  1. The Scientists' Ball

  3. With apologies to non-scientists, 
  4. who might not understand what follows....
  5.  
  6. The Royal Society recently invited several eminent  scientists to 
  7. a Summer Ball. The following is a summary of some of the comments 
  8. contained in their replies.

  12. Lambert hoped there would be plenty of beer.
  13.  
  14. Nicol hoped not to drink too much or he'd be seeing double.
  15.  
  16. Fermi declared it a good idea and thought they'd make a pile.

  18. Aufbau and Pauli said they weren't coming on principle.
  19.  
  20. In any case Pauli said it was too exclusive.
  21.  
  22. Le Chatelier opposed the idea on principle.
  23.  
  24. Bohr was pleased to join such an eminent circle.
  25.  
  26. Schiff thought the whole idea very base.
  27.  
  28. Lewis made some very acid comments.
  29.  
  30. Lowry and Bronsted looked forward to finding a pair to conjugate with.
  31.  
  32. Werner didn't understand the invitation, it was too complex for him.
  33.  
  34. Sidgewick and Powell weren't in shape for it and thought they'd be a lone pair.
  35.  
  36. Heisenberg wanted to go but was uncertain if he could.
  37.  
  38. Schrodinger waived the invitation.
  39.  
  40. de Broglie was in two minds about it. So was Jung, but for different reasons.

  42. Joseph Mendel wanted to know was it OK to come in his jeans.
  43.  
  44. Newton didn't appreciate the gravity of the situation.
  45.  
  46. Hund said he'd take a partner only if there was no other choice.
  47.  
  48. Lyman wondered was it the first of a series.
  49.  
  50. Pfund thought it was in the right bracket as he had lots of passion.
  51.  
  52. Einstein said he'd definitely be there but would be relatively late.
  53.  
  54. Pasteur would come now that he'd resolved his problems.
  55.  
  56. Seeborg would need someone to look after his katz.
  57.  
  58. Doebereiner was having a 'menage a trois'.
  59.  
  60. Geiger responded immediately. You can always count on him!
  61.  
  62. Hofmann was happy to go provided his degradation wasn't too public.
  63.  
  64. Arrhenius said he'd get over if he could find the energy.
  65.  
  66. Grahams response was very diffuse.
  67.  
  68. Nobel thought it would go with a bang and hoped there would be some prizes.
  69.  
  70. Oppenheimer was sure it would go like a bomb.
  71.  
  72. Darwin thought it was a creative idea and hoped it would evolve.
  73.  
  74. Avogadro declined because he had a number of other invitations.
  75.  
  76. Mulliken charged at the invitation.
  77.  
  78. Kekule said he'd ring back.
  79.  
  80. Kelvin gave a very cool response.
  81.  
  82. Chadwicks response was quite neutral.
  83.  
  84. Dalton was quite partial to the idea.
  85.  
  86. Rutherford was able to come but would have to split early.
  87.  
  88. Crick replied to the wrong address. He'd got into a right twist.

  90. Aston said that if there was any trouble he could sort out the heavies.

  92. Fischer thought it was a sweet idea.

  94. Mendeleyev was in his element but thought it might be a bad  time 
  95. of the month for his wife to come.

  97. Archimedes had better things to do.

  99. Babbage had a car problem: couldn't work out what was wrong with the engine.
  100.  
  101. Kreb, Born and Haber wanted to cycle there.
  102.  
  103. Haber wanted his invitation processed.
  104.  
  105. Andrews, salt of the Earth, hoped there was liver on the menu.
  106.  
  107. Fahrenheit couldn't make it - he had a temperature!

  109. Napier missed it, he was cutting logs.

  111. Bunsen had a burning desire to bring an old flame.
  112.  
  113. Fourier thought the band a little out of harmony.

  115. Coulomb went free of charge.

  117. Torricelli said he'd be happy to come, he wasn't under much pressure.

  119. Curie radioed active acceptance.

  121. Ohm resisted the temptation.

  123. Correction: Ohm resisted temptation and conducted himself with dignity.

  125. Hooke didn't want to overstretch himself.

  127. Mach got booked for speeding on the way: he was doing 720 mph.

  129. Fraunhofer got his lines crossed.

  131. Everyone  was waiting for Maxwell to open the wine but he'd  left 
  132. the corkscrew back at the house.

  134. Plimsoll arrived with his feet wet.

  136. Pythagoras wasn't invited - they thought he was too square.

  138. Gay-Lussac wasn't invited - they thought he was!

  140. Von Guericke was too busy playing with his hemispheres.

  142. Davy couldn't read his invitation because he'd lost his lamp.

  144. Joule just didn't have the energy to come.
  145.  
  146. Watt almost made it but ran out of steam.
  147.  
  148. Laplace wanted to transform the event.
  149.  
  150. Ampere thought balls were against current fashion.
  151.  
  152. Planck was too thick to understand the invitation.
  153.  
  154. Henry just couldn't be induced to come.
  155.  
  156. Lloyd, on reflection, decided his presence may cause interference.
  157.  
  158. Volta realised the event had potential but was unable to make it due to piles.
  159.  
  160. Doppler wasn't invited, he was too shifty.
