Hey there! Welcome to the Network Forensics Puzzle Contest. We've
created these puzzles for fun and to give lots of people the
opportunity to play around with packet captures. As network forensic
analysts, we're always looking for new tools and techniques, and so as
part of this contest we like to reward innovative and excellent
solutions with cool prizes.
"WARNING: This contest contains off-color humor which may not be appropriate for the classroom, children, rodents, etc. Real malware was used to create this contest, play at your own risk."
**GETTING STARTED
This CD contains the DEFCON 2013 contest, as well as supplemental
materials that may be useful for you. We recommend that you begin by
using a web browser to open the index.html file in the root of this
CD. From there, you can easily access:
- DEFCON 2013 Contest
- Tools - Lots of tools written for previous contests, which may come in handy for the current contest are available at forensicscontest.com.
- Utilities - We have included copies of Truecrypt and 7zip for different architectures on this CD.
** DEFCON 2013 Contest.
For DEFCON 2013, we've created a special puzzle contest. You can find the contest instructions, and encrypted volumes, which contain the contest rounds, in the DEFCON2013 folder.
Each Truecrypt volume contains a single round of the contest. You will need to mount the contest round's encrypted volume before you can access its contents. To be successful in the contest, you will need to solve the rounds in numerical order, beginning with Round 1. We will post the password for unlocking the first round on Friday, when the contest begins. Answer the question posed in each contest round, and submit your answers, per the instructions posted at the contest booth. If you are correct, you will receive the remaining information that you need to unlock the next round.
Please see the contest instructions posted at the booth for details.
