  1. TIRAMISU - SOPHISTICATED DATA RECOVERY

  5. INTRODUCTION
  6.  
  7. TIRAMISU is a software for reconstructing data from a crashed hard drive.
  8. It helps when the drive is
  9.  
  10.     - hit by a virus
  11.     - scratched by a head crash
  12.     - formatted
  13.     - 'fdisk'ed
  14.     - zapped by a power failure
  15.     - damaged by applications
  16.  
  17. TIRAMISU scans the drive even when there are physical damages. The found
  18. data are analyzed and reconstructed. TIRAMISU can handle drives without
  19. readable boot sector, readable Fat or readable directories. It can
  20. handle drives that are not recognized by DOS anymore.
  21.  
  22. TIRAMISU automatically creates a VIRTUAL DRIVE in memory. This virtual drive
  23. looks like a usual file manager. You can see the lost directories and files
  24. of your crashed drive. Now files and directories can be viewed and copied
  25. to a safe medium.
  26.  
  27. The extensive use of our sophisticated pattern recognition technology
  28. enables TIRAMISU to put the right pieces of data together again. Even
  29. disks with very few administrative informations left can reach a high
  30. recovery quality.
  31. TIRAMISU recovers much more data than any other 'disk doctor'.
  32.  
  33. TIRAMISU is NON DESTRUCTIVE and READ ONLY. It does not put any data onto
  34. your crashed drive. Recovered data are restored to another destination
  35. (disk, diskette, network, interlink).

  37. TIRAMISU works on DOS and Windows platforms. Versions for NOVELL and HPFS
  38. are under development.

  41. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  42.  
  43. - 286 processor and up
  44. - 4 MB RAM and up
  45.  
  46. Depending on the size of the drive to be recovered we recommend a 386 with
  47. 4 MB RAM. Installing 3 MB of EMS (Version 4) is recommended.

  50. GETTING STARTED
  51.  
  52. 1) Boot diskette
  53.  
  54. Create a boot diskette with a CONFIG.SYS similar to this:
  55.  
  56.         files=25
  57.         device=himem.sys
  58.         device=emm386.exe
  59.  
  60. Make sure you have specified the correct drive parameters in BIOS setup.
  61. Boot the computer and start the program TIRAMISU.EXE.
  62.

  64. 2) Specify swap area
  65.  
  66. By default TIRAMISU uses EMS as swap area. If for some reason there is
  67. no or not enough EMS you can specify a swap area on disk.
  68. Select OPTION -> DATA RECOVERY, tag 'DISK ALLOWED', specify path.
  69. CAUTION: Do not swap to the drive you intend to recover.

  72. 3) Hit TIRAMISU! for the drive you want to recover.

  74. TIRAMISU starts processing. Depending on your system's speed and the size
  75. of your drive this can take 5 minutes or even up to 1 hour.

  78. 4) Copy some or all files to a safe medium using F7
  79.  
  80. Now you see the virtual drive and you can view and copy (registered
  81. version only) the files to any DOS-available destination.

  83. THAT'S IT! ISN'T IT EASY?

  86. RESTRICTIONS
  87.  
  88. TIRAMISU handles only drives with 16-Bit Fats, which applies to most
  89. systems. Only old (10 MB) drives have another Fat (12-Bit).
  90.  
  91. If you have more than one partition, you can only recover the first one.
  92. (This problem will be solved with a later version). However, there is
  93. a workaround: physically copy the partition you want to recover to
  94. another drive. And feel free to contact us if you need assistance.

  96. Since TIRAMISU is very memory hungry, your PC might run
  97. out of memory. If you face this problem, install a memory manager with as
  98. much RAM and EMS as possible.
  99. Watch the available memory displayed at the bottom line. The value displayed
  100. at the far right shows the free RAM. The E:XXX shows the free EMS and the
  101. F:XXX shows the fragmentation.
  102. The RAM should not go below 50000.

  105. TROUBLE SHOOTING
  106.  
  107. If you get only scrambled results this could be due to the TIRAMISU
  108. drive structure recognition routine. Try this:
  109. Select OPTION -> DATA RECOVERY, tag 'AUTOMATIC IDENTIFICATION' off.
  110. Press TIRAMISU!. After a while you get a window that proposes a certain
  111. drive structure. If you are not satisfied with what you see you can
  112. press 'Search Again'. TIRAMISU tries to retrieve another structure.
  113. Finally press 'Ok'.
  114.  
  115. You should not use any other 'disk doctor' before running TIRAMISU. If you
  116. did so, please 'undo'.
  117. if you cannot 'undo' you can tell TIRAMISU to ignore the file entries
  118. the 'disk doctor' created (something like FILE0000.CHK...).
  119. Select OPTION -> DATA RECOVERY, modify the field 'Exclude Main
  120. Directory Entries'.

  128. REGISTRATION
  129.  
  130. TIRAMISU IS DISTRIBUTED AS SHAREWARE. FEEL FREE TO COPY, DISTRIBUTE OR
  131. UPLOAD IT TO ANY MEDIUM. The unregistered version has all functions
  132. for recovering you crashed hard drive. But only the registered version
  133. of TIRAMISU allows you to COPY files from your recovered drive.

  135. The registration fee is DM 145. (Equal to US $99)

  137. The registration allows you to COPY recovered files from a SPECIFIED SET
  138. OF ONE OR TWO DRIVES.

  140. The procedure is this:

  142.     - Run TIRAMISU and check if it can restore your data (VIEW your files)
  143.  
  144.     - Select HELP -> REGISTRATION. You see an 8-digit code. This is the
  145.       ID of your current drive configuration.

  147.     - Submit this code to the TIRAMISU registration service:

  160.     - Send DM 145 (or US $99) or credit card information (VISA or DINERS).

  162.     - After receiving the registration key, enter it in the registration
  163.       screen. Insert a diskette in drive A:. This diskette will be your
  164.       license diskette for future use.

  166.     - Now you can use COPY to save your data.
  167.  
  168. IMPORTANT: The registration allows you to recover data only from your
  169. computer with its configuration.
  170. It is not valid for other drives than specified. This is a copy protection.
