Amiga 1200 3.5" Harddisk mounting
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
By Hans Luyten (LUYTEN@KUB.NL)
1. remove the screws so you can lift the top of the A1200
2. gently remove the keyboard, the cable can be remove by softly lifting the
top of the keyboard-plug on the motherboard.
3. release the shield in the top-left part and cut the little platform
(see the IFF)
4. place the harddisk in the position as shown and mark the positions A and
B for driling holes and mounting the Harddisk with screws. You will
notice that the 3.5" FLOPPYdiskdrive is mounted the same way !
5. The IDE cable will go UNDER the harddisk to connector D.
6. The powersupply cable will go to position C.
7. remount the shield.
8. mount the harddisk (don't forget the cables!).
9. The keyboard cable will fit between the power and IDE cable and
clock-boards (like the BaseBoard 1200 Clock Calendar) will still fit!
10.remount the keyboard (gently)
11.put your beloved A1200 together and gently screw the screws back
(at first the might appear that the casing won't close, but I will!)
NOTE:
- You COULD put something to isolate (a piece of plastic) under
the harddisk. Be sure to use the right materials !!
- Use harddisks like the ST3290A (260Mb), ST3120A (100Mb),
ST3144A (124Mb) or ST3096A (84Mb) from Seagate.
These are slimline drives, cheap and reliable (other drives like
QUANTUM don't work !! Conner drives however work and are faster).
Some drive (like Western Digital) will be recognized AFTER a reset.
Most drives get a LOT faster with extra FASTRam.
- NEVER use to much force when screwing !! You'll only damage you Amiga !!
- ALWAY test the drive before mounting !!
- Build your own 2.5"-3.5" IDE cable or BUY one (BUYing is the easiest
and most reliable way!).
- Powercables are available in good PC-shops, or build your own.
- Be gently with the keyboardcable,.. it's very fragile.
- I DON'T take ANY responsibility on ANY damage !!
- This little doc is written after a build my own ST3290A in to my
Amiga 1200, which works GREAT.
