Another volcanic quarry, Puna Pau, supplied the cylindrical red topknots which were tied to the top of the statues before they were erected together on the ahu platforms, using levers and ramps.
It has been calculated that the largest statue, measuring 35 ft (11.5 m) high, would have taken thirty men one year to carve and ninety men two months to move it the 4 mls (6 km) from the quarry. It would have then taken ninety men three months to erect.
