│#1│ Introduction
└──┘
Rapid Rhino is a cute platform game, fun for any age.
The goal is to let our little blue hero reach the waterfall
at the end of each level, to let him drink.
Walk, Run, Jump, Shoot .. Rapid Rhino will do anything
to reach the waterfalls, he just has to drink the water.
There are five levels and a cool story to play with.
This game is meant to provide fun at low cost. This means no $100, no
200Mb of harddisk space, no 7 CD-ROMs, no 8Mb required and no
operating system needed which came out in 1995..
The game supports SoundBlaster because most people have one, and
Gravis Ultrasound because of it's superiour capabilities.
If you have an Ultrasound, you'll get more sounds in stereo,
and the game uses less memory.
We hope you'll enjoy this game!!!

│#2│ Shareware Notes
└──┘
This version of Rapid Rhino is shareware. The idea is to let you
testplay a small part of the game, so you can see if you like it,
if it works with your system etc.
You may spread this version of Rapid Rhino under these two
conditions: 1) No modifications may be made.
2) All 3 files (RAPIDS.EXE, RAPIDS.DOC, RAPIDS.DAT)
must be included.
Level 1 from the original game has been used to create this small
shareware version. In the full version, level 1 is just to 'warm up'
for the much harder levels which follow.
Those levels are much more difficult and take more time to complete..
So if you can play level 1 easily, it's time to order
the next levels!
To order Rapid Rhino, you can e-mail to rhino@euroweb.com
or take a look at the Rapid Rhino webpages at
http://www.euroweb.com/rhino
See the screenshots, read the texts, read more about the
developers, look at the children testplayers team..
All this at the Rapid Rhino webpages!
We also offer a unique service:
You can get any picture you want as a background
during the game! This can be a picture of the
person you're giving Rapid Rhino for his/her birthday,
a picture of your favourite baseball player
or maybe a picture of your kid!
Of course you can still get the original background
animation when you register with this option.
See our webpages for more information!

│#3│ The Title Screen
└──┘
On the title screen, you can choose 3 items:
START GAME
OPTIONS
QUIT
To select an option, use the cursors and the space key.
Select 'START GAME' if you want to play. If you want to change
something before starting, choose 'OPTIONS'
The 'QUIT' item will bring you back to your operating system.
In the 'OPTIONS' screen you can set the following items:
SOUND ON / OFF
CONTROL KEYS / JOYSTICK
SETUP JOYSTICK
STORY LANGUAGE ENGLISH / NEDERLANDS
EXIT OPTIONS
You can select an option here the same way you did at the
title screen. The options 'SOUND,' 'CONTROL' and 'STORY LANGUAGE'
will change it's value when selected.
The option 'SETUP JOYSTICK' will start a sequence to
adjust the game to your joystick. The adjustment will
be saved to disk so you will only have to do this once.
The option 'EXIT OPTIONS' will bring you back to the
title screen.
Note: The options are saved only when you exit the game
in the usual way (so resetting/crashing etc. will
not save the options).

│#4│ Getting Sound
└──┘
Rapid Rhino supports the Gravis Ultrasound and the SoundBlaster
for sound.
The GUS:
Once this card is detected, the game loads all the
usual (SB) samples and the extra (GUS) samples to
the cards memory.
The GUS playback is done by the GUS only (no DMA
needed), so everything should work fine.
The SoundBlaster:
When the SoundBlaster is detected, the game asks for
the IRQ. I assume all SB owners know what this is all
about, but in case you're not sure, it's usually 7.
The game uses the SB's capability to preform DMA playback
of samples (DMA channel 1). This means a lot of things
can go wrong. If so, you can always fool the problem with
the /nosound parameter.
The SoundBlaster has only got one sound playback channel.
The game supports two methods to deal with this problem.
The standard methode is when a new sound is to be played,
the 'old' sound simply stops.
This methode might cause a short slowdown of the game, since
the SoundBlaster (DSP) and the DMA have to be reprogrammed
to 'take over' the soundchannel.
The second methode is to simply ignore the new sound when
an old sound is still playing. To get this, use the
'/sbfinishsample' parameter. This methode will not cause
short slowdowns.
The following parameters can be used to change sound
output (usage: "RAPID [parameter] <Enter>"):
/nosound | Skips all sound detection
/nogus | Skips detection of GUS because it
| might hang on a network card
/sbfinishsample | See above
Note: We tested Rapid Rhino under DOS, Windows 3.11 and Windows '95.
It worked fine under all platforms, but Windows 3.11 created
'noise' soundeffects on the SoundBlaster.

│#5│ During the game...
└──┘
During the game you can control the hero with the
joystick (when selected in the options menu) or
with the keyboard. The keys for keyboard control
are:
CURSORS to move left/right
CURSOR UP to jump
SPACE to shoot
The following keys have the following function:
ESC to quit the game
PAUSE to pause the game
F1 to turn background sound on/off (GUS only)

│#6│ Troubleshooting, Problems and Answers
└──┘
P: .. the game hangs when starting ..
A: Try to run the game with the /nosound parameter,
like this: RAPID /nosound <Enter>
If you have a SoundBlaster, try RAPID /nogus.
The problem might be caused by a network card.
P: .. the game still hangs when starting ..
A: Try changing the system settings (BIOS/CONFIG.SYS etc.).
P: .. the joystick doesn't work ..
A: Check the connection and don't forget to setup the
joystick in the options menu. Changing the computers
speed (pressing the 'Turbo' button) will very likely
change the joystick readings too.
P: .. the background animation doesn't work ..
A: To animate the background enough memory must be free.
If this is not the case, only one 'frame' of the
background will be loaded .. The animation doesn't
work, but at least the game still does!
P: .. The background sound (wind, jungle) doesn't work ..
A: Those sounds are GUS only because the GUS has hardware
mixing and it can store samples in it's own memory
(leaving the conventional memory for animation etc.).
P: .. the game crashes, bugs, acts weird, the controls don't
work and the sound doesn't sound as it should ..
A: Exit Windows and re-run the game from DOS. :-)
This is not a Windows game, but tests showed it
can work just fine under windows..
P: .. the game runs extreemly slow..
.. even the title screen works slowly ..
A: This is probably because the joystick is selected while
there is no joystick in the joystick port.
There are 3 possibilities to solve this problem:
1) Connect the joystick..
2) Go to the options screen and select keyboard..
3) Exit the game and delete RAPID.CFG
Hope to see you at http://www.euroweb.com/rhino
ENJOY!
