Chapter 1 - Introduction.
- 1.1 - FootPrint Program Description.
FootPrint is a Drive Activity Monitor. It's report shows
modified, added and missing files.
Use FootPrint before and after a software install,
especially for Windows applications.
<SOFTWARE TRACKING MODE>
Uninstalling software is NEVER a mystery when you
use Footprint.
Use FootPrint daily from your AUTOEXEC.BAT with the /SCAN
command line option. At bootup, once each day, a new
footprint file is created. A powerful research tool!
Saves 7 days of information. <AUTOMATIC MODE>.
For PC Audits, run FootPrint from a floppy;
Each machine can have a separate audit identity.
<AUDIT MODE>.
FootPrint is Shareware. Registration is $22+$4 S+H for
a single PC and includes a laser printed manual.
Additional PC's cost $15 each. Site Licenses are available.
A non display Quiet mode is available for registered
users; used to scan a PC without user's knowledge (/Quiet).

Chapter 2 - Using FootPrint
- 2.1 - The 3 Modes of Operation.
- Before beginning to use FootPrint, it's important to
understand the 3 primary operation modes.
- Automatic, Software Tracking, and Auditing modes are all
similar, but since there are 3 different ways to use
FootPrint, each is documented separately.
- Use Automatic Mode when you desire FootPrint to keep a
daily log of all changes to your hard drives.
- Use Software Tracking Mode before a software installation
or whenever you want to create a change report.
- Use Auditing mode from a floppy disk whenever a PC software
audit is required.
- 2.2 - Automatic Mode.
- Automatic Mode lets users keep a daily log of all hard
drive files so that a daily change report can be created
at any time.
- Automatically creates a "FootPrint" file, and it is created
only once at the first bootup of the day.
- Follow these steps to install FootPrint in Automatic Mode:
1) Copy FP.EXE and FPLIST.EXE to a DOS path directory.
Most PC's have a UTILITY directory. To display your PATH
directories, type PATH at the DOS prompt.
2) Execute FP. Use option 'F - Configure'. I recommend you
make a new FootPrint Directory for FootPrint Files.
Refer to Doc section 'CONFIGURE'.
3) Edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT file: After the PATH= statement
add this line: 'FP /SCAN'.
>>> It Is EXTREMELY important you add FP AFTER the PATH= <<<
4) Alternatively, you may add 'FP /SCAN /QUIET /FILES:10'
to have a quiet scan, and to save 10 footprint files.
FILES:7 is the default if not specified. /QUIET hides the
fact FootPrint is running in registered versions only.
5) Next, you should reboot and test the installation.
6) Use option 'D - Determine Changes' to create a report.
See section 'Creating Reports' for more information.
FootPrint User's Manual ------------------------------ Page 5
- 2.3 - Software Tracking Mode.
- Software Tracking Mode tracks changes before and after
a software installation. Or, whenever you need to research
a problem.
- Follow these steps to install Software Tracking Mode:
1) If you've installed automatic mode, skip to step 4.
2) Copy FP.EXE and FPLIST.EXE to a DOS path directory.
Most PC's have a UTILITY directory. To display your PATH
directories, type PATH at the DOS prompt.
3) Execute FP. Use option 'F - Configure'. I recommend you
make a new FootPrint Directory for FootPrint Files.
Refer to Doc section 'CONFIGURE'.
4) Use option 'C' - Create a FootPrint File. See section
'Create a FootPrint File' in this documentation.
5) Perform the software installation or just use your
PC for awhile.
6) When the installation ends, you're ready to see what
changed on your system. Execute FP and use option 'D'
to determine changes. See the section, 'Creating Reports'
for more detail.
FootPrint User's Manual ------------------------------ Page 6
- 2.4 - Auditing Mode.
- These procedures are only for Auditors who must document
changes occurred on a user's computer. All others should
ignore these procedures.
- Autitors should follow these steps:
1) Prepare a floppy disk for FootPrint by copying FP.EXE
onto it. A single 1.4M floppy should be large enough
for 6 different PC's.
2) Name each PC you will be auditing. FootPrint stores
footprint files for each PC name in a separate directory.
3) On the user's PC, insert the floppy and change the DOS
prompt to the floppy (A: or B:).
4) Execute FP and configure it. See section 'Configuring
FootPrint'. Assign the FootPrint File path to a floppy
drive. Do not assign a PC name at this time.
5) Use FP option 'C - Create' for each PC you are autiting.
Remember to assign a name for each PC. On the floppy,
a separate directory will be created for each PC.
6) When finished with the initial scans, backup the floppy
to make sure it doesn't have errors.
7) When ready to complete the audit, obtain the original
footprint disks.
8) Once again, go to each machine, use FP option 'C',
and scan the drives. Enter the correct PC name or the
audit will not be accurate.
9) When finished with each PC, you may take the diskette
back to your own computer, and process the reports
at your desk using option 'D'.
- 2.5 - Extremely Large Drives.
- When using FootPrint on extremely large drives, you
may experience an out of memory condition.
- Limit the number of drives scanned by:
- Use FootPrint option 'F' - Configure.
- Add drive letters to NEVER SCAN drive configuration.
- Exit configuration and test.
FootPrint User's Manual ------------------------------ Page 7
- 2.5 - FootPrint Command Line Switches.
- These options are used after 'FP' on the DOS prompt.
- FP /? -
- Use /? to view the online tutorial for FootPrint.
- FP /SCAN -
- Use /SCAN to automatically perform a footprint scan of your
drives.
- Scans are performed once each day. I recommend adding
FP to your AUTOEXEC.BAT, or add FP /SCAN as a timer
event if your system stays up all the time.
- If FP detects a previous scan file which contains today's
date, it will not process a scan.
- If the CONFIGURE screen is displayed each time a scan
is run you need to:
- Check the location of FP.EXE in your AUTOEXEC.BAT.
Is it after the PATH= statement?
- See if FP.EXE is actually in a DOS path directory.
- Advanced DOS users who do not want FP.EXE in a path
directory can run FP from any directory, as long as
it is the one you 'Change' to before executing.
- /QUIET -
- /QUIET requires use of /SCAN to be functional.
- Use when you want FP to perform it's scan without user
knowledge.
- The shareware registration reminder is displayed in the
shareware version. You must register to effectively use
this option.
- /FILES:7 -
- /Files:NN requires use of /SCAN to be functional
- This controls the auto cleanup of FootPrint (.FPT) files.
- Use /FILES:365 to save the maximum number of FPT files.
- Use /FILES:1 to only save one single FPT file.
- /Files:7 is the default used when /FILES:NN not specified.
FootPrint User's Manual ------------------------------ Page 8
- 2.6 - FootPrint Report.
- This section contains an example FootPrint report.
- FootPrint's report contains 3 sections: 1) Modified Files
2) Added Files 3) Missing Files.
- An example of FootPrint's report header is:
- 0001 -

As Of: 05/27/93 at 13:23 OLSEN FootPrint Date: 05/27/93 at 12:56
- The 'As Of' date is either the SCAN date and time or
the date of the FPT file used to replace the scan.
- OLSEN is the PC name.
- The 'FootPrint Date' is the date and time of the .FPT
file used for input.
- The Modified report looks like this:

FootPrint User's Manual ------------------------------ Page 10
- 3.2 - F - Configure FootPrint.
- Configuration is recommmended, although FootPrint saves
an automatic configuration file at the first execution.
- If FP.EXE is not in a DOS path directory or floppy,
FootPrint may not be able to identify the configuration
file (FPT.CFG), and the configuration information will not
be saved between executions. To correct this situation:
- Copy FP.EXE to a DOS path Directory.
- or, make sure you are always executing FP at the
same DOS directory prompt (CFG saved in current dir).
- or, if floppy, be sure the DOS prompt is on A: or B:
- Here is an example configuration screen:

- FootPrint File Path.
- Enter a directory to save FootPrint .FPT files.
- Every time you 'Create' or /SCAN a drive, FootPrint
will put the results in this directory. If you specify
a PC Name, another subdirectory will be created.
- Report Path:
- Enter an existing directory to save report files.
- This directory can be changed before you create a report.
FootPrint User's Manual ------------------------------ Page 11
- 3.2 - F - Configure FootPrint (Continued)
- Default PC Name:
- The name of your PC is added to the FootPrint File Path.
Each different PC is saved in a unique directory.
- Only Auditors should use PC Name. If PC name is blank,
FootPrint files are saved in the FootPrint Path.
- When configuring for Audits, leave this field blank. Enter
a PC Name when you create a FootPrint file.
- List Program Name:
- I recommend LIST.COM by Vernon Buerg. He's done a very
nice job.
Authors Address: Vernon Buerg
139 White Oak Circle
Petaluma, CA 94952
- I've included FPLIST.EXE with this release. It contains
most of the functions you will need for Viewing and
Searching the FootPrint Report. You may use FPLIST as
a LIST.COM replacement.
- Force Scan Drives:
- Enter any additional drive letters you wish to have added
to the FootPrint scan.
- FootPrint uses a fairly conservative hard drive search
routine. If you have networked, removeable, or other
non-standard DOS drives, add them here.
- If the drive is not available at scan time, a NOT READY
error will be displayed. Use 'Cancel' or hit escape to
bypass the scan of a 'NOT READY' drive.
- Never Scan Drives:
- If you wish to remove a drive from automatic scan, add
the drive letter here.
- Add the drive letter that consistently returns a
'NOT READY' error. The drive will be ignored during
FootPrint's scan.
- OUT of MEMORY errors can be fixed by adding a drive here.
FootPrint User's Manual ------------------------------ Page 12
- 3.2 - F - Configure FootPrint (Continued)
- Report Options:
- The remainder of the configuration deals with report
options.
- Detail:
- To conserve report space, Detail=N, may be chosen.
- Detail=N only lists the filenames and directories
that were modified, added, or missing.
- Detail=Y is recommended. The report is larger, but
contains much more useful information
- Rpt Page Length:
- This defaults to 59 lines per page, which is the setting
for most laser printers.
- If you have a dot-matrix printer, use 65 for page length.
- You may use any page length up to 99.
- Modified Report:
- Defaults to 'Y'
- Change to 'N' to skip modified file reporting.
- New File Report
- Defaults to 'Y'
- Change to 'N' to skip new file reporting.
- Missing Report.
- Defaults to 'Y'
- Change to 'N' to skip missing file report.
- Report Attribute Flag Changes:
- Defaults to 'Y'
- Change to 'N' to ignore attribute flags when determining
modified files.
- Since many backup systems change the attribute flag,
you may want to change this option to 'N' if too many
files are listed with only an 'A' flag change.
FootPrint User's Manual ------------------------------ Page 13
- 3.3 - C - Create a FootPrint File.
- This option creates a footprint index file of all your
hard drives.

- Used for Software FootPrints and Auditing, you hardly
ever have to change these settings except as follows:
- FootPrint Path:
- This is the configuration path for storing .FPT files.
- Normally, you do not need to change this field, just
press enter to accept the configured FootPrint path.
- If you enter a non-existing directory, FootPrint will
ask if you want to create one. Type 'Y'.
- FootPrint will not 'remember' changes to the path name.
Use CONFIGURE to permanently change FootPrint Path.
- Auditors should make sure this is a floppy drive.
- PC Name:
- This is the PC Name you configured.
- Autitors should use a different PC name for each PC being
audited.
- Use PC Name ONLY for Auditing. A PC name is not required.
- FootPrint File.
- All footprint files end with .FPT, so that FootPrint can
identify the files easily.
- You may change the beginning of the filename to any
name you wish.
- If you are using Automatic Mode, I recommend using
a filename format of DYYMMDDA - 'D' with year, month
and day followed by a letter. This format is the
only way you can be positive old footprint files are
deleted properly.
FootPrint User's Manual ------------------------------ Page 14
- 3.3 - C - Create a FootPrint File (Continued).
- After verifying the path, PC name, and filename, press
enter to begin the drive scan.
- The drive scan shows you the status of each directory
as it's being scanned.
- If you receive a 'Drive Not Ready' error, you can either
fix the error, or move the cursor to CANCEL to skip scan
of the drive. The drive scan will continue without not
ready drive.
- When the scan finishes, each drive and directory scanned
will be displayed for your information. If a drive is not
included in the scan, use the configuration option to add
it to 'Force Scan' drives.
- An example of the results display follows:

FootPrint User's Manual ------------------------------ Page 15
- 3.4 - D - Determine Drive Changes.
- This options creates a FootPrint Report.
- It has dual use:
1) To compare a previous FootPrint index to the
current hard drive structure
2) To compare a previous FootPrint index to another
previous FootPrint index, so you can see what
changed in prior days or scans.
- The Determine Drive Changes screen is displayed below:

- Most of these input fields are preloaded with the proper
information, so they don't have to be changed.
- FootPrint Path:
- Usually, the configured footprint path is correct.
Just press enter to skip field.
- AUDITORS should set this to a floppy drive.
- PC Name:
- The PC name that is configured will be displayed.
You need not change the PC name.
- Auditors should enter the correct PC name here.
FootPrint will look for this directory on your floppy.
- Report:
- A default report name is preloaded. You may change
the filename, or directory location if desired.
- Scan Drives:
- Reply 'Y' (Default) to scan the drives, and use the
current drive status in the report.
- Reply 'N' to use another footprint file instead of the
current scan.
- Auditors should reply 'N' so they can compare
two footprint files.
FootPrint User's Manual ------------------------------ Page 16
- 3.4 - D - Determine Drive Changes (Continued).
- Report only Executables:
- Default=N, show all types of files in the report.
- Auditors should reply 'Y' to show only
'EXE COM OVL BIN' file changes.
- Create a new FootPrint File:
- Default=N. Will only process the report
- Reply 'Y' only if you are scanning drives. A new FPT
file will be created after the scan, just like you had
run option 'C - Create FootPrint File'.
- Filename:
- Only important if you are creating a New FootPrint File.
This is the name of the footprint file. Automatic mode
users should name the file DYYMMDDA - 'D' followed by
year, month, day, and any letter. This keeps the /SCAN
cleanup in proper order.
- Press enter to begin report process. You will be prompted
with a yes/no question before overlaying files.
- Now, select the FootPrint file to be used as input:

considered as 'current' on report.

The scan will be sorted, and the report will be created.
- Once the report is created, you will be asked to press
enter to view the report, if you have configured a list
program. Otherwise, you will return to the main panel.
In either case, the report will be saved in the path you
specified.

- A - Appendix
- I'd like to take the time to thank each one of you BETA
testers for QuickDir and FootPrint.
- Thanks again, John. You keep on thinking, I keep on coding.
- Also, thanks again to my wife, who's patience and love
make these products possible.
- And again, Thanks to the One who loves. I never thought I'd
make it this far, but He made me "more than an overcomer".
