  3.       A Brief Guide on HOW to "register" for membership in FidoNET
  4.       
  5. 1. Download and study  the  file "POLICY4.ARC" available on almost any
  6.    FidoNET  Coordinator's  BBS.   "POLICY4"  is  the  guiding  "rules"
  7.    document for FidoNET at this time.
  8.         
  9. 2. Also download a copy of  the  CURRENT  WEEK's  "NODELIST.Ann" file.
  10.    (Note:  the "nn" in the  filename  extension ".Ann" is the last two
  11.    digits of the Julian "day of the  year"  on  which the NODELIST was
  12.    published, and the ".A" indicates that it is  an ARCHIVE compressed
  13.    using the standard SEA "ARC" format.

  15. 3. After  reading  "POLICY4", search through the NODELIST to find  the
  16.    "HOST"  system  CLOSEST  to your system's location, within the same
  17.    "AREA  CODE".    This  "HOST" system will either BE the appropriate
  18.    "Network Coordinator"  (NC)  or  know how to get in touch with one.
  19.    Failing that, the  closest  "REGION"  system will be able to direct
  20.    you to the "NC" serving your vicinity.
  21.         
  22. 4. Once you have determined WHO the "Network Coordinator" serving your
  23.    vicinity is, you must apply  for  registration  in FidoNET, ...  BY
  24.    SENDING THE COORDINATOR A NETMAIL MESSAGE!  This is VERY important:
  25.    ALL  REGISTRATION  REQUESTS  *MUST* BE IN THE  FORM  OF  A  NETMAIL
  26.    MESSAGE.    This procedure acts as PROOF that  you  have  correctly
  27.    installed your software and KNOW HOW to send a netmail message with
  28.    it!
  29.         
  30.    To be considered, a "registration request" message MUST contain ALL
  31.    of the following information:
  32.         
  33.         A. Your  full,  legal  name  as  "SYSOP"  of  the  site  to be
  34.            registered.  (not a handle)
  35.                    
  36.         B. Your VOICE phone  number  (for  emergencies,  will  not  be
  37.            published anyplace.)
  38.                    
  39.         C. Your BBS or MAIL  System's  site  NAME,  (this  is  any  15
  40.            character or less name that you  choose,  within the limits
  41.            of  good  taste, Alphanumerics ONLY, no graphics characters
  42.            or punctuation, must begin with a letter.  Does NOT have to
  43.            be unique, as this is NOT your address.)
  44.                    
  45.         D. Your BBS or MAIL System's LOCATION, (city and state)
  46.  
  47.         E. Your BBS or MAIL System's DATA PHONE number.
  48.                 
  49.         F. Your BBS or MAIL System's  MAXIMUM  SUPPORTED BAUD RATE for
  50.            connections.
  51.                    
  52.         G. Your BBS or MAIL System's EXACT hours of  operation,  which
  53.            MUST, as a MINIMUM, include the "Zone Mail Hour"  beginning
  54.            at 09:00  Zulu(GMT),  which  equates  to:  05:00->06:00 EDT
  55.            during the summer and 04:00->05:00 EST during the winter in
  56.            the Eastern U.S.  Timezone.
  57.            
  58.         H. Your BBS or MAIL System's MODEM make/model/manufacturer and
  59.            EXACT    compatibility  information,  (i.e.    103J,  212A,
  60.            V.22bis, V.32,  V.32bis,  V.42,  V.42bis, MNP, HST, list of
  61.            all speeds supported etc.)
  62.            
  63.         I. Your BBS or MAIL System's network MAILER software NAME  and
  64.            exact VERSION, (for  example:  Binkleyterm v2.50, Frontdoor
  65.            v1.99c,  OPUS v1.70, D'Bridge  v1.30  etc)  You  need  only
  66.            provide the version of the software which actually performs
  67.            network sessions.

  69.         J. *IF* your stated hours  are  24  hours  per day, *AND* your
  70.            MAILER software SUPPORTS IT, you may choose to declare your
  71.            site as a "Continous Mail" (CM) site.  This means that your
  72.            system  MUST  be  willing and able to  accept  an  incoming
  73.            NETWORK  SESSION  whenever  it  answers  the phone.   (MOST
  74.            recent versions of mailer software support this feature and
  75.            it is HIGHLY recommended.)

  77.         K. *IF*  your  MAILER  software  supports the  "File  Request"
  78.            (F.Req) feature, AND you intend to provide  such a service,
  79.            you may request the appropriate NODELIST "flags" be  listed
  80.            for  your  site.    This is HIGHLY dependent upon  SOFTWARE
  81.            version,    which  is  why  item  "I."  above  is  required
  82.            information.  This feature is HIGHLY recommended for public
  83.            access sites.

  85.    REMEMBER:    A  Network Coordinator will AUTOMATICALLY  REJECT  any
  86.    registration request that is NOT received by NETMAIL!    Also,  any
  87.    request  lacking  information  in the list above will be  rejected,
  88.    (and if the item missing is a PHONE number, you  can  hardly expect
  89.    any notice in return!)
  90.    
  91. 5. MERELY SENDING THE REQUEST IS NOT THE COMPLETE PROCESS!!  The "rite
  92.    of Passage" into FidoNET has TWO parts:  A TEST of  your ability to
  93.    SEND  NETMAIL, (which is fulfilled by sending the request), *AND* a
  94.    TEST of your ability to RECEIVE NETMAIL, which is performed by your
  95.    Network Coordinator SENDING  you  a  REPLY to your request message.
  96.    If your Network Coordinator  is  UNABLE  TO DELIVER THAT REPLY, you
  97.    will NOT be registered!   Therefore,  once  you have submitted your
  98.    registration request, you are subject to  the rules of FidoNET, and
  99.    your SYSTEM MUST BE UP DURING THE  HOURS  YOU  SPECIFIED.   Network
  100.    Coordinators  are REAL PEOPLE, with REAL JOBS, REAL  FAMILIES,  and
  101.    (hopefully)  REAL LIVES of their own, so your response  MAY  be  as
  102.    much  as  a WEEK or MORE in coming - do  NOT  expect  an  IMMEDIATE
  103.    reply!  (For example:  As an "NC", I do "testing" in BATCHES, about
  104.    once every other week.)

  106. 6. WATCH YOUR SYSTEM  LOGS  and  once  you  see  that  your system has
  107.    RECEIVED a NETWORK SESSION  from  the Network Coordinator's system,
  108.    LOOK AROUND for "pending" mail  bundles  etc.    Since  your system
  109.    doesn't know its "official" address yet,  it  may  be  holding  the
  110.    "reply" message as an "in transit" bundle,  and  you  may have some
  111.    FUN  "getting  at  it"!    This is an  exercise  in  learning  your
  112.    software's  quirks!    Once  you  have  found  and  unpacked   your
  113.    NETMAIL'ed  response  from  the NC, if the registration request was
  114.    accepted, you will now have an ADDRESS of the form:

  116.         <Zone> : <NET> / <NODE>
  117.         
  118.    WHere <Zone> in the United States is the digit "1", and  the  <NET>
  119.    is  the Network to which you applied.  The <NODE> is your  specific
  120.    address within  that  <NET>.    BE SURE TO REMEMBER TO INSTALL THIS
  121.    ADDRESS INTO YOUR  SOFTWARE SO THAT IT WILL AUTOMATICALLY RECOGNIZE
  122.    MAIL ADDRESSED TO IT IN THE FUTURE!

  124. 7. Since  the  official  FidoNET  "NODELIST" is published WEEKLY, your
  125.    address may  not "appear" for a couple weeks AFTER your NC contacts
  126.    you.  BE  PATIENT,  as that updating process is largely out of your
  127.    NC's  hands, he can  do  nothing  to  accelerate  it.    Once  your
  128.    "ADDRESS" has appeared in a  "NODELIST"  or  "NODEDIFF", then other
  129.    Sysop's may have it, (if they  keep  their  NODELIST's up to date),
  130.    and you may negotiate with them for ECHOMAIL feeds.
