NSHELL is a 'DOS Shell' program. Its purpose is to make file
selection and multiple-file operations more convenient by providing
a menu-driven interface instead of a C:\> prompt, which requires
repetitive retyping of DOS commands. It also includes a collection
of useful utilities, including a built-in text editor and an alarm
clock.
The main problems with many other DOS shell programs is that they use
up memory and they change the operating environment, causing your
programs to run more slowly, run out of memory, or even crash. NSHELL,
in contrast, only ties up about 120 bytes when running your program,
and is engineered to provide your programs with the identical environment
that they would have if they were running from the DOS command line,
avoiding both of these problems. NSHELL has also been extensively
tested in continuous use for safety and stability.
One of NSHELL's most powerful features is the ability to associate
any command with any filename. This is similar to the Mac's ability
to run a text editor by clicking on a document, but is more powerful.
You can, for example, lock out specific files or directories, or even
cause an attempt to run the file to sound an alarm by associating the
file's name with the internal command "BEEP". Or it can be used to
automatically give parameters to a program.
NSHELL has a number of additional features:
˛ Mouse or keyboard-driven menus.
˛ Timed execution of programs and DOS commands, with
options for daily execution and execution on specific days of
the week, or one-time execution.
˛ Copying, moving, renaming, or deleting of subdirectories with
a single keystroke. For example, pressing Alt-C can copy an
entire directory structure, including all its subdirectories,
to a floppy for backup.
˛ Change attributes of files and directories.
˛ Multiple-file operations - you can select files on the basis
of size, date, or file extension, or easily select an arbitrary
group of files, then copy, delete, move, etc. all at once.
˛ Rename, delete, move, copy, print, and/or execute any number
of files anywhere on your disk in a single operation.
˛ File finding and fast file search feature. Find a file anywhere
on your disk, or search a group of files for a text string.
˛ Screen blanking
˛ Time and date display including a large-size time display.
˛ Support for 43 and 50-line modes for EGA and VGA monitors.
˛ Multiple levels of password protection. For instance, NSHELL can
be configured to require a password for executing a file, or only for
dangerous commands.
˛ Keyboard locking facility
˛ File overwrite protection for COPY and file moving commands.
˛ Printing to a dot-matrix or laser printer, using a variety
of print styles such as bold, italic, compressed, etc. and for
laser printers, the ability to select from any font or size
which your printer is capable of generating.
˛ 1- or 2-column printing of files.
˛ Alarms (up to 500) may be set to give an audible alarm with
an arbitrary message at any date and time.
˛ View text and binary files of any size.
˛ A programmable batch file editor, which can execute DOS commands
singly or in sequence, for testing new batch files.
˛ A text editor with word wrap and paragraph justification.
˛ Each file can have a 3-line comment, enabling you to annotate
each file. This is like having long filenames, without the hassle.
˛ Scientific programmable calculator.
˛ Ability to associate command lines with file names transparently.
˛ File names can be displayed in upper- or lower-case. All menu colors
are reconfigurable.
