  6. Installation

  9. PUDBrowser is a 32 bit windows program written for Windows 95.  We have
  10. not attempted to run it in Windows 3.1/3.11 and don't know if it will work
  11. in that environment.  In order to have a chance to work in 3.11, you will
  12. need to install the latest version of Win32s.  If anyone tries this, please
  13. let us know the results.  We may port to a 16 bit version if there is
  14. sufficient interest.

  16. To install PUD Browser, copy the file pudbrows.exe to your Warcraft II 
  17. PUD's folder.  The program can be executed from any directory, but it is 
  18. more convenient to have it with the PUD files.

  20. To run PUD Browser, click on pudbrows.exe from Windows 95 Explorer or add
  21. a shortcut to your program menu or desktop.

  24. Program Functionality

  27. Opening files:
  28.  
  29. The program should be very intuitive for anyone familiar with the Windows
  30. 95 user interface.  Individual PUD files are opened using the normal 
  31. File/Open menu selection or Open button on the tool bar.  Once a file is 
  32. opened, the window can be resized in the normal way and the relative sizes
  33. of the two window panes can be adjusted by moving the splitter bar.

  35. Browsing all files in a folder:
  36.  
  37. Sequential Browse allows a collection of files in the same folder 
  38. (directory) to be selected at once and browsed using the Navigation menu or
  39. equivalent arrow buttons on the tool bar.  This feature is activated by the
  40. File/Browse menu or Browse tool bar button.  This opens a file selection 
  41. dialog box, similar to the file open dialog, which allows multiple files to
  42. be selected.  Multiple file selection is as follows:

  44.  - To select a contiguous set of files, select the first file with the left
  45.    mouse button and the last file with the left mouse button with the shift
  46.    key held down.
  47.  
  48.  - To select a random set of files from the directory, select the first 
  49.    file with the left mouse button, and select all subsequent files with 
  50.    the left mouse button with the control key held down.

  52. Typing file names in the edit box of this dialog is not supported (as if
  53. anyone would really want to type in a list of file names by hand anyway).

  55. Resource indicator:

  57. The amount of gold in a mine or oil in a patch can be determined by moving 
  58. the mouse cursor over the mine or patch in the map view.  When a mine or 
  59. patch is selected, the cursor changes from an arrow to a cross and the 
  60. amount of the resource appears in the status line at the bottom of the 
  61. window.

  63. Unit display option:
  64.  
  65. The Options menu allows the user to select whether to show only the player
  66. starting positions or to show the positions of all player units.  If 
  67. starting positions are shown, people players are depicted by a circle and 
  68. computer players are depicted by a square.  This option can be either 
  69. seleted via the Options menu or the unit selection tool bar buttons.

  71. Print and print preview:

  73. PUD Browser currently supports printing one PUD/page on both color and 
  74. black & white printers and in either landscape and portrait mode.  The 
  75. Print Setup, Print Preview, and Print functionality work as for any other
  76. Windows 95 application.  This functionality has been throughly tested on 
  77. HP Laser Jet 4L (b&w) and HP 560C (color) printers.  Any problems with 
  78. other printers should be reported to the address below, with a sample 
  79. printout if possible.

  82. Known Errors

  85. There are several minor known errors with the current version of PUD 
  86. Browser:
  87.  
  88. 1. After printing a PUD, the resource amount selection with the cursor 
  89.    doesn't show the value in the status line.  This is only true for the 
  90.    current PUD; if another PUD is selected, the resource indicator works 
  91.    correctly.

  93. 2. When running in 1024x768/16bit color video mode and the window is 
  94.    resized, the map has a slight checkerboard appearance at some sizes.
  95.    Black & White print preview also exhibits this behavior.  This doesn't 
  96.    happen at 256 colors.

  98. 3. The map has a checkerboard appearance when printed in black & white in
  99.    landscape mode.
