Around 2400 BC these were replaced by trilithons and a circle of massive sarsen stones brought from the Marlborough Downs, 28 miles (45 km) away. These were dressed and erected with a curving lintel using mortise and tenon joints. The method of erection (a massive task) has been much debated.
