  4. This is an evaluation version of Instant ReportCard.
  5. It is identical in all functionality to the full
  6. version with two exceptions:
  7. - This evaluation version is limited to 3 students
  8.   in a class roster
  9. - The comment library included with this evaluation
  10.   version is drastically reduced from the one that
  11.   is included with the full version.

  14. What is Instant ReportCard?
  15. - Instant ReportCard is a program for writing textual report cards
  16.   which consist of comments about the student's progress rather
  17.   than grades.
  18. - Instant ReportCard lets you "write" report cards by selecting
  19.   appropriate comments from the accompanying library containing
  20.   over 400 comments.
  21. - Instant ReportCard personalizes the selected comments according
  22.   to the student's name and gender. It furthermore has the
  23.   capabilities of a wordprocessor, which means that you can at
  24.   any time modify what Instant ReportCard has "written", or type
  25.   spontaneous comments, without leaving the program.
  26. - Last, but not least, with Instant ReportCard you can augment
  27.   the supplied library of comments by creating your own personal
  28.   comment libraries. 
  29. - Printing of the report cards can be adjusted to forms used by
  30.   your schoolboard.

  32. Hardware and Software Requirements
  33. Instant ReportCard requires Windows 3.1 or later, Windows 95, or
  34. OS/2.

  36. Installation
  37. Copy or move the rptcard.exe file into a temporary directory (e.g.
  38. c:\install), then expand this self-extracting archive by executing
  39. it. Of course, if you are reading this, you may already have done
  40. that. Finally, run the program INSTALL.EXE by either
  41.  - double-clicking on INSTALL.EXE in file manager
  42.  - selecting RUN... from the File menu in either program manager
  43.    or file manager, and typing c:\install\install and pressing Enter.
  44. The install will create a directory RPTCARD on the hard drive,
  45. containing the following files:
  46. - RPTCARD.EXE    the Instant Report program
  47. - RPTCARD.HLP    the documentation and on-line help
  48. - COMMENTS.IRL    a library of comments for use with Instant
  49.         ReportCard. The comments in this library are
  50.         copyright Mrs. Lynda Smith. All rights reserved.
  51.         Licensed users of Instant ReportCard are granted
  52.         permission to use these comments to create report
  53.         cards with Instant ReportCard.
  54. - CTL3D.DLL    a windows file that creates the 3-dimensional
  55.         look of the dialogs used in Instant ReportCard.
  56.         This file can be moved to the system subdirectory in
  57.         your windows directory. If you already have this 
  58.         file in your windows\system directory, check the
  59.         dates on the two files and keep the newer one.
  60. - SPELMATE.DLL    a place holder for the spelling checker add-on. This
  61.         DLL does nothing, but its presence prevents file I/O
  62.         error messages during program start.

  64. Besides copying these files to the hard drive, the install process
  65. also creates a group with three icons in program manager. Double-
  66. Click on the first icon (labeled Instant ReportCard) to start the
  67. Instant ReportCard program.

  69. Accessories
  70. There are two extensions / accessories to Instant ReportCard available:
  71.    - spelling checker
  72.    - comment browser
  73. Spelling Checker is an add-on in the form of a DLL that lets you check
  74. the spelling of
  75.     (a) individual comments in a comment library,
  76.     (b) a single student's reportcard, whether created using comments
  77.         from comment libraries or spontaneously typed comments
  78.     (c) the reportcards of all students in a Instant ReportCard file.
  79. Comment Browser is a separate program that lets you view and print the
  80.     contents of the comment libraries.

  82. Individual Licensing
  83.  
  84. A $30 fee will license one copy of Instant ReportCard to you for
  85. use on any computer at any one time. You are the only one who is
  86. licensed to use the program, but you may copy and move Instant
  87. ReportCard to any number of computers or backup media. Since
  88. only the registered user is licensed, there can only be one of
  89. those copies in actual use at any one time.

  91. Site Licensing
  92.  
  93. A volume discount and site license are available to simplify the
  94. use of Instant ReportCard within schools. The volume discount
  95. covers 5 or more licenses for a fee of $25 Cdn ($20 US) per
  96. license. As with the individual license, Instant ReportCard may
  97. be copied or moved to any number of computers or backup media,
  98. but only staff of the licensed school may use the program and
  99. there must not be more than the number of licensed copies in
  100. use at any one time.
  101. A site license for $300 Cdn ($250 US) allows copying and internal
  102. use on an unlimited number of computers by an unlimited number of
  103. staff of the licensing school.
  104. The volume discount and site license are not available to
  105. individual users, only to schools.
  106. Volume discounts or site licenses for Spelling Checker and Comment
  107. Browser have not been established. Inquire if you are interested.

  109. When you request a volume discount or a site license, specify your
  110. school's name and address - as they should appear on the site
  111. license contract - on the registration form. An authorized copy
  112. of the site license will be mailed to you together with your
  113. registration number.

  115. Program Updates
  116.  
  117. First a word about the difference between version and release.
  118. - A version is a major change of the program with many or
  119.   important new features added. Versions are identified by the
  120.   first number in the Version string, e.g. 1.x denotes version 1.
  121. - Releases are smaller enhancements and are identified by the
  122.   number after the period e.g. 1.4 is release 4 of version 1.
  123. - Sometimes there is a third number, e.g. 1.3.1. The third
  124.   number is used if the change was merely bug fixes or cosmetic
  125.   changes without adding new features.

  127. Licensed users of Instant ReportCard are entitled to use future
  128. releases of Instant ReportCard without paying additional
  129. licensing fees.  A shipping and handling charge does apply,
  130. however. In general, users will not be notified directly of new
  131. releases, but you can inquire by phone or mail about the
  132. availability of upgrades.
  133. New versions will be available to licensed users for an upgrade
  134. fee which will be determined based on the added new features.
  135. Since the base price of Instant ReportCard is $30, expect
  136. upgrade fees to be in the range of $5-$10. Licensed users will
  137. be notified of new versions by mail.

  139. Warranty

  141. Instant ReportCard is supplied as is.  Macspertise hereby disclaims
  142. all warranties relating to this software, whether express or
  143. implied, including without limitation any implied warranties of
  144. merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose.  Macspertise
  145. will not be liable for any special, incidental, consequential,
  146. indirect or similar damages due to loss of data or any other
  147. reason, even if Macspertise, or an agent of Macspertise has been
  148. advised of the possibility of such damages. In no event shall
  149. Macspertise's liability for any damages ever exceed the price
  150. paid for the license to use the software, regardless of the form
  151. of the claim.  The person using the software bears all risk as to
  152. the quality and performance of the software.
