Transcription: In 500 BC the Olmec dominated Mesoamerica but powerful new centres were developing in the Mexican Highlands especially at Monte Alban in the Oaxaca Valley. On the slopes of this hill a great town was built with pyramids and temples on its summit. Carvings depict the naked corpses of defeated kings. Around AD 300, Monte Alban's expansion was checked by the powerful Teotihuacan state in the Valley of Mexico. Beginning as a place of pilgrimage, Teotihuacan had grown into a vast city.
