*** Z-MAX VERSION 1996.9.29.SHW ***
"Z-Max" is similar to "Galaxian" but has too many
new weapons and other goodies to be called a clone! You
may shoot diagonally, as well as straight up, but so can
your enemies. Weapons available include a shield, your
"normal shot," Fireballs, Wisps, and the mighty Comet-
Missile! The shareware version will only play two levels
(and won't let you fight one of the kinds of enemies) but
for less than $10.00 you can get the full version.
INSTALLATION:
Copy all files from this disk or .zip file into
their own directory on your hard drive. "Z-Max" does
NOT do anything to your Windows directory unless set to
use it as its working directory. You may uninstall it
like a DOS program by simply deleting all its files and
its directory.
CONTROLS:
PRESS [ESC] TO END THE GAME OR EXIT THE PROGRAM.
PRESS [F1] (FROM TITLE SCREEN) TO VIEW THE CONTROLS.
PRESS [ENTER] (FROM TITLE SCREEN) FOR THE OPTIONS SCREEN.
[LEFT] & [RIGHT] ARROW KEYS TO MOVE.
[UP] ARROW KEY = COMET-MISSILE.
[1][2][3] = NORMAL SHOT.
[Q][W][E] = FIREBALL.
[A][S][D] = WISP.
[SPACE] = SHIELD.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
-Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher
-One megabyte of free disk space
-486-50 or faster CPU (it will "crawl" on a 486-33)
-Sound Card optional
-Sound recommended turned OFF if using a PC-Speaker driver
CHANGES FROM PREVIOUS RELEASES:
96.9.28
-REFRESH DELAY NOW BASED ON THE CLOCK. If you are installing this
over a previous version of Z-Max, you MUST get rid of the file
"z-max.cfg" before installing.
-PENTIUM FRIENDLY!!! "Z-Max" is now optimized for Pentium based
machines. The keys will no longer "bounce" on Pentiums.
-Fireballs from Heaters are now distinguishable from those fired
by Z-Max.
-The shield duration at the beginning of a new life is three times
that of a normal shield charge.
-Scores above 32000 should now display correctly.
-Diagonal vector of enemy shots is now same as diagonal shots of
Z-Max. This makes the enemies less aggressive because if they
shoot at you diagonally, you can shoot back with a reasonable
chance of hitting them.
-Explosion of Z-Max is bigger.
-Level counter to the left of the score.
-Title bar now shows the version number.
* Special thanks to Stephan Berberian for the use of "BIG WORM"
to test the "Pentium-friendlyness."
96.7.27
-No "left over" enemies from previous game.
-Collision detection has been fixed! A shot may occasionally hit
slightly left of the target, but this is generally in your favor.
-Enemy AI for when to shoot diagonally has been improved.
-"Straight down" enemy shots are now truely straight down and do
not any longer inherit the velocity vectors of the enemy cluster.
-You may no longer "hide" off the right-edge of the screen (sorry
cheaters *evil-grin*)
-It is now illegal to move and shoot a comet-missile simultaneously.
-Comet-missiles are now slightly slower than "normal shots."
-Killing a stalker causes a denser screen-wide "dust-explosion."
-The shield now protects you from a direct collision with an enemy.
-The occasional "General Protection Faults" have been (almost)
erraticated. If a GPF does occur, it may leave a large memory-
leak (this means less memory available for you non-techies). If
a GPF occurs several times in a row, cold-start the computer and
it should behave again.
