After trying to use the ROL2CMF.EXE utility, I thought that others might not be having an easy time with it. I have included a few files to assist you with this task of converting .ROL (Adlib music files) into .CMF (Sound Blaster music files).
I have included the following files(which you should have):
ROL2CMF.EXE the main utility
ROL-CMF.BAT the conversion batch file if you use drive C:
STANDARD.BNK the instrument file
DIEYOUNG.ZIP a zipped .ROL file for you to convert
To use the ROL-CMF.BAT file which I have written you must:
1) Copy the STANDARD.BNK file into your \SB\ directory
(this should be your Sound Blaster Directory)
This directory must be on the same drive you intend to use the conversion program on. Your \SB\ directory must be permanent, you can't keep moving it around. If you have a hard drive the \SB\ directory should be on it.
If you already have a STANDARD.BNK file in that directory
Then you shouldn't need this file. However, The one I have Included may be larger and contain more instruments than the one you have, so don't throw either one away.
2) Copy the following files into a directory which is on the same drive as your \SB\ directory. (For example C:\CMF\):
2-1) ROL2CMF.EXE
2-2) ROL-CMF.BAT
2-3) ????????.ROL the file with the extension .ROL
(DIEYOUNG.ROL for example)
***NOTE***
This Batch file (ROL-CMF.BAT) will erase the .ROL files as they are converted. Be sure to make a backup copy of your .ROL files
just in case something goes wrong. I have been using this file and have had no problems at all. Remember I gave you this file
to help you and I am in no way liable for anything that goes wrong. The reason for deleting the .ROL file is because after the conversion you don't need it anymore. Still, I will repeat myself, BE SURE TO MAKE A BACKUP OF ALL THE FILES. (You should do this anyway, there is always a chance that something will go wrong)
3) To use the Batch file type: ROL-CMF FILENAME
-> FILENAME is the name of the .ROL file. For example DIEYOUNG
For example to convert DIEYOUNG.ROL to DIEYOUNG.CMF type:
ROL-CMF DIEYOUNG
4) Watch as your .ROL file is converted to .CMF format.
->In case of error, Try to figure it out and don't get frusterated.
One error which I have found are that the Instrument file STANDARD.BNK didn't have the instrument which the file needs to be
converted. The STANDARD.BNK file which I have supposedly has 801 different instruments and I have never had a problem while using it. If you get an Error during the instrument sorting and reading, try using the STANDARD.BNK file which I have included.
If that doesn't work...Well...I guess your on your own. I admit I don't know everything about this utility. I tried to make this file as easy to use as I could.
I hope this file works as well for you as it does for me.
ENJOY! and Good Luck!
