  2.               AUTHORITATIVE LIST OF VIRTUAL PACKAGE NAMES

  7. Below is an authoritative list of virtual package names currently
  8. in-use or proposed and not objected to.  Please check the list below
  9. for things relevant to your packages.
  10.  
  11. New packages MUST use virtual package names where appropriate (this
  12. includes making new ones - read on).
  13.  
  14. Packages MUST NOT use virtual package names (except privately, amongst
  15. a cooperating group of packages) unless they have been agreed upon and
  16. appear in this list.
  17.  
  18. The latest version of this file can be found in
  19.         doc/package-developer/virtual-package-names-list.text
  20. on your local Debian FTP site.
  21.  
  22. The procedure for updating the list is as follows:
  23.  
  24. 1. Post to debian-devel saying what names you intend to use or what
  25.    other changes you wish to make.
  26.  
  27. 2. Wait a few days for comment.
  28.  
  29. 3. Mail the maintainer of the virtual package name list (Christian
  30.    Schwarz <schwarz@debian.org>) notifying him of the consensus reached (or
  31.    your suggestions if noone objected).  Please include a proposed brief
  32.    description of the new virtual name(s) for the list.  The list
  33.    maintainer will then post the new list to debian-devel and upload it
  34.    to the FTP site.

  36. 4. Go and use the new or changed names.

  59. kernel-image            Kernel image (vmlinuz, System.map, modules)
  60. httpd                   Any HTTP server
  61. postscript-viewer       Anything that can display Postscript files
  62. postscript-preview      Any preprocessor that creates Postscript output
  63. www-browser             Something that can browse html files
  64. awk                     Anything providing suitable /usr/bin/{awk,nawk}
  65. c-shell                 Anything providing a suitable /usr/bin/csh
  66. pdf-viewer              Anything that can display PDF files
  67. pdf-preview             Any preprocessor that creates PDF output
  68. compress                Anything that provides a true BSD compress command
  69. emacs                   Anything that provides the emacs editor
  70. sgmls                   An SGML parser which produces output compatible
  71.                         with James Clark's sgmls and nsgmls parsers
  72. wordlist                Anything that provides /usr/dict/words
  73. dotfile-module          Anything that provides a module for the
  74.                         Dotfile Generator
  75. ups-monitor             Anything that is capable of controlling an UPS
  76. tcl-interpreter         Anything that provides /usr/bin/tclsh
  77. tk-interpreter          Anything that provides /usr/bin/wish

  79. News and Mail:

  81. mail-transport-agent    Mail transport agents (Smail, Sendmail, &c)
  82. mail-reader             Mail user agents (Pine, Elm, mailx, &c)
  83. news-transport-system   Local news system (INN, C News or B News)
  84. news-reader             Any news reader (trn, tin, &c)
  85. inews                   /usr/bin/inews - local or remote news poster
  86. pgp                     A version of PGP (International or US)
  87. imap-client             Any mail reader capable of accessing remote mail
  88.                         folders using the IMAP protocol (e.g. Pine)
  89. imap-server             Any IMAP mail server

  91. Names of superseded packages Provided by the current ones:
