Primer for 1993 Motorsport Almanac
1993 Motoring News Almanac : An explanation.
Andrea Moda - Not very successful F1 team. Best performance was about 3
laps of pre-qualifying by Roberto Moreno. They were kicked out of F1 for
a number of reasons!
January ; French Anti-Tobacco Advertising laws.....
Carlos Sainz and Didier Auriol had swapped camps TOYOTA><LANCIA
Will Nigel ever live down those comments he made at the 1992 Awards?
Colin McRae - well know for converting a shiny car to a pile of scrap - and
winning too!
February ; More McRae & Mansell!
March ; Couldn't resist this one, even though the second seat was filled
when it was printed!
More McRae and Mansell quips!
April ; Touring car drivers! Poor Perry McCarthy, after escaping from Andrea
Moda Formula!
BRM digging out old plans, and those drivers too!
The German Touring Car Championship was getting depleted after BMW & OPEL
dropped out after 1992.
Bob Light & his Ultima - A VERY fast man in his Kit Car.
May ; More Perry McCarthy, Andrea Moda, Bob Light, Mansell/Indycar. & GTCC!
June ; Mansell, Bob Light, and Mercedes slipping up where Audi did last year!
However Audi didn't shoot itself in the foot - Mercedes did it!
July ; Following the French Anti-Tobacco laws the French GP had to be moved
(it has since been re-instated after a Government policy change).
More French Anti-Tobacco funnies!
August ; McRae again!
September ; Alan Randall, the man that was going to buy no less than 5 Jags
for the 1992 World Sports Car Championship, but didn't when the sponsors
pulled out. Since then he has had numerous abortive attempts at running to
flight teams, all running out of loot = Brabham was the latest in a line!
(remember Englebert tyres from the '50s?)
October ; BTCC, Soper vs Cleland '92! Formula Ford swaps to the more powerful
ZETA engine for 1993, so funnies for 1994 - plus some one-up-manship from
Vauxhall and Renault!
Australian organising body - CAMS and their attempts at keeping their series
AUSTRALIAN!
Funnies for the 2CV (as per Formula Ford!) and Bob Light!
November ; Some poor soul lost his Sierra Cosworth between stages in the '92
Lombard. More Alan Randall and Perry McCarthy!
December ; FISA recently announced that it didn't think Formula 3000 could
continue. Better tell that to all of the teams that spend the millions on
upkeep, and that they have full grids. Perhaps they got mixed up with the
British series that has about 10 competitors!
More Mansell! Will he ever live it down!
Poor Tiff Needell, will he ever make a rally driver? Remember 1992 & Top Gear!
I hope that this explains enough for you to have a chuckle at the Almanac.
Those of you that read Motoring News and Autosport will know all about it
anyway!

1993 Motorsport Almanac.
The following information was gleaned from the 1993 Motoring News Almanac.
An astrologer writes....
1993 Motoring News Almanac is brought to you by Andrea Moda, high powered
fashion you can trust.
January (OK, so it's nearly all gone!)
A court in Brittany authorises the arrest of Keke Rosberg, who has been seen
buying a packet of 20 cigarettes (a certian brand) from a corner shop in
Helsinki.
Absent-mindedly Carlos Sainz and Didier Auriol get into the wrong cars after
parc ferme on the Monte Carlo Rally. Colin McRae knocks down the Col de Turini,
but still finishes third.
February
Nigel Mansell makes a public apology for over-looking the achievment of
Jimmy Clark, who was the first UK driver to win the Indy 500. "He was obviously
a great all round driver: anyone who can win the World Championship twice and
go on to win the RAC Rally twice must be considered one of the greats," blurts
Nige.
Colin McRae reduces Stockholm to rubble on his way to a comfortable victory
in the Swedish Rally.
March
Frank Williams organises a Le Mans start at South African GP and 14 hopefuls
line up for dash into second Williams seat. Linford Christie gets the drive,
but retires with cramp after 14 laps.
Colin McRae lapes the entire field on the opening round of the Mobil 1 /
Top Gear British Rally Championship.
Nigel Mansell hints at his possible retirement from Indycar racing. "I'd like
to become the first British driver to win the F1 World Championship," he says
of his next mission.
April
Andy Rouse's new BTCC Ford Mondeo put on pole position by Perry McCarthy.
Unfortunately Rouse punts his partner off at Copse on lap one. "His tyres
had gone off, I couldn't avoid him," explains Andy. Perry not bothered; it's
the furthest he's been in a race since 1989.
After it's sports car racing venture failed, BRM turns it's attention to F1.
The new car will use two V16's geared together on a common crankshaft and
will be driven by Peter Westbury, Conny Anderson, Larry Perkins, Francois
Migault, Alex Soler-Roig, Teddy Pilette and Peter Gethin.
Alfa Romeo withdraws from the GTCC, leaving Mercedes-Benz as the sole
participant. Merc says it will continue to contest the series, as it is
confident that it's car has winning potential.
Bob Light's Ultima wins the Nurburgring 1000Km, opening round of the FISA
GT Series.
May
Perry McCarthy completes a full lap of a circuit - Parliament is reconvened to
give a special vote of thanks. McCarthy qualifies Andrea Moda on pole position
for Mallory Park Formula Libre race, but after a race long dice is finally
pipped for victory by Bob Light's Ultima.
Indianapolis crowd trebled by people drinkin supermarket lager and wearing
union jack T-shirts. Race runs under yellos throughout, due to spectators
on the track.
A string of victories in the GTCC has lead to considerable weight penalties
for Mercedes. The average 190 now weighs four tons. Michael Kahlfuss takes
advantage of the power-to-weight situation and enters his Trabant for the
balance of the series.
June
Nigel Mansell says it would be great to become the first British driver to
win the RAC Hillclimb Championship.
Bob Light becomes the first man to win Le Mans single-handed. The Ultima
driver beat the factory-assisted Joest Porsches by 203 laps.
Mercedes excluded from the GTCC after is successfully protests it's own
crankshaft alignment. Trabant's title hopes are threatened by the arrival
of John Haugland's Skoda Favorit.
July
The French GP takes place at Pembrey. Larousse and March fail to arrive as they
can't afford to pay the Severn Bridge toll fee. French farmers set fire to the
bridge in protest.
(Picture: Camel surrounded by Arabs) July 14th: Egyptian environmentalists
protect a compatriot who has been sentenced to death by a French court for
sharing his name with a cigarette brand.
August
Colin McRae makes a huge impression on Finland with an enourmous accident on
it's World Championship Rally. FISA announce that next year's event will
be called the 1001 Lakes.
September
Alan Randall tempts Juan-Manuel Fangio back to GP racing, the five times
world champion reportedly happy after testing the new front engined,
Englebert-shod Brabham at Modena.
October
The final and deciding BTCC round takes place on a figure of eight course.
At the Formula Ford Festival, Ford announces a power increase for the
category in 1994.
On the Monday after the FF Festival, Formula Vauxhall Junior announces that it
will have more power in 1994. Formula Renault regulations are also revised.
All chassis will reature the RS4 V10 in 1994.
In an attempt to make the Australian Touring Car Championship more equable,
CAMS announces revised series regulations: any cars whose names don't begin
with "H" or "F" and which don't run pushrod V8s built in Australia will
henceforth have to run on three-inch diameter wheels (maximum of three) and
must be fuelled by aromatherapy oil.
Nissan finishes 1-2 at Bathurst.
National Citroen 2CV series announces power increase: 28bhp will be permissable
from 1994. Several competitors send off for a set of GTCC regulations.
Bob Light says his Ultima probably needs more power, too, as he won his last
race at Snetterton by less than two laps.
November
Alan Randall buys Panhard et Levassor and enters a 14 car team in the London-
Brighton run. Perry McCarthy does some pre-event testing and reflects that he
wishes he'd had something this quick for his abortive F1 campaign.
Entire Ford Escort rally team pinched before RAC Rally. Cars used in ram-raids
in Boreham, Dagenham and Detroit.
December
Colin McRae's co-driver, Derek Ringer, retires from rallying to take up a post
with the Red Cross in Beirut. "Anything for a quiet life," says the Scot.
Rapidly running out of things to kill off, FISA's World Council scraps F1 on
the grounds of escalating costs. It will be replaced by a new formula for
450bhp single-seaters with three litre V8s.
Nigel Mansell is voted British Sports Personality of the Year : "It's nice
to be the first Briton to win the award," he suggests.
Tiff Needell finishes the RAC Rally.

That's it. For those that don't understand everything, a "primer" will follow
which will give the "explainations" for some of the above!
Let's see how true it becomes......
