  14.     - This program is intended as a small scale personal information manager
  15. for use under Microsoft Windows V3.1. I realize that there are many other
  16. programs available which handle much the same (or similar) functionalities,
  17. but in my experience, all these programs suffer from a common weakness - an
  18. everything-but-the-kitchen-sink list of "features", resulting in a
  19. more-or-less incomprehensible user interface and a
  20. more-difficult-than-necessary user learning curve.  PhoneBok is designed to
  21. be easy to learn, simple to use, and yet contain enough functionality to be
  22. useful in the "real world".

  24.     - It requires the "VBRUN300.DLL" file (not included here since it is
  25. widely available from most BBS's, Compuserve, etc - and it is rather large,
  26. so why force you to download something you probably already have when it's
  27. your nickel!) as well as four others mentioned below.

  29.     - This program offers you the ability to record and use personal
  30. information related to people (as in a "White Pages" type phone book), as
  31. well as information relating to companies (as in a "Yellow Pages" type phone
  32. book).

  34.     - You can cause PHONEBOK to Link people to companies to create your
  35. own phone listings for any company you want.  HINT:  Use this LINKing
  36. feature!  You won't be disappointed!
  37.  
  38.     - In addition, it provides a "To Do" list feature for managing various
  39. and sundry day-to-day items, allowing you to SORT, filter, etc (most of the
  40. main features I have found in other "To Do" list managers).

  44.                         DISTRIBUTION OF THIS PROGRAM

  48.     - This program may be freely copied and distributed for personal use.
  49. No fee is required for the use of this program, although the author of this
  50. program retains all rights of authorship (and will gratefully accept any and
  51. all donations of a monetary nature!).  The source code for this program
  52. is available - please contact me for details if you are interested.

  54.     - If you do chose to distribute this program, you *MUST* distribute the
  55. "PHONEBOK.EXE" file, the "PHONEBOK.HLP" file, the "HISTORY.TXT" file, and
  56. this "README.TXT" file together, unaltered.

  60.                             INSTALLATION AND USE

  64.     - In addition to "PHONEBOK.EXE", the following files are required to run
  65. this program ( all these files can be freely distributed ):
  66.  
  67.             COMMDLG.DLL
  68.             CMDIALOG.VBX
  69.             MSMASKED.VBX
  70.             VBRUN300.DLL
  71.             PHONEBOK.HLP

  74.     - The first four files above should be copied directly to your
  75. WINDOWS\SYSTEM subdirectory.  The "PHONEBOK.EXE" and the "PHONEBOK.HLP"
  76. files can be installed to any subdirectory on your heard disk EXCEPT THE
  77. ROOT DIRECTORY.  I recommend you create a subdirectory named, for example,
  78. "C:\PHONEBOK\" and put PHONEBOK.EXE into this subdirectory.  Note that the
  79. "PHONEBOK.HLP" file MUST be in the same subdirectory as "PHONEBOK.EXE".  So
  80. do all your data files (see below).

  82.     - With the exception of "VBRUN300.DLL", all files necessary for use are
  83. included in the original distribution file.  If you did not receive all the
  84. files you need, please feel free to contact me at the address above if you
  85. need help in getting them.

  88.     - During normal operation, PHONEBOK.EXE will use the following files:
  89.  
  90.         PERSDATA.SGD - contains your "White Pages" personal info
  91.         CORPDATA.SGD - contains your "Yellow Pages" corporate info
  92.         TODOITEM.SGD - contains your "To Do" list data
  93.         COCAPTNS.SGD - contains the text of your Corporate Grouping Criteria
  94.                        / Filters.  Note that I have included a
  95.                        "default" set along with this program, but that
  96.                        you can change the text of any or all of these items
  97.                        at your convenience.
  98.         PDCAPTNS.SGD - contains the text of your Personal Grouping Criteria
  99.                        / Filters.  Again, I have included a "default" set to
  100.                        get you started.

  102.         The following file is OPTIONAL, and is NOT created nor maintained by
  103. PhoneBok, although the data IS used by PhoneBok during normal operation (if
  104. you don't want to be bothered creating it, you don't have to!)
  105.  
  106.         USERDATA.SGD - THIS FILE MUST BE CREATED BY YOU USING A PLAIN
  107.                        TEXT EDITOR (the MS-DOS "EDIT" program, or even "EDLIN",
  108.                        will work fine.  So will any word processor which can
  109.                        save its output files as plain ASCII text).
  110.                      - This file contains data specific to YOU which can be
  111.                        used by PHONEBOK during normal execution, defined in
  112.                        the following way (NOTE: you MUST leave a blank line
  113.                        for any item you do not want to use - this file MUST
  114.                        contain 6 lines even if you use only one of them!)

  116.                     Line 1 - your full name
  117.                     Line 2 - your company title, if any
  118.                     Line 3 - your nickname (how cute can I get, huh?)
  119.                     Line 4 - your street address (part 1)
  120.                     Line 5 - your street address (part 2)
  121.                     Line 6 - your City, State, and Zip code
  122.  
  123.     - The above files MUST be located in the same subdirectory as the
  124. PHONEBOK.EXE file.

  127.     - NOTE:  Do NOT attempt to edit any of these files with any word
  128.             processor or text editor!  PHONEBOK.EXE allows you all the
  129.             editing features you need.
  130.              If you are technical, and have the inclination, these files can
  131.             be edited using a disk sector editor - AT YOUR OWN RISK, of
  132.             course!

  134.     - NOTE:  Each entry in your "Yellow Pages" or your "White Pages" phone
  135.             books requires 2,048 bytes of disk storage space.
  136.              Each entry in your "To DO" list requires 512 bytes of disk
  137.             storage space.
  138.              The ultimate size of your data files is determined by available
  139.             disk space.  HOWEVER, the "Export" functions are currently
  140.             limited to a maximum of approx 500 records.

  144.                                 OUTPUTS

  148.     PhoneBok provides three different types of outputs, depending on which
  149. menu choice you make.
  150.  
  151.     [1] Direct to printer - these reports (the "Full Details" and the "?
  152.         Line Summary") send their output directly to the printer.  I have
  153.         formatted these outputs for both LaserJet and Dot Matrix printers.
  154.  
  155.         NOTE:  You *MUST* have either the "Arial" or the "Times New Roman"
  156.         TrueType font (which came as part of the Microsoft Windows software)
  157.         installed and available in order to use these output options.

  159.     [2] Direct to Microsoft Word for Windows or Microsoft Write.  These
  160.         outputs are the "Letter" and the "Memo" reports, which simply use
  161.         your choice of one of these word processors to create a simple
  162.         personal letter or business type memo, and then allow you to fill in
  163.         the body of the letter/memo, then save it or print it, etc.  If I
  164.         had access to more different Windows-based word processors, I could
  165.         offer more choices for this!

  167.     [3] Direct to Microsoft Word for Windows. These are named "Export"
  168.         outputs, and use the capabilities found specifically in Word
  169.         for Windows to create "merge table" documents, which can in turn be
  170.         used to create mass mailings, mailing labels, envelopes, etc.
  171.         Again, if I had access to more different Windows-based word processors,
  172.         I could offer more choices for this!
