Welcome to the World Wide Catalog, Summer 1995 Edition.
The World Wide Catalog is your seamless directory of Internet resources.
If your computer is already connected to the Internet, these pages will
point you on your way - just click and you'll be there.
Of course, if you don't have an Internet connection, you'll get errors
if you try to follow links to external resources. But there are still
plenty of interesting pages to visit among the thousands of resources
included on the CD. Enjoy!

- - - Contents - - -
----------------------
The contents of this CD-ROM are:
readme this file (readme is Unix version, readme.txt is DOS)
wwc_home.htm Start here, your World Wide Catalog home page
util\ WWW browsers and networking software for MS Windows
pages\ the actual data pages on the CD
Point your browser at wwc_home.htm to get started, or see below for details.
Each page within the World Wide Catalog is identified with its source URL
and date of the copy. If you are connected to the internet, click on the
URL to go to the 'real' up-to-date version of the page.
Please note, we have tried to recreate the appearance of each of these
pages as closely as possible, given the restrictions of copyrights and
our collection processes. You may find some icons not loaded properly -
this is a result of our copyright permissions extending only to the
original server. Missing items are often located on other servers and
copyright permissions were unavailable.
Image maps and cgi-bin processes are typically not included. On the
internet, these are processed by programs specific to the server, not
your browser. This makes replication of the functions extremely difficult.
In most cases, a text version of the image map is available on the same page.

Please note, a CD-ROM is a static medium. The contents of this CD-ROM
are snapshots of a rapidly evolving resource, and should be considered
out-of-date. Please refer to the actual pages referenced as they currently
appear on the Internet. Their content is likely to have changed since
their data was captured for this distribution.

- - - Getting Started - - -
-----------------------------
Please refer to the on-line version of this readme file, found in the
base directory of the CD-ROM.
If you already have a web browser:
----------------------------------
If you already have a World Wide Web html browser installed, just use
the File Open command to open wwc_home.htm from the CD-ROM drive.
If you do not have a web browser:
---------------------------------
The World Wide Catalog includes both the Cello and I-COMM browsers.
If you are not connected to the internet, or only have an internet
shell account, we recommend using I-COMM shareware (registration is
required for continued use). You may also try Cello.
To install I-COMM:
------------------
From MS-Windows, use the File Manager or the File - Run menu command
to run \util\i-comm\setup.exe from the CD-ROM drive.
Once installed, use the File Manager to run bin\i-comm.exe from the
directory you chose for installation (C:\I-COMM by default).
From there, you will be in the I-Comm browser, and may open the
World Wide Catalog by choosing the appropriate drive letter of your CD-ROM,
or using the menu choice 'File' and 'Open Local' to open \wwc_home.htm
from the CD-ROM.
If you are not connected to the internet, you will occassionally notice
I-COMM attempting to download files and images. These will not be available
and you should press the STOP button. You can prevent unnecessary image
downloads by de-selecting the menu item 'Options' - 'Load In-Line Images'.
To run Cello:
-------------
Cello requires a WINSOCK.DLL file in your path. If you do not have one,
a NULL winsock is supplied on the CD-ROM. You may experience errors
on certain files as it attempts to load images from the sockets.
If you are running on a MS Windows PC and already have WINSOCK.DLL
installed, use the File Run menu choice to run util\cello\cello.exe
from the CD-ROM drive.
If you want to run Cello and don't have a working browser or WINSOCK.DLL
installed, you will need to do the following:
1) install WINSOCK.DLL in your path (NOTE: this is a NULL winsock, it does
not provide true winsock capabilities, but it does allow local browsing)
- add X:\util\cello to your PATH in your c:\autoexec.bat file
(where X is your CD-ROM drive letter)
- reboot your computer so that the new PATH takes effect
2) run CELLO
- start Windows
- From the Program Manager, choose File Run from the menu
- type X:\util\cello\cello and click OK
