  1. Notes on WHAM 1.2
  2. -----------------

  4. WHAM (Waveform Hold and Modify) is a Windows 3.1 application for
  5. manipulating digitised sound. It can read and write Windows 3.1 WAVE files
  6. as well as raw eight-bit digitised sound files, and can perform various
  7. operations on this sound. WHAM can handle sounds of any size, restricted
  8. only by memory.
  9.  
  10. Since releasing version 1.1 onto the Internet, I was pleasantly surprised
  11. at the amount of interest shown in it. Thanks to all the people who sent
  12. me email reporting bugs and making suggestions.

  14. New features in release 1.2
  15. ---------------------------

  17. -    Many bugs fixed. i.e., WHAM no longer crashes when cutting/copying
  18.     sounds or stretching/shrinking large sounds. (Well, I hope it
  19.     doesn't, anyway... :-) )
  20. -    Resizable window.
  21. -    "Zoom in" function. WHAM can change the scale and scroll position to
  22.     show the selected portion of the current waveform in its entirety
  23.     at the largest possible magnification.
  24. -    Cursor in waveform window. Sound can be pasted at the cursor or
  25.     played from the cursor onwards.
  26. -    WHAM can be launched with a sound file name on the command line.
  27. -    WHAM is compliant with Windows 3.1's Drag-and-Drop technology, and
  28.     will accept files dropped from the File Manager.
  29. -    Enhanced button bar. The Save and Paste buttons reveal a drop-down
  30.     menu of buttons when clicked with the right button.

  32. New features in release 1.1

  35. -    WHAM can now read and write Creative Voice .VOC files, Amiga
  36.     IFF/8SVX sound files, Sun/NeXT .au (8-bit linear and Mu-Law)
  37.     and Apple/SGI AIFF files (although I cannot guarantee the
  38.     accuracy of the last format; at least one Macintosh application
  39.     rejects WHAM-written AIFF files).
  40. -    New display options. WHAM can now display the waveform at full or
  41.     half height, and in solid or outline form.
  42. -    Support for embedded information. WHAM can embed information (title,
  43.     copyright, date, software, artist*, engineer*, technician*,
  44.     comments*) in WAVE and IFF files, and read information that is in
  45.     these files. If    I find information formats for other file types
  46.     (and, preferably, examples of these formats in use), I will add
  47.     these.

  49. -    A more robust WAVE file reading mechanism (now recognises
  50.     information in files and acts accordingly.)
  51. -    More buttons at the top of the window.
  52. -    Many bugs/glitches have been removed.

  57. -    Drag-and-drop editing, a little like that in Microsoft Word for
  58.     Windows 2.0.
  59. -    More file formats. WHAM will be able to read (and, in most cases,
  60.     write) more types of files, as soon as I find new formats to
  61.     implement.
  62. -    Sound recording capability. As soon as I get access to a sound card,
  63.     I intend to put it in. (This release was coded using only a 
  64.     PC speaker driver). I actually purchased a sound card, but it
  65.     turned out to be defective, and I had to send it back. When I get
  66.     it back, I will put it to good use.
  67. -    Mu-Law and ADPCM support. Microsoft are putting support for Mu-Law
  68.     encoding and ADPCM compression in a new release of their RIFF
  69.     specifications. When I get access to an upgraded Windows multimedia
  70.     sound driver, I will adapt WHAM to manipulate Mu-Law-encoded sound
  71.     files in native format and to read and write ADPCM-compressed
  72.     sounds.
  73.     WHAM will then also be able to write Mu-Law .au files, as well as
  74.     linear ones.
  75. -    Support for 16-bit samples, stereo sounds, et cetera (...as soon as
  76.     I get some examples to experiment on and a stereo sound card.)
  77. -    High/low/band-pass filtering, independent pitch/speed changing and
  78.     other really good features, as soon as I figure out how to do them.

  105. less in one piece, from sample code distributed by Microsoft Corporation.
