One of my (many) registered users asked me if I could come
up with a conversion utility program for his recipes, collected
with Edna's Cookbook. And here's the result.
The EDNA2MC.EXE program is FREE to all registered and un-
registered users (which are about to register), and come as-is. I
have tested it on many of the recipes in "Fred's 3000+ recipes
for Edna's Cookbook", and it seems to work fine. Just beware that
this program will ONLY work with MicroCook 1.xx. There will be a
new conversion utility with MicroCook 2.0.
Let's start on the top:
First you must export the recipes from Edna to ASCII files, and
here's how you do that.
With the recipe database loaded (in Edna) that you want to convert,
select Print from the Main menu.
Answer Yes to "Change these Parameters?"
Use Up and Down cursor key to move between the parameters, and
press Enter to change it. Press CTRL-ENTER when done.
When you are done, they all should read:
Output to: ASCII File
Pause Between Pages: No
Single Recipe per Page: No
Print Encrypted Recipes: No (Can be set to Yes if you have any)
Print Recipe Source: Yes
Print Source at: Bottom
Print Page Numbers: No
Print Cats/SubCats: Yes
Page Width (spaces): 080
Left Margin (spaces): 000
Right Margin (spaces): 002
Page Length (lines): 066
Top Margin (lines): 000
Bottom Margin (lines): 000
Beginning Page Number: 001
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT ALL THESE PARAMETERS ARE EXACTLY AS
ABOVE, OR EDNA2MC MIGHT NOT WORK CORRECTLY!
After you have entered all the parameters, and saved them, select
what you want to export. If the database you are exporting is not
too large, less than 1500 recipes, you can select "D. Print All
in File" Otherwise use "B. Print All in SubCategory", or "D.
Print All in Category". Just remember that you should not create
a MicroCook database over 2000 recipes (that number will increase
to over 300,000(!) in version 2.0, due out this spring/early
summer). When you are done exporting, exit Edna's Cookbook.

The EDNA2MC program is very easy to use. If one of the your
exported Edna ASCII files is called: SOUPS.TXT, from the DOS
prompt where EDNA2MC.EXE is, just type:
EDNA2MC SOUPS.TXT
If the EDNA2MC.EXE file is NOT in the same directory as the ASCII
files, you need to add the path to the text file too. But it's
probably easiest to just copy the EDNA2MC.EXE file to the
directory where all the ASCII files are.
The output MicroCook database will be called SOUPS.MCD, and will
be created in the same directory as where the SOUPS.TXT file is.
BEFORE you copy or move the MicroCook MCD files to any common
MicroCook recipes directory you might have, make sure that you
don't already have a database there with the same name!
You can now load MicroCook, and use the ALT-C (Change Database)
function to load the converted Edna database. Since no Index file
was created, one will be created the first time you load the new
database in MicroCook.
Since there are no Serving Size in Edna's Cookbook, this field is
left blank.
If you should have any questions or problems with EDNA2MC (or
MicroCook), please feel free to send me a note to one of the
above e-mail addresses.
History:
February 1995. Version 1.0 released.
March 1995. Version 1.1 released. Fixed bug in Ingredients conversions.
This bug cut some of the ingredients lines too short.
June 1995. Version 1.8. Changed database format for use with
MicroCook 1.8+ with 50 lines in Preparations editor.
