-1 103 Z Banpo, a village in the Yellow River valley, was occupied by early farmers who cultivated the local area, growing millet as their main crop. Dates obtained from the site show that the village flourished between 4000 and 3500 BC.

1 101 X Over 130 adults were buried in the cemetery outside the ditch. Children were buried in urns between the houses.

2 101 X Pottery manufacture and firing took place in a special area to the north of the village. Six kilns were discovered, one containing the remains of pots still waiting to be fired.

3 101 X Banpo was encircled by a ditch 20 ft (6 m) deep and wide, enclosing a residential area of 30,000 square metres. Smaller ditches divided the village into smaller areas.

4 101 X In the later part of the occupation, a very large building, 160 square metres in area, was built at the centre of the village plaza.

5 102 A Over forty-five buildings were found at Banpo. Most were 10-18 ft (3-5 m) in diameter and may have housed individual families.

6 101 X Pigs were the most important animals in Banpo. They took on great religious and social significance, their bones being buried with many of China's early farmers.
