Logitech Announces New Dimension in Interactive Computing: CyberMan(TM)
3-D Controller
Next-Generation Gaming Tool Combines True 3-D Capability and Tactile
Feedback with Affordability
Fremont, Calif. -- August 16, 1993 -- Logitech Inc., computer mouse
pioneer and international market leader in pointing devices and imaging
products, today announced CyberMan(TM) 3-D Controller, a major
technological advance in navigation devices for PC games. CyberMan
features true three-dimensional control previously unavailable outside
of the high-end workstation market. It also supplements the input
capability of traditional PC gaming tools, such as mice and joysticks,
with tactile feedback that can be linked to software events. While the
product can still operate as a standard 2-D mouse, it is specifically
designed for the interactive software entertainment market. It will be
available in October at a suggested retail price of $129. Optimized for
Gaming: CyberMan resembles a futuristic cross between a mouse and a
joystick, combining the features of these devices while adding
dimensionality and interactivity. Whereas a mouse or a joystick only
offers two degrees of freedom, CyberMan offers six degrees of freedom
in order to achieve full 3-D motion: X, Y, and Z axes in addition to
pitch, yaw, and roll. A motor integrated into the unit allows various
gaming events -- such as being struck or bumping into a wall -- to
actually be felt in addition to any sound or visuals the game may produce.
Mouse Compatibility and Software Support: CyberMan is 100-percent
compatible with existing Logitech mice and works with games that support
a mouse. However, to take advantage of the 3-D control and tactile
feedback, game developers must write specific drivers. To date, the
following software vendors have agreed to endorse CyberMan's interface
(known as SWIFT): Access Software Inc., Bethesda Softworks, Cyberdreams,
Electronic Arts, ID Software, Interplay Productions, Knowledge Adventure,
Looking Glass Technologies, New World Computing, Origin Systems,
Probotics, Sierra On-Line, Twin Dolphin Games, Virgin Games, and Westwood
Studios. Several software games will be included with the product when it
ships.
CyberMan's Market: CyberMan is targeted at serious PC game players,
especially those who frequently use first-person-perspective games in
which the screen display features sophisticated 3-D graphics to simulate
the protagonist's visual field. It is particularly suited to role-playing
games, which involve navigating passageways, selecting items, and
combating various enemies. With CyberMan, users can simulate actions that
were previously unavailable with a single device, such as jumping or
kneeling (through Vertical Control), leaning forward or back (through
Pitch Control), or looking left or right (through Yaw Control). When using
traditional 2-D joystick or mouse products, such actions require a
combination of pointing device and keyboard commands.
The Need for Tactile Feedback: By incorporating tactile feedback,
CyberMan expands the number of senses engaged in entertainment, more
closely resembling real-life sensory feedback. By "feeling" the action,
in addition to seeing and hearing it, the user perceives an enhanced
presence in the game.
"Logitech expects 3-D interactive technology to be driven by the
entertainment market," says Logitech product marketing manager, Scot
Schulte. "The gaming market typically serves as a proving ground for new
technologies, and its members are true early adopters."
System Requirements: 80386 or higher IBM PC or compatible; a free serial
port; and MS-/PC-DOS 3.3 or higher. Tactile feedback requires two AA
alkaline batteries or an AC adapter (optional). See individual games for
any additional requirements.
Logitech manufactures and markets "Senseware" -- products designed to give
"senses" such as sight, sound, and touch to the computer, making
human-to-computer communication more intuitive and natural. Logitech
International, the financial holding company for the Logitech Group, is
traded publicly in Switzerland on the Zurich and Geneva exchanges. With
operational headquarters in Fremont, Calif., the group maintains
manufacturing facilities in Fremont, California; Hsinchu, Taiwan;
Shanghai, China; and Cork, Ireland; and offices in major cities worldwide.
