Short Description:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Generate professional quality crossword puzzles with a single
keystroke. A random search process thru the 7000+ dictionary
(words and clues) ensures that you get a different puzzle every
time. Solve "on screen" or print out for later use. Extend the
dictionary with your own words, or make new dictionaries on any
subject (movies, sport, history etc). Includes a unique feature
which allows you to include a single "special" word which could
be a personal greeting or advertising slogan.
Long Description:
WELCOME TO "THE DAILY CROSSWORD".
YOUR PASSPORT TO THE WORLD OF TOTALLY AUTOMATED CROSSWORD CONSTRUCTION.
Forget about searching through piles of dictionaries to find just the
right word to complete your crossword. THE DAILY CROSSWORD will do all
of the searching for you, and if there is no "right" word, it will auto-
matically back-track, remove a word and continue on from there until the
crossword is completed. All you have to do is select a dictionary and a
lattice, and then tell THE DAILY CROSSWORD to go to work. In just a few
minutes you will have a brand new puzzle to print out or to solve "on
screen".
If you enjoy solving crosswords on paper, then you will enjoy solving
them "on screen" even more. No longer will you need to search through a
list of clues. THE DAILY CROSSWORD knows all clues, and it will display
the ACROSS and DOWN clues as you move your focus from square to square.
There is even a "cheat" key which allows you to peek at the answer, one
letter at a time if the going gets too hard, and if you run out of time,
you can save your partial solution and come back to it later.
If you are creating crosswords for publication, then you will want a
printed copy. THE DAILY CROSSWORD allows you to print a blank lattice,
a list of clues and a solution. It provides fine control over the format
of the clues, in terms of the number of columns per page, the number of
character positions per column, and the number of lines per page. Any
printer able to emulate the EPSON 8 pin graphics mode will produce crisp
clear printouts suitable for publication.
THE DAILY CROSSWORD comes complete with a selection of ready to use
lattice designs. Select the lattice you want to use from this pool, or
design your own. As well as creating new lattice designs, you can amend
existing designs, and even delete designs which you do not like. A
lattice may be any square or rectangle up to 47 x 47 squares.
The shareware version of THE DAILY CROSSWORD comes with a dictionary
of almost 8000 words, while registration makes available a dictionary of
over 30000 words. It is currently possible to select from up to seventy
dictionaries, and this feature will be put to good use as a greater
selection dictionaries on a number of subjects becomes available.
A comprehensive set of facilities is included to permit a library of
dictionaries to be maintained:-
: Creating a new dictionary is as simple as thinking up a suitable name
and typing it in. THE DAILY CROSSWORD takes care of all of the house-
keeping for you.
: Additional words and clues can easily be added to any new or existing
dictionary.
: Existing words may have their clues altered, or multiple clues may be
entered for each word. Alternatively, an existing word may be removed
entirely by deleting its clue.
: Complete Backup and Restore facilities allow the transfer of a copy
of the currently selected dictionary to or from one or more diskettes
in either drive A or B.
: Using the Dictionary Statistics function allows you to see the total
number of words in the dictionary, the number having each of the 26
starting letters, and the total for each word length from 3 to 15.
After a crossword design is completed, the words used are marked in
the dictionary in a way which reduces the chance of them being reused in
subsequent designs. This makes it most unlikely that THE DAILY CROSSWORD
will ever produce the same result twice.
Perhaps the most unique feature of THE DAILY CROSSWORD is its ability
to embed a message (Personal greeting or advertising slogan) into the
puzzle. If a lattice is designed so that it has just one word with more
than the normal maximum of 15 letters, then the program will insert a
"special word". This word must be entered using the SPECIAL WORD feature
before using the MAKE function, and may contain any group of words
desired. (no spaces please).
