastic participant, he is there to play, as well as to win. His whole name is Hugo Erfurth and he is a photographer. He too is from a portrait by Otto Dix from 1925, currently on display at the Staatsgalerie moderner Kunst in Munich.

RegUsers=SPECIAL THANKS FROM MICHAEL ROSENZWEIG
RegUsers=To my wife Carla Kissel and my daughter Emma for putting up with my anti-social behavior of spending long hours at the Mac, which I only sometimes share with them. Also, thanks to everyone with whom I've ever played a game of Hearts, especially A. Layne Young, Mike Davis, Norris Wang, Dave Fisher and Tom Steiner. Many of their stupid comments from hearts games past have been incorporated into the Telepathy Screen of this game!
