1.0 - Description:
------------------
PMWSETUP is a program which will allow you to modify the various PMODE/W
parameters which affect the way it executes. You may modify these parameters
within any program which uses PMODE/W. Or you may edit them within the PMODE/W
extender itself, where they will be passed on to any program compiled with
that modified version of PMODE/W. The syntax for PMWSETUP is as follows:
PMWSETUP <filename>
where <filename> is the path name of the executable you wish to modify or
"PMODEW.EXE" itself.
1.1 - PMODE/W Parameters:
-------------------------
For a more detailed explanation of these parameters, see the PMODE/W
documentation. Minimums and maximums will be enforced by the PMWSETUP program
for the settings, but you must still make sure that the values you set are
appropriate for your program. The parameters are as follows:
) Number of VCPI Page Tables:
This parameter specifies the maximum number of page tables allowed under a
VCPI server. For each page table used at run time, 4k of low memory is used
by PMODE/W.
) VCPI/XMS/raw Max Selectors:
This parameter specifies the number of selectors that PMODE/W will make
available when a DPMI host is not in place. PMODE/W needs only 8 bytes of
low memory for each selector, so you may set high values for this parameter.
) Real Mode Stack Length:
This parameter specifies the length of the real mode stack provided by
PMODE/W to real mode interrupt or IRQ calls. The size is in paragraphs.
PMODE/W allocates low memory for real mode stacks when it initializes, and
that memory can not be used for anything else.
) Protected Mode Stack Length:
This parameter specifies the length of the protected mode stack provided
by PMODE/W to real mode callbacks to protected mode or protected mode IRQ
handlers issued during real mode processing. The size is in paragraphs.
PMODE/W allocates low memory for protected mode stacks when it initializes,
and that memory can not be used for anything else.
) Real Mode Stack Nesting:
This parameter specifies the maximum number of nested real mode stacks
that PMODE/W will provide. PMODE/W will allocate this number of real mode
stacks when it initializes. So for example, 8 stacks at 40h paragraphs each
will allocate a total of 8k for real mode stacks.
) Protected Mode Stack Nesting:
This parameter specifies the maximum number of nested protected mode
stacks that PMODE/W will provide. PMODE/W will allocate this number of
protected mode stacks when it initializes. So for example, 8 stacks at 80h
paragraphs each will allocate a total of 16k for protected mode stacks.
) Number of Real Mode Callbacks:
This parameter specifies the maximum number of DPMI real mode callbacks
that PMODE/W will provide when a DPMI host is not in place. PMODE/W needs
25 bytes of low memory per callback, which is allocated during
initialization.
) VCPI/DPMI Detection Mode:
This parameter specifies the order of detection for VCPI and DPMI. This
allows for detection and use of VCPI for speed under a system that supports
both DPMI and VCPI.
) Maximum Extended Memory to Allocate:
This parameter specifies the maximum amount of extended memory for PMODE/W
to allocate from the system. The size is in bytes. Specifying a lower value
for this parameter than there is extended memory in the system will force
PMODE/W to leave some extended memory free for use by other extenders and
programs that use XMS and EMS. Your program will not necessarily have this
much extended memory available to it due to other PMODE/W and Watcom C/C++
system requirements for extended memory.
) Low Memory to Reserve:
This parameter specifies the minimum amount of low memory for PMODE/W to
reserve for the program. PMODE/W will try to preserve this low memory by
loading 32 bit code and data into extended memory if it can, but the memory
is not guaranteed to be available. Setting this parameter to a very high
value ensures PMODE/W will leave as much low memory free as possible.
) Maximum Physical Address Mapping Page Tables:
This parameter specifies the maximum number of page tables to be made
available by PMODE/W under VCPI for physical address mapping. PMODE/W needs
4k of extended memory for each page table for address mapping.
) Display Copyright Message At Startup:
This parameter is checked by PMODE/W at startup in order to decide whether
or not the copyright message is displayed during initialization.
1.2 - Editing:
--------------
While in PMWSETUP, the arrow keys move the selection bar, SPACE toggles
hex/decimal display, and ENTER allows you to enter a new value for the
currently selected parameter. PMWSETUP will not allow you to exceed the
minimum or maximum values for the parameters, but common sense must also be
used when assigning very low or high settings. When you are done modifying the
parameters, you may save your changes. If you decide not to make any changes,
you may abort, and any parameters you have modified will not be written to the
file you are editing.

2.0 - Description:
------------------
PMWBIND is a program which binds and unbinds stub programs to and from
protected mode LE executable files (the file format used by DOS/4GW, and
PMODE/W). This allows you to replace older versions of PMODE/W within an
executable file with newer ones. It also allows you to turn a DOS/4GW,
DOS/4GW PRO, or DOS/4G PRO program into a PMODE/W program very easily just by
replacing the stub. This practice in not really suggested though since you do
not know if the program in question uses any DOS/4G specific functions which
will not work with PMODE/W. But in general, many programs are completely
portable from DOS/4GW to PMODE/W with little or no tweaking of the PMODE/W
parameters. PMWBIND will not allow you to bind or unbind a compressed
protected mode PMODE/W executable due to the fact that it is not an ordinary
LE executable and it would really serve no point. The syntax for PMWBIND is
as follows:
PMWBIND <command> [options] <filename>
where <command> is the operation you want to perform (bind, unbind, or
replace), [options] are various options, and <filename> is the path name of
the program you wish to modify.
2.1 - Commands:
---------------
) /B - Bind PMODE/W (or specified stub) to an unbound LE executable file.
) /U - Unbind the stub from a DOS/4GW, DOS/4GW PRO, DOS/4G PRO or PMODE/W
executable file.
) /R - Replace the stub of a DOS/4GW, DOS/4GW PRO, DOS/4G PRO or PMODE/W
executable file.
2.2 - Switches:
---------------
) /D<filename> - Use <filename> for destination of bound or unbound executable
instead of default.
) /N - Suppress output of executable file (used only with /U
command).
) /O - Overwrite destination files if they exist.
) /S<filename> - Specify a stub to use instead of searching for "PMODEW.EXE".
If you do not specify this switch, the current directory will
be checked for "PMODEW.EXE", then the Watcom "\BINB"
directory, then the "\BIN" directory, the "\BINW" directory,
and finally the Watcom main directory itself.
) /W<filename> - Write the unbound stub to <filename> instead of discarding.

3.0 - Description:
------------------
PMWLITE is a program which compresses protected mode LE executables for use
with PMODE/W. It does basically what real mode EXE compression programs do
for real mode programs. PMWLITE will accept DOS/4GW, DOS/4GW PRO, DOS/4G PRO,
and uncompressed PMODE/W programs and compress them for use with the current
version of PMODE/W. If you are compressing a program with a different version
of PMODE/W in it, the current version will be put in. When the compressed
protected mode program is run, PMODE/W will decompress it as it is loading in
into memory. The syntax for PMWLITE is as follows:
PMWLITE [options] <filename>
where [options] are various options, and <filename> is the path name of the
program you wish to compress.
NOTE: PMODE/W v1.20 or later is required for your compressed program to run.
Any older version of PMODE/W will simply exit with the message "Error
Loading LE!".
3.1 - Switches:
---------------
) /Cx - Compression level to use, where x is 4 for Max, 3 for Extra,
2 for Normal, 1 for Faster, and 0 for Fastest compression.
) /D<filename> - Use <filename> for destination of compressed executable
instead of default (which is the input filename).
) /S<filename> - Specify a stub to use instead of searching for "PMODEW.EXE".
If you do not specify this switch, the current directory will
be checked for "PMODEW.EXE", then the Watcom "\BINB"
directory, then the "\BIN" directory, the "\BINW" directory,
and finally the Watcom main directory itself.

4.0 - Description:
------------------
PMWVER is a very simple utility to print out the version of PMODE/W which
a program is using. It does not have any fancy options or switches. It just
runs and prints the version on the screen. The syntax is as follows:
PMWVER <filename>
where <filename> is the path name of the PMODE/W program ou wish to check. It
can also be run on PMODEW.EXE itself.
