CTEST - The Disk Cache Evaluator
Version 1.1
REQUIREMENTS:
IBM PC or compatible, hard disk with at least 6mB free space
IN BRIEF:
This software is used to test the relative transfer rates of disk caches on a
PC. It may be used to compare the effectiveness of different cache systems on
the same PC, or to fine tune one disk cache for a hardware platform.
In order to produce the best possible reports CTEST needs to know what command
to issue to the disk cache software to get a status report. If you are running
Microsoft SMARTDRIVE CTEST will default the required parameters. If you are
using Norton NCACHE from a directory specified before the directory where
smartdrv.exe resides CTEST will default the correct parameters.
There are four tests which are executed: Sequential write, sequential read,
random write and random read. The time taken for each test (in seconds) is
recorded and displayed as well as a total time for all the tests. These
timings will vary from run-to-run due to disk fragmentation, and the random
nature of the random read/write operations. However, they are sufficiently
consistent to allow comparison of different cache systems and settings.
EXAMPLE:
Let's assume you have a 486 DX PC running Microsoft smartdrive. What size
cache is going to be best for YOUR hardware? Is it 1mB, 2mB or 3mB or perhaps
even larger? You can find out with CTEST. Simply set smartdrive to the lowest
settings. Reboot the computer, and then run CTEST. Then change the smartdrive
settings, reboot the computer and run CTEST again.
Since CTEST records the results of ALL tests along with the dick cache status
in the file CTEST.DAT you can review the test results at anytime.
SHAREWARE:
This software is supplied as fully-functional shareware. This means you may
try it before you buy it. It is not *free* software. If you want to use this
software you must purchase it. Please see the file ORDER.DOC for details of
purchasing this software.
