DEADLINE Release 1
Copyright (c) 1996 Millennium Interactive Ltd.
WIN 95 Installation
===================
To install the game in Windows 95, please run RUNME!.PIF and not install,
this will take you to the install program, from here choose your
installation directory and sound card.
Sound Card setup in Windows 95
==============================
Please note, the autodetection programme does not work as well in Win 95
as it does in DOS, please read the manuals that came with the sound card
and try to configure the sound card manually if it does not show on
screen what it says in your manual. This is most frequent with Sound
Blaster 8/16 compatibles.
Requirements
============
The game requires 8 Meg total memory with around 6 Meg free. If you have
problems getting this memory please try REMming out EMM386 and/or
Smartdrive from your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files.
The game also requires 400k base memory.
The game needs a Mouse driver in DOS to run. Most new DOS machines come
with a mouse driver supplied, if not then please contact the company you
bought your machine from. Please also note, that a Mouse driver that
works with Windows 3.x or Win 95 is NOT a DOS mouse driver, and a seprate
mouse driver is needed.
The game needs to be run in DOS mode with Windows 95 machines. The best
way to do this is to click on "Start" then "shut down" then "restart the
computer in MS-DOS mode".
The game needs either MS-DOS version 6:x or above or Windows 95 to run.
TECHNICAL PROBLEMS
==================
The following is a list of problems you MAY encouter when trying to run or
play Deadline.
- During testing a small number of machines experienced difficulties when
playing video. Whilst this is unfortunate it is unavoidable owing to the
way in that the CD driver accesses the disk. It may be that by
reconfiguring the way that your CD driver is set up (in CONFIG.SYS) you
will be able to solve this problem. Please refer to you CD user manual
for details on how to alter such things as 'read ahead buffering'.
- UNIVBE from Windows (not Win95)
Deadline will not run immediately after the installer from windows. You must
run it from DOS for the first time so that UVBELib can generate its required
driver files for your machine.
- On a small number of machines Deadline does not run correctly under windows.
If you find this you should run Deadline from DOS.
- If the display is corrupt or flickers badly trying running deadline with
different options (try -n and if that doesn't work -a). If it still doesn't
work run a VESA utility which came with your video card. If you haven't got
one of those you need to aquire the lastest version of UVCONFIG.EXE from
SciTech Software (www.scitechsoft.com).
- If Deadline stops beeping for an extended period of time during the screen
mode tests you should reset your machine and then run the game again by
typing "deadline -t". Deadline should then run correctly. You will not need
to specify the '-t' option in future. If you are running Windows or Win95
and it still does not work you should try running Deadline from a real mode
DOS prompt.
- If you are still having problems with Deadline you should run the options
program and select "None" as your sound card. If Deadline then runs correctly
the problem was caused by either the settings for your sound card being
incorrect or your sound card is not 100% SoundBlaster compatible.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
==========================
- If you can't change the Walk/Run/Crouch button on the plan screen for an
agent, this is because:
1) The agent has filled up his memory reserve of actions and so wont
accept any more nodes/actions.
or
2) The agent is not actually deployed onto the screen yet, waiting
off the edge of the map is NOT classed as being in the play area.
- If you find your agents run off after a terrorist as soon as they see them
and you would rather they stayed put because you have other plans for them,
then remember to change either their 'Initiative' status (turn off their
brains) or make them more aggressive (instead off running after someone they
will shoot them instead). But bear in mind that killing lots of people is
generally frowned on and could cause you to fail the mission.
- ALL characters in the game feature complex intelligence/behaviour routines
so don't be surprised to find things happening that you might consider 'odd'
(for example, hostages attacking terrorists and/or your agents, hostages
trying to administer first aid to your injured agents, your agents going
'berserk' after seeing lots of their team gunned down).
