1 101 X There were a number of capitals during the Western Zhou period. Following the defeat of the Shang, the Zhou rulers established a new capital just to the west of the Shang capital of Anyang. Shang people provided the labour and many Shang customs continued in the area, including forms of burial. Luoyang was another capital, which became the main Zhou capital in 771 BC when the western territories were overrun by nomads. A standing army was garrisoned at Luoyang for the whole Western Zhou period.

2 101 X Qishan was the predynastic centre of Zhou culture, founded by Tan Fu, great-grandfather of the future Zhou king Wen. Tan Fu built a walled city with pounded earth foundations for palatial buildings in the style of the Shang. Fifteen thousand oracle bones from the palace suggest large-scale divination and describe the importance of the Zhou in the last century of Shang rule.
