List contains 30+ individual definitions/explanations. /%/ [1/5] MISC - Extras ============= Additional options available when GolfCap is registered. /%/ [1/7] MISC - Quit =========== GolfCap quits and returns you to either the DOS prompt, Windows, or the menu from where it was called. /%/ [2/1] ADD - Game ========== Select this option when you wish to add a new Game Record to the database. If you have more than one Course Record in the database, you will be asked to select a Course from the "PickList". You really should bring your score card home with you to be assured of entering the requested information correctly. ■ There's no limit on the number of Games you can enter when GolfCap is registered. (DATE) ------ The 1st prompt will ask you for the date the game was played. If you are entering the information on the same day that the game was played, just press <Enter> and the current date will be entered for you. If you need to enter a different date, you must enter the date using the date format you selected when setting up GolfCap for the 1st time. The two formats are "MM-DD-YYYY" or "DD-MM-YYYY" with "MM" being the month, "DD" being the day and "YYYY" being the year. If the month is from Jan. - Sep (01 - 09) then you must enter a zero as the first digit. If the day is from the 1st - 9th (01 - 09) then you must also enter a zero "0" as the first digit here also. Entering a Month larger than 12 or a Day larger than 31 will not be accepted. If you attempt to enter a Month or Day smaller than 10 in the first space, it will automatically place a zero "0" there and jump to the second space. The Year must be entered using all four digits as in "1995." (PARTNERS) ---------- The next prompt will ask you for the name(s) of your playing partners for the game being entered. If you played alone, press <Enter> without typing anything here and this prompt will be skipped. When entering the names here, remember that this field is limited to 30 spaces so it might be best if you only enter the first names when entering more than 2 playing partners. (GREEN FEE - CART FEE) ---------------------- If you paid a Green fee and/or rented a cart enter the amount paid for the Green fee first (press <Enter> without typing anything here to skip this prompt) then, after entering the Green Fee amount you will be prompted for the amount you paid for cart rental. Skipping this prompt can be accomplished by the same method just mentioned for Green fee. (HOLES PLAYED) -------------- Here you enter the number of holes you played for this game. Only 2 figures will be accepted here; either 9 or 18. If you enter 9 then you will be asked if you played the front side (Holes 1-9) or the back side (holes 10-18). If the game is a 9-hole game, GolfCap will automatically select the score box for the front 9 or the back 9 depending on the side you indicated. If you entered 18, then GolfCap will display the score box for the entire 18-holes of the Course you selected earlier. (SCORES) -------- The score box will show the Hole # and the Par for each hole on the course. When entering scores here, you MUST NOT use the Arrow Keys (LeftArrow & RightArrow) to skip from box to box. Simply enter the score for the hole then press the <Enter> Key to go to the next hole. If you are a registered user of GolfCap AND you have an established Handicap Index AND you have indicated that you want to use the "Equitable Stroke Control" (ESC) rule, GolfCap will check each score as you enter it to see that it fits within the range of the ESC rule. If it's greater than the limit allowed, GolfCap will advise you and adjust the score accordingly. The maximum score for any hole is 25. The minimum score for any hole is 1. If you wish to stop before completing the Game Record, you may press the <F10> Key then press the <Enter> Key and you will be returned to the Main Menu. The record will not be saved if you use this means to exit early. After entering the scores for the first 9-holes, the 9-hole total score will be posted. The minimum score allowed for handicapping purposes is 27. The maximum score allowed depends on the golfer's age and sex. ■ A golfer who starts, but fails to complete, a hole should use a score based on the following: Handicap Score -------- ---------- 0 1 over PAR 1 - 18 2 over PAR 19 - 32 3 over PAR 33 and over 4 over PAR ■ If the golfer is using ESC, the above scores may be adjusted by GolfCap based on the golfer's Course Handicap. For more information regarding ESC, select "Definitions" under the Main Menu heading MISC. (GREENS) -------- Greens hit in regulation are based on each hole as follows: Hole Par Strokes to reach Green -------- ---------------------- Par 3 ........... 1 (Hit from Tee Box) Par 4 ........... 2 (Hit on 1st or 2nd shot) Par 5 ........... 3 (Hit on 2nd or 3rd shot) ■ Hitting greens on Par 4 holes on the first shot and Par 5 holes on the second shot are still considered hitting the green in regulation. ■ A ball landing on the green and rolling off is to be marked as a green missed. (TOTAL PUTTS) ------------- Enter the total number of Putts required to complete the game. This figure will be used when computing a golfer's Putting average. (FAIRWAYS HIT) -------------- Hitting a fairway in regulation means that your ball stops IN the Fairway on the FIRST shot off the Tee. Par 3 holes are NOT included in Fairway's hit. If you miss the Green on a par 3 hole and your ball stops in the Fairway, it's considered a Green missed and NOT a Fairway hit. ■ Looking at the percent of Fairways hit at the Summary Screen will give a good indication of how accurate you are with the Driver. (SAND SAVES) ------------ Sand Saves Attempted means the number of times you were in a green side sand trap. Sand traps alongside Fairways (also called "Fairway bunkers") are NOT to be used when entering the number of sand saves attempted. If you attempted no sand saves, press <Enter> here without typing a number and you will be moved to the next prompt. Sand Saves Made are the number of times you save Par after being in a green side sand trap. If you do not make Par on the hole where you were in a green side sand trap, then do not enter anything. You may skip this prompt by pressing <Enter> without entering a number. ■ Looking at the percent of Sand Saves attempted/made at the Summary Screen will give a golfer an indication of how well he/she uses sand wedges and whether or not this would be a part of his/her game the golfer needs to work on. (WAGERS) -------- If you make wagers with your playing partners while playing, enter the amount of money won here. In the event you have wagers with more than 1 person, if you won money from one and lost from another, enter amounts won from winning wagers then enter the amounts lost from losing wagers. GolfCap will automatically make the necessary calculations for you. Skip either/both these prompts, by pressing <Enter> without entering anything. (SAVE - STARTOVER - QUIT) ------------------------- After completing all the above information, you will be asked to <S>ave the record, Start<O>ver or <Q>uit without saving. Select one of these options and press the appropriate letter on your keyboard. Pressing "S" here will cause the record to be saved in the database and will allow it to be called up for review at any time along with all information recorded being included in the Summary for the golfer. When the <S>ave option is selected, GolfCap will automatically update the golfer's Handicap Index provided the golfer has a minimum of 5 or more 18-hole games saved in the database and is running the registered version of GolfCap. /%/ [2/3] ADD - Golfer ============ Information entered here is used by GolfCap when doing Handicaps, minimum and maximum scores, etc. It can be used also for keeping up with a player's age. A Golfer Record must be saved in the database before a Game Record can be added. ■ GolfCap permits only 1 Golfer record. If you need to maintain records for more than yourself, contact RiverBend SoftWare and inquire about GolfLog (1-8 Golfers) or GolfClub (7,500 Golfers). (FIRST and LAST NAME) --------------------- Enter the FIRST name of the golfer and press <Enter> to move to the prompt for the LAST name. DO NOT enter BOTH the first and last name at either of these prompts as GolfCap does some sorting based on the last name and it needs to know how to recognize it as being a legitimate last name or first name. (SEX) ----- GolfCap needs to know the sex of each golfer so proper handicap figures can be established. Also, the U.S.G.A. has established minimum and maximum allowable scores based on both sex and age. You will be required to enter either "M" or "F" at this prompt. It doesn't matter if you type it lower case or upper case ("m" or "F"), GolfCap will know the difference and adjust accordingly. (AGE) ----- GolfCap needs to know the age of the golfer so proper handicap figures can be established. Also, the U.S.G.A. has established minimum and maximum allowable scores based on both sex and age. You will be required to enter an age here that is over 4 and under 100. (HANDICAP INDEX) ---------------- If the golfer already has an established Handicap Index it should be entered at this prompt. If the golfer does not have a Handicap Index or it is not known, enter a zero and press <Enter> (SAVE - STARTOVER - QUIT) ------------------------- After completing all the above information, you will be asked if you want to <S>ave the record, Start<O>ver or <Q>uit without saving. Select one of these options and press the appropriate letter on your keyboard. Pressing "S" here will cause the record to be saved in the database and will allow it to be called up when adding a new Game Record. Mouse users may place the Mouse pointer on the letter inside the "< >" and click the LEFT Mouse button. /%/ [2/5] ADD - Course ============ After completing this requirement for a Course, you will not be required to enter it again. A Course Record is saved in the data- base and is available each time a new Game Record is entered or the Course Record is selected for editing or display. You MUST have at least one Course Record saved in the database before a Game Record can be entered. ■ There's no limit on the number of Courses you can have in GolfCap (COURSE NAME) ------------- Enter here the name of the Course or Club. This field is limited to 20 characters so abbreviations may be necessary such as "Riverlawn CC" rather than "Riverlawn Country Club." (CITY and STATE) ---------------- Enter here the name of the city/town where the course is located. Press <Enter> after entering the city and type the standard 2 letter Postal abbreviation for the state. (COURSE TYPE) ------------- If your course is one where you have only 9-holes and DOES NOT have provisions for playing it as an 18-hole course (such as 2 Tee boxes for each hole) then press "Y" here. If your course is an 18-hole course (or a 9-hole course with 2 sets of Tees for each hole) press "N" here. (COURSE PAR) ------------ You will next be asked to enter the Par for the front 9 (1-9) then the Par for the back 9 (10-18). After doing this GolfCap will display the Course Par. If your course is a true 9-hole course, you must enter the Par figure at the required prompt. (HOLE PARS) ----------- Next you will be required to enter the Par value for each hole on the course. After completing this requirement, GolfCap will check to be sure the front side Par value and the back side Par value matches the total of the individual holes just entered. If the figures do not match, GolfCap will display a message box advising you which of the sides do not match the Par value indicated at the top of the screen. ■ GolfCap does not accept Par values less than 3 or more than 5. (SLOPE and RATING) ------------------ The Course Pro/Manager should be able to make both of these figures available to you. Many courses have this information printed on the scorecard. If you have these figures then enter them at the next two prompts. The Slope is entered first and the next prompt will ask for the Rating of the course. These spaces MUST have a value as GolfCap uses them to determine the Handicap Index and Course Handicap. (CLUB PRO and TELEPHONE) ------------------------ The last 2 prompts ask you for the name of the club Pro/Manager and the telephone number. If this information is not known, press <Enter> to skip either or both of these prompts. (SAVE - STARTOVER - QUIT) ------------------------- After completing all the above information, you will be asked if you want to <S>ave the record, Start<O>ver or <Q>uit without saving. Select one of these options and press the appropriate letter on your keyboard. Pressing "S" here will cause the record to be saved in the database and allow it to be called up when adding a new Game Record. /%/ [3/1] REVIEW - Game ============= Select a game from the PickList and review the individual stats and the scorecard. ■ Registered users are given the option of printing this report. /%/ [3/2] REVIEW - Summary ================ Select this option to review a detailed summary of all your games showing 40+ stats, etc. The summary report is a good indicator of where you may need extra work/practice. ■ This will be one of the most interesting and informative reports you will see. After you record 15 or more games, you can really begin to see where your strong and weak points are in your game. ■ Registered users of GolfCap have the option of printing this informative report. /%/ [3/4] REVIEW - Golfer =============== A review of the information in your individual Golfer record. /%/ [3/5] REVIEW - Course =============== A review of the selected course's record. /%/ [3/7] REVIEW - Efficiency =================== Select Course and view the scoring efficiency report. This gives the golfer's scoring average for all games played on the selected course along with the average score for all Par 3, Par 4 and Par 5 holes played on that course. ■ This is another informative report produced by GolfCap. You can quickly tell where your strong and weak points are on selected courses. ■ Registered users of GolfCap have the option of printing this informative report. /%/ [4/1] EDIT - Game =========== A screen will appear showing all scores and other amounts as was originally saved when the game was first recorded. The course name and the golfers Course Handicap can not be changed. If these items need to be changed, you must delete that Record and enter it again. The first item available for change is the date the game was played. The blinking cursor will appear in this box. If the date is correct press <Enter> without making any change to go to the next available block. When changing the date, be sure to stick with your selected date format. If you do not wish to change the item where the cursor is located then press the <Enter> Key to go to the next item until you reach the item you wish to change. After you have made the change, continue pressing the <Enter> Key until you reach the end. You can then press <S> to save the changes or <Q> to quit without saving the changes. If you're using a Mouse then place the Mouse pointer on or near the letter (S,Q) of choice and click the LEFT Mouse button. ■ If you wish to change an amount or score in any of the boxes, you must change the ENTIRE amount/score by typing over ALL the numbers in that block. /%/ [4/3] EDIT - Golfer ============= If you need to change the name of a golfer, you must delete the Golfer Record then create a new one using the "Add Golfer" option. Any other changes can be made to the golfer's record using this option. Be sure to change your age after each birthday as GolfCap uses that information when determining the Handicap Index for Seniors, Junior golfers, etc. /%/ [4/5] EDIT - Course ============= Select the desired Course from the "PickList" and you will be able to change anything about a Course except its name. ■ If you need to change the name of a Course you must delete the Course Record and create a new one using the "Add Course" option. ■ Use this should the Rating and/or Slope values change or if one or more holes on the course are changed to different Par values. /%/ [4/7] INVENTORY ========= Selecting this option will allow you to maintain an inventory of all your Golf equipment and accessories. /%/ [5/1] UTILS - Port #1 =============== Select this option to use Parallel Port #1 for your Printer. This will be the Printer port that GolfCap uses when printing. ■ Most computers use Parallel Port #1 as the default printer port. Ports 2 and 3 are included as options for those users who have systems that are configured differently. /%/ [5/2] UTILS - Port #2 =============== Select this option to use Parallel Port #2 for your Printer. This will be the Printer port that GolfCap uses when printing. /%/ [5/3] UTILS - Port #3 =============== Select this option to use Parallel Port #3 for your Printer. This will be the Printer port that GolfCap uses when printing. /%/ [5/4] UTILS - MM-DD-YYYY ================== Select this option if you wish to use the standard (MM-DD-YYYY) date format. This is the default format used when GolfCap is started for the first time. ■ GolfCap does some sorting based on the Month (MM) and Day (DD) Once a default date format is selected, it should not be changed. /%/ [5/5] UTILS - DD-MM-YYYY ================== Select this option if you use Military or European style (DD-MM-YYYY) format. ■ GolfCap does some sorting based on the Day (DD) and Month (MM) Once a default date format is selected, it should not be changed. /%/ [5/7] UTILS - Delete Golfer ===================== Use this option to remove a Golfer Record from the database. Keep in mind that when you delete a Golfer Record that GolfCap will also remove ALL his/her Game Records from the database and they will not be recoverable! /%/ [5/8] UTILS - Delete Game =================== Use this option to remove a Game Record from the database. 1.. Select Game Record from "PickList" that is to be deleted by moving the HiLight Bar down/up the list. When the desired record is HiLighted, press <Enter>. Mouse users can move the Mouse pointer to the desired record and click the LEFT Mouse button to cause that record to be deleted. 2.. Watch the action in the "Progress Box" displayed on the left side of the screen. ■ Once a Game Record is deleted, it will be lost forever! All deletions are permanent and the record will not be recoverable! /%/ [5/9] UTILS - Delete Course ===================== You will be presented a "PickList" showing all the Courses in the database. Move the bar down/up the list until the correct Course's name is HiLighted and press <Enter>. If you wish to cancel this operation, you can press <Escape> while at the "PickList" and be returned to the Main Menu. ■ Once a Course Record is removed, it will be lost and gone forever! All deletions are permanent and the record will not be recoverable! /%/ [6/1] HANDICAP - Handicap Index ========================= A formula similar to that used by the U.S.G.A. and the R.C.G.A. is used for the computations and provides matching results. A golfer must have a minimum of five 18-hole Game Records in the database before a Handicap Index can be determined. Differentials Games to be used from ~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 5 Lowest round 6-7 2 Lowest rounds 8-9 3 Lowest rounds 10-11 4 Lowest rounds 12-13 5 Lowest rounds 14-15 6 Lowest rounds 16-17 7 Lowest rounds 18 8 Lowest rounds 19 9 Lowest rounds 20 10 Lowest rounds 21+ 10 Lowest rounds from last 20 rounds played This display screen provides the user with his/her current Handicap Index, OverAll Differential, scores of the games from which the Handicap Differentials were selected and a list of the scores from the last 5 - 20 18-hole games. The list of scores from the last 5 - 20 18-hole games are shown as played beginning at the left side and continuing across and if more than 10 scores are listed, beginning again at the left side of the second row of scores and continuing across from left to right. ■ The Handicap Index determined by GolfCap is not to be used as a golfer's "official" Handicap Index when entering Tournaments where players are flighted based on their Handicap. An "official" Handicap Index can only be obtained from the U.S.G.A. or the R.C.G.A. Handicap Index's coming from these organizations may take weeks to reach you. Using GolfCap, your Handicap Index can be seen after each Game Record is saved allowing a golfer to determine his/her current Handicap Index instantly. ■ In this and other GolfCap documents, U.S.G.A. stands for the United States Golf Association and R.C.G.A. stands for the Royal Canadian Golf Association. P.G.A. stands for the Professional Golfer's Association. ■ For more information about Handicaps, see the file HANDICAP.TXT included on the GolfCap diskette or archive (ZIP file). You may want to print it for a handy reference. Also, you may select the "Definitions" option in the PullDown Menu under the TopMenu option MISC for more information regarding Handicaps. /%/ [6/3] HANDICAP - Course Handicap ========================== A golfer's Course Handicap is commonly referred to as his/her "handicap." It's determined using the Golfer's current Handicap Index and the Slope and Rating of the Course being played. The course Pro or manager should be able to explain the method used to determine a Course Handicap using these three items when you're playing a course that you've never played before and don't have the course recorded in the GolfCap database. ■ A Course Handicap will be expressed as a whole number like 4, 9, 12, etc. while their Handicap Index is most often (but not always) shown with a decimal as in 3.6, 7.3, 16.4, etc. /%/ [6/5] HANDICAP - Quick Handicap ========================= Use this option to quickly figure a Course Handicap for any Golfer on any Course. You must know the Slope value of the Course and the Handicap Index of the Golfer. The golfer or Course does NOT have to be in the database. /%/ [7/1] PRINT - Inventory List ====================== Prints an inventory report and summary of all your Golf equipment /%/ [7/3] PRINT - Scorecard ================= Selecting this option will allow the user to first select a Course then print blank score cards for use when playing that course. ■ A Laser / Desk / Ink Jet printer is required for this operation. The printer must be capable of printing 5" X 8" card stock and also be capable of printing high ASCII characters. ■ Users should consult their printer manual for help with the proper font and/or DIP switch selections so the card can be printed properly. ■ If you use a Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 540 the correct font to use is PC-8 (Code Page 437). ■ The score card will have the following columns available: SCORE - Score for each hole FWAYS - If fairway hit off the Tee, place "X" here GREEN - If green hit in regulation, place "X" here PUTTS - Number of Putts for each hole SATTS - Sand Save Attempts for each hole SSAVE - If Par made from Sand trap, place "X" here /%/ [7/5] PRINT - Order Form ================== Use this option to fill out the form used to register GolfCap ■ This option will work with Dot Matrix, Laser or Desk/Ink Jet type printers. ■ This is the easy way to print your GolfCap registration. All the necessary information is gathered by GolfCap and the calculations are made "on the fly." ■ Credit Card users should place their order with the Public software Library (PsL). Addressing the ball: A golfer has "addressed" the ball when he/she has taken a stance AND has grounded the club, except that when in a hazard, the club may NOT be grounded. 2.. Bogey Golfer: A golfer with a Handicap Index ranging from 17.5 to 22.4 for Men and 21.5 to 26.4 for Women. See also #28 below. 3.. Bunker: A hazard consisting of a prepared area, often a hollow from which turf or soil has been removed and replaced with sand or the like. 4.. Casual Water: Any temporary accumulation of water which is visible before or after the golfer has taken a stance and is not in a water hazard. 5.. Club Limit: The maximum number of clubs allowed (including the Putter) in your bag during play is 14. 6.. Course Handicap: The number of Handicap Strokes a golfer receives at the course being played. A Course Handicap is determined by multiplying a golfer's Handicap Index by the Course Slope and then dividing the result by 113. If a decimal figure results, it is rounded to the nearest whole number (.5 is rounded upward). ■ GolfCap automatically determines a golfer's Course Handicap each time a Game Record is added to the database. 7.. Course Rating: The final evaluation of the playing difficulty of a course compared with similarly evaluated courses as related to the normal playing ability of a "scratch" golfer. A Course Rating is based on the score a scratch golfer should shoot from a certain set of Tees. The higher the Course Rating, the more difficult the course. 8.. Course Slope: The measure of the relative playing difficulty of a course and its relationship with abilities of both a "scratch" golfer and a "bogey" golfer. Course Slope defines a course's degree of difficulty for the average golfer. The higher the Course Slope, the more difficult the average golfer will find the course. Course Slope's range from a low of 100 (easy course) to 135 (very difficult course). Some courses may have a Slope value higher than 135. GolfCap allows Slope values from 100 to 170. ■ The Club Pro/Manager should be able to provide both the Slope and Rating of the course being played. At many clubs, this information is provided on the score card. 9.. Equitable Stroke Control: A form of mandatory stroke control, FOR HANDICAP PURPOSES ONLY, which limits the individual score on any hole in relation to a golfer's course handicap. The main purpose of ESC is to eliminate unrealistic scoring which is not related to a golfer's normal playing ability. Course Handicap Maximum Hole Score (U.S.G.A. Fairway Hit: A ball hit from the Tee and coming to rest in the fairway on Par 4 and Par 5 holes. A ball hit from the Tee on Par 3 holes that ends up in the fairway is considered a green missed and NOT a fairway hit. If any part of the ball is touching the area defined as the fairway, it is considered to be in the fairway and if hit as the 1st shot from the Tee, is considered a fairway hit in regulation. 11.. Green Hit: A ball ending up on the actual putting surface when hit as follows: Par 3 hole....: 1st shot Par 4 hole....: 1st or 2nd shot Par 5 hole....: 2nd or 3rd shot ■ A ball landing on the green and rolling/bouncing off the defined putting surface is NOT considered a green hit. ■ If after coming to a stop, any part of the ball is touching the defined putting surface and is hit from the shots listed above, it is considered as a green hit in regulation. 12.. Gross Score: This is the actual score shot on the course being played. See #23 below. 13.. Ground Under Repair: Any portion of the course so marked by an authorized representative of the club. It includes material that has been piled for removal, tire marks, construction areas, etc. Grass cuttings left on the course that have been abandoned and are not intended to be removed are NOT ground under repair unless marked as such. The margin of ground under repair extends vertically downward but not upward. 14.. Handicap Differential: The difference between a golfer's adjusted gross score and the Course Rating of the course on which the score was made, multiplied by 113, then divided by the Course Slope. ■ GolfCap automatically determines the Handicap Differential each time a Game Record is added to the database. 15.. Handicap Index: The number which represents the golfer's ability on a course of average difficulty. It is expressed, in most cases, as a whole number and a decimal. The decimal is NOT rounded. ■ A golfer does not play off the Handicap Index. Rather a Course Handicap is determined using the formula in item #6 above. ■ The maximum Handicap Index allowed is 36.4 (Men) and 40.4 (Women) ■ The Handicap Index is based on Handicap Differentials from 18-hole games only. Scores and other data from 9-hole games are used in the stats but are not used when GolfCap determines or updates your Handicap Index. ■ To review your Handicap Index, select HANDICAP from the TopMenu then select "Handicap Index". This display will provide you with your current Handicap Index, OverAll Differential, the scores from the games from which the Handicap Differentials were selected and a list of scores from your last 5 to 20 18-hole games. ■ If a golfer has 5 or more 18-holes games in the database, GolfCap automatically calculates, and updates, the golfer's Handicap Index after each new Game is entered and saved. 16.. Handicap Stroke Hole: A hole on which the golfer applies a handicap stroke to his/her gross score. These holes are usually indicated on the scorecard provided by the club. 17.. Hazard: Any bunker or water hazard. See #3 above and #32 below. 18.. Hole: The hole on the putting green is 4-1/4 inches (108mm) in diameter and at least 4 inches (100mm) deep. If a lining is used, it should be sunk at least 1 inch (25mm) below the putting green surface. The outside diameter of the liner should not exceed 4-1/4 inches (108mm). 19.. Holes Not Played: When a hole is not played, the score for that hole is Par, plus any handicap strokes the golfer is entitled to based on his/her full Course Handicap. This also applies to any hole not played by the Rules of Golf. 20.. Home Course Handicap: A golfer's Course Handicap at the course considered as the golfer's "home course" and from the tees most frequently used by the membership as established by that club. 21.. Incomplete Score: A golfer who starts, but fails to complete a hole, should use a score based on the following: Course Use this Handicap Hole Score --------------------------------- 0 .................... 1 over PAR 1 - 18 ............... 2 over PAR 19 - 32 .............. 3 over PAR 33 and above ......... 4 over PAR ■ There is no limit on the number of incomplete holes PROVIDED the incompletion is not intended to control the Handicap. A golfer should not discontinue play on a hole when there is the possibility the hole will be played in fewer strokes than the score allowed when ESC is in effect. ■ If a golfer is using ESC, the above scores may be adjusted by GolfCap based on the golfer's Course Handicap. 22.. Lost Ball: A ball is considered lost if: ■ It is not found within 5 minutes by its player after the search has begun. ■ The golfer has put another ball into play under the Rules of Golf, even though the original ball may not have been searched for. ■ The golfer has played any stroke with a provisional ball from the place where the original ball is likely to be or from a point nearer the hole than that place. 23.. Net Score: A golfer's score after it has been adjusted by his/her Course Handicap in effect when the game is played. ■ GolfCap automatically determines the Net Score each time a Game Record is added to the database. 24.. Par: The score a "scratch" golfer would be expected to make on any given hole, allowing two (2) strokes on the putting green. Provisional Ball: A ball played under the Rules of Golf which may be lost outside a water hazard or may be out of bounds. 26.. Putting Green: All ground of the hole being played which is specially prepared for putting or otherwise defined as such. A ball is considered to be "on the green" when any part of it is touching the putting green surface. For statistical purposes a ball landing on the green but rolling/bouncing off of the actual putting surface is to be considered a green missed. ■ The putting green has also been described as a place where golfers meet 18 times during a round to exchange excuses for bad putts and poor shots coming down the fairway. 27.. Rub of the green: This occurs when a ball in motion is deemed accidentally deflected or stopped by a scorer, observer, fellow competitor or a forecaddie. Neither wind nor water is taken into consideration in this situation. 28.. Scratch Golfer: A very proficient golfer. The average of the best half of this golfer's scores should equal the course Rating. This golfer would have a Handicap Index of 0 (zero). 29.. Stableford Points: A method where points are awarded in relation to Par at each hole as follows: Hole Score Points ------------------------------------ Two or more over Par ......... 0 One over Par ................. 1 Par .......................... 2 One under Par ................ 3 Two under Par ................ 4 Three under Par .............. 5 Four under Par ............... 6 ■ The winner in Stableford competition is the golfer who scores the most points. ■ GolfCap automatically determines the Stableford points each time a new Game Record is added to the database. 30.. Stakes/Markers: All out-of-bounds, hazards and ground-under- repair areas are identified by stakes/markers of the following colors: Water Hazards ........... Yellow stakes or lines Lateral Water Hazards ... Red stakes or lines Ground Under Repair ..... White lines Out Of Bounds ........... Large white stakes/posts where not already established by wall, fence, road/street or other permanent fixture. 31.. Stroke: The forward movement of the club made with the intention of striking the ball. If the golfer checks his/her downswing voluntarily before the clubhead reaches the ball, this is not considered a stroke. 32.. Water Hazard: Any sea, lake, pond, stream, ditch, surface water drainage ditch or other open water course (whether or not it contains water). 33..
