Moraff's WorldNet and many other Windows applications require at least 4 megs of RAM, and on most systems also require a 'swap file'. A swap file is a space on your hard drive that is used by Windows to store excess data.
For example, if you have used up 3.5 megs of RAM in a 4 meg system, and then you run another game that needs 1 meg of RAM, half of it fills the remaining RAM, and the other half is stored in the swap file.
Choosing your swap file settings:
1) Click on the 'Control Panel' icon (usually in the 'Main' group in the 'Program Manager').
2) Click on the '386 enhanced' icon (WorldNet requires a 386 or better).
3) Now click on the 'Virtual Memory' button. This will display your current settings.
4) Swap files usually range from 5 megs to 50 megs, depending on your application. WorldNet should be quite happy with about 10 megs. If you are using a 16 million color video driver, however, it may need to be larger.
5) If you want to change your settings, click the 'Change>>' button.
6) Now Windows suggests new settings. In this box, you can select which drive to use. You should use the drive that has the most free space on it.
7) There are 2 types of swap files. Permanent files are faster, but the file uses your hard drive space even when you are not using Windows. Temporary files are deleted when you exit Windows, but if Windows crashes, the file is still there.
8) You should select Permanent if there is enough space for one. This option is particularly good if you have recently defragmented your hard drive with a program like DOS's DEFRAG.
9) We recommend that you use the 'Recommended Size' that Windows gives you. You can not choose a larger size, but it can be smaller.
10) Some machines can have 32 bit access. If so, we recommend it.
11) Select 'Change>>' to make the changes permanent, and then allow Windows to restart itself.
Note: If your machine starts crashing after changing these settings, then try turning off 32 bit access and switching between Permanent and Temporary swap file settings.
Graphics:
Moraff's WorldNet is the first widely distributed 16 million color Windows gaming system. Note that MoraffWare also had the first high-res VGA game in the world, and was also the first to support Super-VGA graphics!
To best take advantage of your hardware, you should use as many colors as possible, up to 65,536. Even though your machine may support 16 million colors, it has been our experience that the difference is negligible, and that 65,536 runs much faster.
Using 65,536 colors also requires 1/3 less memory than 16 million.
Changing your video driver and setting the number of colors (this may require your original Windows disks and your video drivers disk supplied with your computer when you purchased it):
1) Click on the 'Window Setup' icon (usually in the 'Main' program group in the 'Program Manager').
2) You should see a small window titled 'Windows Setup' that shows your display and other information. Look at the line that says 'Display'.
It may read something like 'ET4000 800x600 65535 col. (small fonts)'. This means that your resolution is 800x600, you have 65,536 colors, and the font used for menus and titles is fairly small, leaving more room for your programs.
The ET4000 is the brand name of the chip that is used on the graphics card.
We recommend 800x600 in 65,536 colors for Moraff's WorldNet and most other Windows applications.
3) To change these settings, click on 'Options' and 'Change System Settings'. Now you should see a line titled 'Display:', followed by the same information from the previous window.
4) Click on the down-pointing arrow on the right of the display description, and this will show a list of choices.
5) If this list contains a selection for 800x600 in 65.536 colors, click on it. Now this description will replace the previous description.
6) If there is no selection for 800x600 in 65,536 colors, then choose the most colors you can find. After choosing the most colors, look for the highest resolution that supports those colors.
7) If you have a Super-VGA graphics card or better, and can't find a working high-res driver for your graphics card, then use the scrollbar to go all the way to the bottom of the list. Then select the 'Other Display' item at the bottom of the list.
8) Click on this item, and insert your video drivers disk into a floppy drive.
9) If you get an error message that says 'Setup cannot find...', then you may have to type something like 'a:\windows' or 'a:\win31'.
10) After you successfully load your new video drivers, your computer will restart.
11) If your computer now crashes when you try to load Windows, or gives you an error and returns to DOS and doesn't allow you to load Windows, then you will have to run 'Setup' from DOS.
To do this, go into your windows directory with a command like 'CD WINDOWS'. Then type 'setup' and hit enter. Use the up arrow to move the highlight up to the video drivers option and then hit 'Enter'.
Then move the cursor to another driver to try it out.

Sound and Music:
If you do not have a sound card, WorldNet can not make any sounds or music unless you have a sound card simulation program that plays digitized sounds from your computer's speaker. This may slow your computer a lot.
If you have a sound card, voices and sound effects should work without any problems. Music, on the other hand can be very difficult to get working properly.
Moraff's WorldNet uses the MIDI music format for all of its music. If WorldNet music doesn't sound right, you'll need to set up your 'MIDI Mapper' device.
The MIDI mapper is located in the 'Control Panel'. It is fairly complex, and offers a wide variety of choices, depending on your sound card.
If you can't figure out how to set up your MIDI mapper, call the tech-support number of your sound card manufacturer.
Explain to them that you are trying to set up your MIDI mapper to run 'General MIDI' format music.
Setting up Windows can be a complicated process, but you spent the money to get all this hardware, you might as well get the most out of it.
In addition, learning how to handle this kind of computer setup will make you more knowledgeable about computers. It will help you to be the master of the technology around you, instead of the slave!|
