Greetings all!
And congratulations to those who have reached their 25th wedding
anniversary. And if you find yourself invited to such an occasion, as I
was recently, you may find what follows very useful...
Silver Wedding Gifts
--------------------
Now it behoves one well to take extreme care when selecting a present
for the happy couple.
Of course, in keeping with the custom on these occasions to recognise
the event as a Silver Wedding anniversary, the first prerequisite is
that the gift should be of silver. If you are in a position where you
know that one or both of the good people concerned have interests in
amateur radio, then a bale of silver wire may be all that is necessary.
But if only one is of such technical persuasion, then this could pose a
problem...
But before we proceed, it is worth considering a small matter of
economics. We know that the skin-effect at radiofrequencies causes most
of the RF to travel on the surface, so silver PLATED articles are quite
acceptable by the majority of right thinking radio amateurs, who may
even distain bulk silver as a fearful waste of good materials. And
indeed, the non-technical partner should have no undue difficulty in
concurring, as they cannot see the inside of a solid silver artifact
anyway. Now what of the nature of the present itself? It should be
versatile, and the the good taste of the non-technical partner should
not be ignored, while ensuring that the desires of the other partner are
met also. How is this problem best resolved? A strong candidate must be
a silver (or silver plated) PICTURE FRAME. These are very easily
obtained, reasonably priced, and - yes, you've guessed it - can be used
to hold any picture of the appropriate size that may be chosen by the
recipients. A frame may also be used for maps and diagrams - NOT circuit
diagrams (in deference to the non-technical partner).
On the other hand, just in case the technical partner is not fully aware
of the potential of such an article, it is important to include the FULL
INSTRUCTIONS for the PROPER use of the frame....
As we well know, the properties of Ag at VHF/UHF are second to none, and
to realise these benefits to the full, the recipient of a frame may also
need to put to good use about 8 silver tea-spoons and 2 silver knives,
to implement a device commonly referred to in the literature as a
skeleton slot fed Yagi array. If reason prevails, the other partner
won't mind because of the ensuing benefits to their TV viewing.
The device so constructed should have sufficient bandwidth to
accommodate a wide range of TV channel frequencies, and the technical
partner's good sense can usually be relied upon to furnish any necessary
minor adjustments. The feed-points on the slot and the simple matching
technique are well documented in the RSGB Handbook and other popular
sources (which may be offered as a supplementary gift - perhaps
ostensibly to the children). A balun transformer is not really
essential, and in any case, silver bicycle pumps, hard drawn with
controlled annealing (which as we know make the best materials for a
coaxial sleeve balun) are in rather short supply at the present time.
[But it is useful if a friend can be found who has a well equipped
lathe, in case the couple also happen to have recieved silver ingots
with which they are not sure what to do...]
In the unlikely event that there should be any problem with the above
receiving aerial, then one trusts that the couple would not consider it
not too much cheek and impedance (or reactance) to a suggested melt-down
option. At least one can then cast one's aerial elements to suit many
possible alternative shapes and configurations according to choice. If
even this fails to work, then it would not be too difficult to arrange
for the entire contraption to change hands in an art gallery or auction
hall and realise a tidy profit.
The potential for amateur radio construction projects at silver weddings
is often overlooked and one feels that there could be many other ideas
which would merit an airing... [W.H.Y?]
