Installing the Microsoft Audio Compression Manager 2.00
--------------------------------------------------------
These instructions shall help you in installing the Microsoft Audio
Compression Manager 2.00 (Sound Mapper). I found that the README.1ST
file didn't give a complete installation instruction, so I wrote this
to guide you through the installation and setup process. It's strictly
based on my own findings, and I don't have any relationship to
Microsoft except being a customer. I can't be held responsible for any
damage or data loss caused by this driver. Follow these instructions at
your own risk. Don't send me any questions about this driver, direct them
to Rick Segal at Microsoft. Look at the README.1ST for his E-mail
addresses. Also, please consult the supplied .hlp-files very carefully.
To install the Sound Mapper, do the following:
1) Unpack this archive in an empty directory or a blank diskette.
2) Start the Control Panel and click on the driver's icon.
3) If you have a previous version of the Audio Compression Manager
driver installed, remove it and restart Windows first.
Then repeat step 2).
3) Select Unlisted or updated driver...
4) Use the Browse button to get to the drive/directory where you
unpacked this archive.
5) Select one of the shown drivers after another and press OK.
Note: Don't restart Windows until you installed all the drivers.
The MS ACM Filter won't install, this is correct.
6) After you installed all drivers you can restart Windows.
7) Copy all the .hlp files into your \WINDOWS\SYSTEM
8) Start Windows and go into the control panel. You will see a
new icon for the Sound Mapper.
9) Doubleclick it and select your preferred Input and Output devices.
(If you have a PAS-16 or PAStudio16 and set them up to play two
wave files, you'll usually see two devices here:
Media Vision Pro Audio/CDPC Wave/MIDI/Aux and
Snd Blaster Compatible Wave Audio
I found it to work best with the Media Vision Pro Audio/CDPC driver
as both the Input and Output device.)
That's it, the Sound Mapper driver should now be successfully installed.
It will bring you a lot of benefits: If for example the output
capabilities of your sound card are limited to 22.050 KHz, you're now,
with the Sound Mapper driver, able to play back a 44.1 KHz, 16 Bit, Stereo
wave file on such a card. That's especially great when you're playing back
two wave files at the same time. On a PAS-16, you're now able to play
back two 44.1 KHz, 16 Bit, Stereo wave files simultaneously by just
doubleclicking them in the File Manager or an NDW drive window.
