Minimum Requirements:
--------------------
- IBM AT 80286 or compatible, or better
- At least 2 MB of extended memory recommended
- A minimum of 450 Kbytes of conventional memory
- DOS version 3.3 or higher
- VGA display
- Microsoft compatible mouse
- Approximately 8 MB free hard drive space
Installation:
------------
Visual Computer Dictionary Plus must be installed onto a hard disk in
order to run properly. It will not run from floppy disks. We assume that
you have downloaded one or more compressed (ZIP, ARJ, etc.) files from
a BBS or online service.
To install, first decompress the all files into an empty subdirectory on
your hard drive. Change to that directory and type INSTALL.
You will be asked for the letter of the destination drive, which can be
the same as the source drive; the program will be installed into a
subdirectory called VDICTION on the destination drive.
A successful installation will be confirmed at the end of the
installation program.
Once installed, simply type VDICTION to run the program.
The entire program will only take up about 8 MB of hard disk space.
Approximate time it takes to install Visual Computer Dictionary Plus:
--------------------------------------------------------------------
IBM AT 80486/66 or compatible system 5 minutes
with extended memory
IBM AT 80386/40 or compatible systems 15 minutes
with extended memory
IBM AT 80286/12 or compatible systems 2 hours (ouch!)
without extended memory
IBM AT 80486/25 laptop system 10 minutes
with extended memory
Running under Windows (DOS prompt DOSPRMPT.EXE):
------------------------------------------------
Visual Computer Dictionary Plus will run with Windows active in the
background. If you wish to leave Windows in order to run the Visual Computer
Dictionary Plus program, you can go to the DOS prompt from Windows and
start the Visual Computer Dictionary Plus program the usual way.
When you are finished and quit Visual Computer Dictionary Plus, just type
"EXIT" at the DOS prompt to get back to Windows. You need at least 4MB
of extended memory to run Visual Computer Dictionary Plus satisfactorily
from Windows.
[Alt] plus [underscored letter] keys in command buttons:
---------------------------------------------
Whenever you see an underscored letter in command buttons, you can
also access that function by pressing the "ALT" key and the underscored
letter. To go back from your present location after it is activated,
just press the "ESC" key.
Disk size:
---------
The Visual Computer Dictionary Plus software package is available on
3.5 inch (1.44 MB) high density disks only!
In case you cannot use 3.5 inch high density disks to install the program
and you need 5.25 inch (1.2 MB) high density disks, please contact us as
soon as possible and we will try to accommodate you with your needs.
Suggestions for optimizing the Visual Computer Dictionary Plus program:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Defragment your hard drive since a fragmented drive slows down disk access.
Use a disk cache (for example SMARTDRV.EXE).
On older 80286 AT systems without extended memory, use the FASTOPEN command.
