-1 101 Z The tomb of the Marquis of Zeng, excavated in 1978. Zeng was a small state later swallowed by the state of Chu. Set in a pit dug into the rock, divided into four chambers, stuffed with charcoal and sealed with mortar and black plaster, this burial contained some of the most exquisite treasures of the Warring States period.

2 103 C The coffins of Marquis Yi, containing his skeleton, lavish silks and treasures of jade, gold and bone. Both the inner plank coffin and the outer bronze-framed coffin, weighing 7 metric tons, were painted with lacquer designs.

3 101 X The north chamber, with an arsenal of dagger-axes, halberds, spears, armour, shields, chariot fittings and other weapons. Over 3000 bronze arrowheads were recovered from the tomb.

4 102 D On the floor of the tomb were stacked many elaborate and costly bronze vessels, and everywhere were tumbled lacquered furniture, other wooden objects and musical instruments. Remarkable bronze and lacquered statues in the east chamber include a bronze crane and a seated stag.

5 101 X Small hatch-shaped doors in the walls of each chamber allowed the spirit of the marquis to roam his mortuary palace in the afterlife.

#9 103 E Two instruments ('paixiao') belong to that most ancient family of wind-instruments, pan-pipes. Made in this case from thirteen lengths of bamboo tubing, of different lengths, tied together with cord and then lacquered, they closely resemble ancient pipes of both European and American traditions. The longest pipes are just under 9 ins (21 cm) long. Still played in many parts of the world today, it was from instruments of this broad type that the drilled wooden pipes of ancient Rome and the large, sophisticated pottery pipes of the Nazca evolved.

7 101 X Beneath the mound, below ground-level, was a raft of huge, ancient wooden beams, preserved by waterlogging: when these were lifted they proved to be roof timbers, revealing a suite of large burial chambers. When all the water and mud was pumped out they were found to be filled with all manner of grave-goods.

6 101 X Coffins of the marquis' concubines, possibly sacrificed with their dead master, buried with bamboo mats, a few jades and wooden combs. Twenty-one concubines and female attendants were buried in the tomb, eleven in this chamber and ten in the east chamber where the marquis was interred. The smallest coffin there contained the skeleton of the marquis' dog.
