The Punic Wars were fought between Rome and Carthage for control of the western Mediterranean. Relations between Carthage and Rome were initially good and included an alliance against King Pyrrhus of Epirus in 277 BC. However, rivalry over Sicily brought about the First Punic War (264-241 BC). It began when the Carthaginians attacked the strategically important city of Messana, which was allied to Rome.
