9. About the ASP
1. Introduction
Shareware is a method of software distribution that
gives the user a chance to try the software before
buying it. If you try a Shareware program and
continue to use it, you are expected to register.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and
commercial software and the copyright holder retains
all rights, with the exception that copying and
distributing the program for evaluation purposes is
encouraged, subject to certain conditions.
2. What's new in version 3.1
The major addition for version 3.1 is the tutorial.
I hope you enjoy it. Any comments would be
appreciated.
A graphical display has been added for hands, see
the View Menu. Rubber bridge scoring has been added.
A gambling feature has been added to accumulate
points over rubbers.
The process of upgrading both the bidding and
playing knowledge bases and fixing bugs continues.
For more details see vendor.doc.
3. License Agreement and Warranty
Please read the terms below. If you do not agree to
them you are requested to stop using the program and
to remove the program from your computer.
All users of Bridge Assistant 3.1 must accept the
following disclaimer of warranty and conditions of
usage:
Bridge Assistant 3.1 is supplied as is. The
author does not warrant that the software is
error-free and assumes no liability for
damages, direct or consequential, which may
result from the use of Bridge Assistant 3.1.
The author expressly requests that you do not
make changes or modifications to the software.
Also you may not dis-assemble or reverse
engineer the software in any way.
Users evaluating Bridge Assistant 3.1 do so under
the following conditions:
The author grants you the right to evaluate
Bridge Assistant 3.1 for a period of 30 days
and requests that if you continue using the
program after this period that you then
register the product.
Commercial users of Bridge Assistant 3.1 must
register and pay for their copies of Bridge
Assistant 3.1 within 30 days of first use or
their license is withdrawn.
4. Installation
The installation of Bridge Assistant involves
extracting the zip-file BRIDGE.ZIP into a sub-
directory on your hard disk. Unarchiving the zip-
file will set up all the files required to run
Bridge Assistant.
If you do not understand the paragraph above then
you should carefully follow the instruction below
and refer where necessary to your DOS manual.
1. Go to the DOS prompt.
You should see a c:\> or something similar on
your screen.
2. Make a sub-directory for Bridge Assistant on
your hard disk.
To do this type:
md \bridge
3. Change to the sub-directory that you have just
created.
To do this type:
cd \bridge
4. Now extract the archive. Include the drive
letter in the command.
To do this type:
pkunzip a:bridge.zip
5. Getting Started
Bridge Assistant requires Windows so before
attempting to run it you should start windows. There
are then several ways to run a program for which you
should refer to the Windows User Guide.
One way to do it is to use Program Manager. Select
Run from the File Menu. When the dialog box appears
type BRIDGE, you may have to type C:\BRIDGE\BRIDGE
if you haven't added the sub-directory where you
placed the program to your PATH statement.
It is recommended that you add Bridge Assistant to a
Program Manager group. A good place to put it would
be in the Games group where you can find Solitaire
and Minesweeper.
Once the program runs you should see the main
program window and a variety of buttons and menus.
You are now ready to play the game. If you can work
out what everything is fine. Otherwise it is time to
use the manual. See the file manual.wri or use the
help system. To access this press the F1 key.
6. Support
Hopefully your use of Bridge Assistant
will be easy and trouble-free. However,
problems may arise and if so do not
hesitate to contact the author - see the
contact details.
Also if you spot any bugs or have any
ideas for improvements these would be
welcome.
This support is one of the benefits of
registration. It is provided via Mail or
eMail and is lifetime (of the program not
the author!) support.

8. Distribution
Feel free to share Bridge Assistant with
your friends, but please do not distribute
the program in an incomplete or modified
form, or as part of another system, or for
a fee.
Anyone distributing Bridge Assistant 3.1
for any kind of remuneration must first
contact the author for permission. This
authorisation will be automatically
granted to distributors recognised by the
(ASP) as adhering to its guidelines for
Shareware distributors, and such
distributors may begin offering Bridge
Assistant 3.1 immediately. See VENDOR.DOC
for more details.
9. About the ASP
The Association of Shareware Professionals (ASP) was
formed in 1987 by a group of Shareware authors. The
intention was to inform users about Shareware,
encourage professionalism among authors and
discourage unethical practices (crippling programs,
excessive reminder screens, failure to respond to
registration) that were threatening the development
of the Shareware industry.
The author of Bridge Assistant 3.1 is a member of
the ASP and the following is the Ombudsman
statement:
"This program is produced by a member of the
Association of Shareware Professionals (ASP). ASP
wants to make sure that the Shareware principle
works for you. If you are unable to resolve a
Shareware-related problem with an ASP member by
contacting the member directly, ASP may be able
to help. The ASP Ombudsman can help you resolve a
dispute or problem with an ASP member, but does not
provide technical support for members' products.
Please write to the ASP Ombudsman at 545 Grover
Road, Muskegon, MI 49442 or send a CompuServe
message via CompuServe Mail to ASP Ombudsman
70007,3536."
