[9] Revision History of JUMBLE
---------------------------------
CHAPTER [1]: What is JUMBLE v3.0?
---------------------------------
JUMBLE is a DOOM item randomizer; it randomly places, objects,
enemies, and powerups in new locations. JUMBLE creates an entirely new
game, because nothing is in the same place twice! You can control how
JUMBLE places the objects. Maybe you want lots of Imps, health, or weapons.
All of this can be done with JUMBLE!
JUMBLE is very easy to use. It is completely menu driven, and adds
many new features since v2.0. It overcomes all other randomizers in
features, ease-of-use, and speed.
Note: id Software has requested that DOOM add-on utilities not work
with the shareware version of DOOM. JUMBLE and future releases from
<Empty> Productions will comply with this request.
--------------------------------------
CHAPTER [2]: Navigating through JUMBLE
--------------------------------------
In JUMBLE, you can either use the mouse or the keyboard. Using the
mouse is very simple. If you would like to give JUMBLE a command, just use
the mouse to press the button that activates it. You can check boxes by
clicking on the box, and move up and down in a window by using the side
scroll bar. JUMBLE uses "file folders" to switch between screens. To select
a different screen, just click on the tab of that folder.
Using the keyboard is simple as well. To activate a command, press
the key specified on the button that activates the command. To switch
between "file folders" press the [TAB] button. You may use the arrow keys
to move between check boxes, and activated scroll bars. The ALT key is
also used to activate hot keys.
--------------------------------------
CHAPTER [3]: Universal JUMBLE commands
--------------------------------------
The universal commands are the ones that are always displayed,
regardless of the "file folder" you are in.
Selecting "Random Number Seed" allows you to choose a four digit
number which is used to randomize the items in DOOM. This allows you to
duplicate another random setup later by using the previous seed.
Selecting "Get Random Seed" will cause the computer to
automatically generate a four digit number to be used as the seed.
Selecting "Exit" will exit the JUMBLE program.
Selecting "GO!" will cause JUMBLE to alter your DOOM WAD file with
the new item configuration you have selected in the "file folders."
Selecting "Credits/Greets" will display the JUMBLE credits,
information about JUMBLE, and show you what is soon to be released from
<Empty> Productions.
---------------------------------
CHAPTER [4]: Custom Configuration
---------------------------------
The Custom Configuation screen allows weighting of DOOM items. By
selecting "Random Use Picks," you can have JUMBLE automatically determine
the weights of objects. You may also weight objects yourself. An entire
list of DOOM objects is located in the interior window. The "Description
column displays the name of the item. The "Use" column specifes if the
object will appear in the game at all; "YES" is specified if it will and "NO"
if it will not. The "Times" column displays that item's weight. For
instance, if an Imp has a weight of 3, and a shotgun has a weight of 1, for
every three Imps there will be one shotgun.
The "Stats on Current Item" area displays what type of item is
highlighted. For instance, a green column is an impassable item, and a blue
bottle is health and a powerup.
---------------------------
CHAPTER [5]: Options Screen
---------------------------
The Options Screen allows you to choose what items are randomized,
without having to deal with the weighting system.
In the "Retain" section, you may choose to retain impassable items,
ammo, enemies, health, and powerups. When you retain items, JUMBLE holds
items from the default DOOM steup in their place. However, JUMBLE can still
use the same items in other positions. For instance, if you select "Retain
Enemies," JUMBLE will not change the positions of existing enemies, but may
add enemies in place of other items. Choosing "Retain Keycards" and
then setting all keycards on the Custom Configuration to "OFF" will place
keycards only in their default positions with no extras.
Selecting "Increase Enemy Difficulty By ONE" does just that. It
makes the enemies more difficult to deal with.
In the "JUMBLE" section, you may choose to alter the positions of
the keycards, the space marine starting locations, and the DEATHMATCH
starting locations. Jumbling the keycards may cause problems if a key card
is not available to open a locked door.
The "Maximum" section lets you specify the maximum amount of ammo,
armor, bosses, enemies, health, and powerups that will appear on a level.
The "No" section allows you to decide whether ammo, armor, bosses,
enemies, furniture, health, and powerups will appear on the levels.
Finally, the "Randomization Factor" decides how many of the items
will actually be moved. Unless this box is checked, the slide bar will not
change anything.
-----------------------------
CHAPTER [6]: Pre-Made JUMBLEs
-----------------------------
Pre-Made JUMBLEs are JUMBLE configurations which were previously
saved and allow you to reload and either edit them or use them on your DOOM
WAD file.
This "file folder" will display a directory tree which will in turn
allow you to load or save *.JBL files. When a *.JBL file is highlighted,
its description will appear in the "Description" area. If the *.JBL file is
corrupt or is not a valid JUMBLE file, then that area will say this.
JUMBLE comes with two nessecary *.JBL files. DEFAULT.JBL returns
your WAD file to the DOOM default. COMPLETE.JBL does this as well, but
should be used to restore netDOOM defaults and also can be used if your WAD
file has had major alterations.
After selecting a *.JBL file, JUMBLE will ask if you would like to
load or retrieve it. By loading it, JUMBLE will alter your DOOM WAD file
according to the configuration in the *.JBL. If retrieved, the
configuration will be loaded into memory, and JUMBLE will then allow you to
edit it.
By selecting "Save Current," JUMBLE will allow you to save your
current configuration in a *.JBL file. Upon doing this, JUMBLE will ask you
to enter a filename and a short description of the *.JBL file. JUMBLE will
then ask you if you would like to save the *.JBL as a "Tiny" or "Huge"
model. A Tiny model uses only 13k of space but saves only the item
replacements. A Tiny model also works much faster than a Huge model. A Huge
model uses 65k but saves locations, parts, rotation, and more. You must use
a Huge model for netDOOM games.

---------------------------------------
v3.0 - First full PUBLIC release of version 3.0
- Release as TWO files.
JUMBLE3.ZIP - Program, Support files, Documentation.
JUMBLE3S.ZIP - Supplimental Archive.

- More mouse support added elsewhere.
- Added "File Already There" error handling.
- a few Cosmetics.
v3.0b7 - Bug Fix release.
v3.0b6 - This *SHOULD* be the final beta.
Bugs fixed.
- in Pre-made JUMBLE directory picklist. Directory names
using the maximum characters allowed (ex. FILENAME.DIR)
wouldn't change directory properly and the screen got
screwed up when you did anything.
- Some of the Get Random Random number button wasn't "hot"
- Scroll bar in "Pre-made Jumbles" folder didn't update
properly when selecting via mouse.
- When NO ENEMIES was set the finished jumble didn't touch
Barons of hell in episodes 2 & 3. Even though in those
episodes they are *NOT* bosses.
v3.0b5 - Major round of bug fixes.
FIXED :
- Jumble Space marine didn't work. should now.
- Jumble <<DEATHMATCH>> didn't work. should now.
- Increase enemy by didn't work. should now.
- Scroll bar in "Pre-Made Jumbles" folder didn't update
properly. it left droppings
- No means of manually entering in the randomization factor.
added <ALT-F> command for this.
- directory names with periods "." now show up and change
correclty in "pre-made" jumbles.
- Selecting invalid names in "pre-made jumbles" and in the
"custom" pulldown menu now *NOT* allowed.
(Invalid = "......" for example)
- retains the locations of the highlight bar when moving from
folder to folder.
- retain enemies didn't work. should now.
- jumble marines also jumbled deathmatch start points
whether you chose them to or not.
- When you chose no boss's it left out cacodemons altogether.
Small round of cosmetics.
END screen changed. "look at the bottom note on it." :-)
v3.0b4.2- Mini BUG fix. cause system-hang if used too much.
v3.0b4.1- Fixed the JUMBLE routine. "Add one thing, ruin another"
v3.0b4 - STYLE sheets dropped for SAVE/RESTORE instead.
FULL keyboard support now. (yah!)
SAVE/RESTORE uses *.JBL files.
Should check for validity.
RESTORING your defaults now requires that you go to SAVE/RESTORE
and choose DEFAULT.JBL and allow JUMBLE to restore it.
OOPS button has been removed.
v3.0b3 - OOPS recovery now works. On *ALL* levels.
not just Episode 1 level 1. (guess 'OOPS' is appropriate)
v3.0b2 - Removed some menu items.
Organized other items.
added more items.
"OOPS" recovery WORKS now.
memory problems / hanging of machine FIXed.
Added SHAREWARE vs REGISTERED version test.
JUMBLE works to a limited extent.
Things that DO NOT work as of yet..
- Increase Enemy difficulty by ONE.
- Randomization Factor
- Retain size of enemies (Possibly will remove this option)
- Substitution random <blank> for <blank>
- Predefined Style are sketchy at best.
v3.0b1 - OK. This is a BETA so gimme a break.
Not much other than user interface worked.
Highlights.
- 50 line color VGA text.
- Mouse support (Full keyboard support in later version)
- Expanded RANDOM seed range. (0-9999)
- randomization factor
- Custom randomization-from list generation
- Turn off selected TYPES of items in final JUMBLE
- Keep selected TYPES of items in final JUMBLE
- Predefined JUMBLE configurations
v2.0 - After a persuasive recomendation from John Romero (forwarded
to me via Hank Leukart) stating that they Enjoyed the
v1.02 relase but please in all future add-on releases don't
touch the shareware release.
I removed the '-R' switch and used the ENTIRE item set
regardless to what version of DOOM the user is using.
[Well the memo wasn't specifically to ME from Mr. Romero
but it was generally directed towards people that make
"add-on"s for DOOM.
SO PLEASE if you make an add-on to DOOM don't touch the
SHAREWARE RELEASE. Otherwise iD might just take a more
LEGAL stance on add-on software.]
v1.02 - Whoops. stupid me thought EVERYONE who would use this had
the Full registered release.
added the '-R' switch.
It defaults to the SHAREWARE item set.
you must set this switch to use the "extra" items
v1.01 - Fixed that no start point bug by ignoring ALL startpoints.
v1.0 - First release it jumbled everything.
This caused problems.
Sometimes the Start points didn't showup. oops
