  4. This archive contains the shareware version of Mathomatic, the algebraic
  5. manipulator.  A tutorial program is included.  This is an MS-DOS program, but
  6. it will work under Windows.
  7.  
  8. The shareware version of Mathomatic has been incorporated into the tutorial
  9. program to eliminate duplicated code.  The shareware version is fully
  10. functional and can now be directly accessed by using the included batch files.

  12. This archive may be freely distributed as long as none of the files inside are
  13. modified or missing.

  15. The files that should be in the archive are:

  17.   AC.BAT          Batch file for running Mathomatic in color mode.
  18.   ADV.TXT         Advertisement and description of Mathomatic.
  19.   AM.BAT          Batch file for running Mathomatic with no color.
  20.   AMEDIT.BAT      File containing the name of the editor to use.
  21.   AMTUTOR.EXE     The Mathomatic tutorial, demo, and program.
  22.   AMTUTOR.ICO     A Mathomatic icon you can load under Windows.
  23.   FILE_ID.DIZ     Short description of Mathomatic.
  24.   GRAPH.EXE       The Mathomatic Graph program (Requires EGA or VGA).
  25.   HERON.IN        Read this into Mathomatic for the area of a triangle.
  26.   LIMIT.IN        Read this into Mathomatic to learn how to do calculus limits.
  27.   ORDER.FRM       The Mathomatic registration form.
  28.   POINTS.IN       Read this into Mathomatic to get equations from 2/3 points.
  29.   README.TXT      This file.
  30.   TORUS.IN        Equations for a torus.

  32. To run the tutorial, type in "amtutor" at the DOS prompt.  If you have a color
  33. computer and you have the "ANSI.SYS" driver loaded, you can see how Mathomatic
  34. works in color by typing "amtutor -c" at the DOS prompt.  In color mode,
  35. Mathomatic outputs ANSI escape sequences to make each level of parentheses a
  36. different color.  To execute the shareware version of Mathomatic, select it
  37. from the tutorial main menu or type "am" at the DOS prompt (type "ac" for color
  38. mode).

  40. If you are going to use color mode, you will need to add the following line to
  41. your "\config.sys" file:

  43.      device = \dos\ansi.sys
  44.  
  45. In color mode, Mathomatic changes the default text color on your screen to
  46. green.  To run ANSI programs without changing the default text color, you need
  47. to set the default color you want in your MS-DOS prompt.  The procedure to do
  48. this is just one of many things described in the Mathomatic manual.

  50. You must have at least 640K of memory in your computer to run Mathomatic.
  51. Mathomatic runs on all IBM-PC and IBM-PC/AT compatibles with the MS-DOS
  52. operating system.  The Mathomatic "graph" command requires EGA or VGA and
  53. MS-DOS version 3.0 or higher.  A math coprocessor is recommended but not
  54. required.

  56. The number of equation spaces and the equation size are reduced in this
  57. shareware version of Mathomatic.

  59. Mathomatic is written in Microsoft C V5.1, is self-testing, and strictly
  60. follows the rules of algebra.  Mathomatic is powerful enough for users to check
  61. their answers/solutions.

  65. Registered users get the full sized version of Mathomatic with hardcopy manual.
  66. They also get my prime number tools and other goodies.  The full sized version
  67. has more equation spaces and allows equations three times larger than the
  68. shareware version allows.  And it allows approximation of definite integrals,
  69. which wasn't included in the shareware version because it needs to be explained
  70. by the Mathomatic manual.

  72. The prime number tools work with up to 14 digit numbers.  They factor integers
  73. and perform perfect number analysis and quickly generate any number of
  74. consecutive primes.

  76. To become a registered user and get the full sized version of Mathomatic,
  77. please do the following:

  79.   1) Print the file "ORDER.FRM".  At the DOS prompt, type: PRINT ORDER.FRM
  80.   2) Fill it out.
  81.   3) Make out a check or money order payable to "George Gesslein II".
  82.      It must be in U.S. dollars and drawn on a U.S. bank.

  103. Mathomatic is educational!  It even shows you how it solves an equation if you
  104. enter "debug 2" at the Mathomatic prompt before you solve an equation.  This
  105. sets debug level 2, to return to normal, just enter "debug 0".
