SECTION 1 - Feature Overview

The SmartDesk Virtual Machine is a binary collection of programs, libraries,
and utilities designed to enhance the Windows environment. Once installed,
the VM provides:

o Optimized development and runtime environment.
o Transparent runtime engine loads on demand or at bootup.
o Secure execution environment for VM enabled applications.
o Real-time status program with enhanced task manager.
o Password protected configuration management.
o Advanced resource and image caching.
o Standalone uninstaller with password protection.
o Network, Internet, and TCP/IP enabled.
o Integrates with and controls X-10 automation devices.
o Class libraries include file, image, window, animation,
multimedia, banners, marquees, and more.
o Full multitasking multithreaded execution support.
o Requires less than 1 MB disk space and 1 MB RAM.
o Support for Windows 3.1, Windows 95, and Windows NT.

SECTION 2 - System Requirements

Operating System: 16-bit Windows
32-bit Windows 95
32-bit Windows NT
Memory: 4 MB RAM minimum, 8 MB recommended
Disk Space: Less than 1 MB.
Additional Requirements:
MS Video for Windows must be installed, or the MSVIDEO.DLL
file must be present [Both can be downloaded free of charge
from the smartdesk web site at www.smartdesk.com/msvideo].

SECTION 3 - Installation

The SmartDesk Virtual Machine is provided as a downloadable self-extracting
file which has been compressed using WINZIP. The current release file
information is:
SDVM35.EXE dated April 1, 1998
To install:
1. Copy the SDVM35.EXE file to a temporary directory.
2. Run the SDVM35.EXE file and follow the on-screen instructions.
After the VM installs, the VMSTATUS program will automatically be
launched. It is not necessary to restart windows. By default, the VM
will only load when required. You can optionally set the VM to AUTOLOAD
when Windows starts via the OPTIONS portion of the VMSTATUS program.
The VM installer adds the following items to the SmartDesk program group
within the Windows program manager:

The following files constitute the SmartDesk Virtual Machine as provided
in the compressed SDVM31.EXE file:

sdload.ex_ Dynamic run-time loader.
sdloader.ex_ Interface for run-time loader.
sdesk32.ex_ 32-bit VM component
vmstatus.ex_ Status and configuration program.
sdrun.ex_ Main run-time engine.
sdimage.dl_ Image Library.
p3jpg16.dl_ JPEG support library.
sysclass.fl_ Primary system class libraries.
sdreg.fl_ SmartDesk Registration library.
mmedia.fl_ Multimedia class libraries.
sdvm.jp_ Single-frame machine image.

Files ending with an underscore character support the Microsoft
compress/decompress utilities for individual file extraction.

SECTION 6 - License Agreement & Warranty

Ok, the legal guys made us say it:
This stuff is ours, but you can use it as long as you are nice. It is
provided as-is without warranty as to its usability or suitability for
any particular task.
You can copy this stuff and distribute it to anybody you choose, provided
(1) you don't charge for our stuff, (2) you distribute it in its entirety,
and (3) you and the receiving party agree to abide by this agreement. If
you don't agree with this...please don't use our stuff. Besides, your use
of our stuff constitutes acceptance of this agreement.

If you are installing this version over a prior version of the VM,
please perform an uninstall first. After uninstalling, we HIGHLY
recommend restarting Windows before installing the new stuff.

SECTION 8 - Uninstalling
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
The SmartDesk VM can be running the SDUNSTL.EXE program in the WINDOWS
directory will also access the uninstaller.
A password to remove the VM is required only if one was setup via the
VMSTATUS program. In such event, the password must be entered before the
uninstaller will remove the VM.
After uninstalling, it is recommended (though not required) that Windows be
restarted.
