Kaleidoscopic Simulation Screen Saver for Windows 3.1 version 2.0
Features : Good results on standard VGA
Takes advantage of 256 colors, and HighColor, and TrueColor
modes when available.
Takes advantage of accelerated Graphics cards (On an accelerated
Card, this has to be the fastest kaleidoscope in existence!)
Cheap.
Flexible.
Fully Configurable.
Installation :
1) Place the file kaleid.scr into your windows directory.
2) Run CONTROL PANEL.
3) Double click on the Desktop Icon.
4) In the Screen Saver Section, under name,
select Kaleidoscope Simulation.
Press [Setup] to configure kaleidoscope.
Press [Test] to test out the configuration you have selected.
For Best Results, EXPERIMENT with the settings. It's fun, and can give
you totally different results. I run 4 or 5 different video modes, and
use different settings for each mode. So play with the settings a little.
For the fastest results, set line width to 1!!! Note however that the
fastest display is not always the most stunning.
The settings are explained as follows:
Speed Speed is in reality the number of lines that are drawn before the
program lets windows do a task switch. Valid values range from 1 to
100. If you want kaleid 2.0 to go the same speed as kaleid 1.0, set
this option to 1. If you want the maximum possible speed, you're going
to have to experiment a little with it, because it varies from system
to system. If you are running a 386sx, and have a "dumb" graphics
card, try 5 or 10. If you are running a 486 with an accelerated
graphics card, try 30,50,or 100. This program is FAST FAST FAST with
an accelerated card, and it looks like an entirely different program,
so hold on to your seat! Be aware that there is a point past wich
increasing the speed setting won't visibly increase how fast the program
runs.
Number of reflections :
This is the number of lines that are drawn on screen at once. To make
kaleid 2.0 look more like kaleid 1.0, select 4.
Average number of lines between color changes:
This option is fairly self explanatory, it determines how often the
lines will change colors.
Line width:
Line width is the width of the lines in pixels. Please note that any
setting other than 1 is going to be ALOT slower... It's almost a bug,
but the problem is with the way Windows draws thick lines, that it's
just too darn slow.
Smooth color transition :
This option specifies that when the colors change, they change to a
color that is close to the current line color. It works best with a
Truecolor, or Highcolor card.
Percentage of Kaleidoscopic Overlap:
This is the amount that the Mirror images overlap in the center of the
screen, expressed as a percentage of overlap. 0% overlap means that
they do not overlap at all, and 100% overlap means that they overlap
fully, so that each mirror image has the entire screen to roam.
Erase Old lines:
Selecting this option causes kaleid to remove the oldest lines on the
screen, and the number of lines that stay on screen at any one time
can be adjusted.
There is also a password protect mode that (attempts to) prevent "Casual
Observers" from gaining access to your system. Please note that this is in no
way a fool-proof way of securing your system. (not that there exists such a
thing) So take the option with a grain of salt.
Problems : If it is taking along time for the screen saver to dissapear after
you hit a key or move the mouse, decrease the value you have for
speed.
Here's a neat looking setting for Hicolor and Truecolor owners :
Select smooth color transition ON, number of reflections=8,
average number of lines between color changes=1, speed=1,
Line width=5 to 10.
