Although we can't touch air, it has weight and exerts a pressure. At the Earth's surface the pressure of the atmosphere on your hand is equivalent to the weight of two sacks of potatoes!
Fortunately, because air is a gas this pressure acts in all directions. This means it also supports your hand from underneath. Otherwise you would never manage to put up your hand in class!
