  3. "There'll be an increase in taxes"?  It is, of course, true that
  4. politicians *never* use those exact words but if you listen closely
  5. to what politicians say, however, you will find that they *do* in
  6. fact warn people of coming tax hikes. In fact they say very little
  7. else.  Consider the following...

  9. "We're all going to have to tighten our belts." -->
  10. "There'll be a *general* tax hike."
  11.  
  12. "The public can count on us to keep our promises." -->
  13. "There'll be a *resultant* tax hike."
  14.  
  15. "The next budget will include some creative financing." -->
  16. "There'll be a *creative* tax hike."
  17.  
  18. "We're drafting up a plan for tax reform." -->
  19. "There'll be an *innovative* tax hike."
  20.  
  21. "We're in consultation." -->
  22. "There'll be a *recommended* tax hike."
  23.  
  24. "This isn't the time for drastic measures." -->
  25. "There'll be *selected* tax hikes."
  26.  
  27. "We represent the ordinary people." -->
  28. "There'll be a *corporate* tax hike."
  29.  
  30. "We haven't decided on our policy yet." -->
  31. "We're considering a tax hike."

  33. "No comment." -->
  34. "I'm not denying that there'll be a tax hike."
