  5.                                   TRUE STORY

  7. Hello All,
  8.  
  9. Way back in 1937 and when I was in School and the Lesson was German, we were
  10. doing an exercise that was a part of a play by Goethe.  At the end of this
  11. exercise it finished with the expression: Der Vorhanf faelt. (The Curtain
  12. Falls)
  13.  
  14. At lunchtime as was our wont (That is 'our gang') we broke bounds and went off
  15. downstream along the river Trent. The reason was that the Trent had recently
  16. risen and overflowed its banks and dumped a barge on the bank before it
  17. retreated.
  18.  
  19. On of the madder members went to the edge of the bank, which had been undercut
  20. by the river and jumped up and down shouting "Der Vorhang faelt"  You've
  21. guessed it: the bank gave way and Doug was dumped in the River. !!  We got him
  22. out but left him to explain to the Teachers how he came to be absolutely wet
  23. through when it wasn't raining.

  25. 28 years were to go by before I married my XYL, and told her about this
  26. incident and then forgot all about it.
  27.  
  28. Another 26 years went by before I met up with Doug again when I found out
  29. where he was living and we went through all the old things that we had done as
  30. lads. Of course the "Der Vorhang faelt" came up and at last I heard how he got
  31. out of trouble.

  33. He told tehe teachers that he had been walking through the Rock Gardens nearby
  34. when he came across a lady who was struggling to get something out of the
  35. large Ornamental low walled in pond that contained Goldfish and Water lilies.
  36. He said that this lady had dropped her handbag in the pool when she was
  37. feeding the Goldfish and couldn't quite reach. So he volunteered to lean over
  38. the wall almost upside down if this lady held on to his legs. Alas he said my
  39. legs slipped out of her hands and I fell head first into the pool.

  41. Well that got him off the hook and at last I knew the truth or rather the
  42. untruth that he had used to avoid six of the best.
  43.  
  44. Of course I told my XYL the rest of the story and thought no more of it.
  45.  
  46. About 2 months later (June of this year) and the last morning that we were
  47. staying at a Gasthof, just over the border from Bavaria before moving off to
  48. stay with DG3RBU (Johannes of the BayCom/Digicom Team) the following happened.

  50. She always gets up first and went over to the window.  The curtains hang on a
  51. heavy pole plugged into the wall. We had noticed that it was a bit shaky but
  52. kept forgetting to tell the proprietoress about it.  As my XYL pulled back the
  53. Curtains the Pole and all the lot came tumbling down.  Now my XYL understands
  54. far too much German at joke times for my liking, but is always too timid to
  55. ever have a go at speaking the language; but this morning she turned to me
  56. lying in bed and like a great actress calmy said "Ach, der Vorhang faelt."
  57.  
  58. There nearly was another accident, because I was bursting at the seams and
  59. just fell about laughing.

  61. After rising and making myself comfortable I managed with a few chairs and the
  62. table to get this lot back up again. I wonder if when we stay there again this
  63. year if I can find out what the next Act was !!
