============================
Instant DOOM(tm) Levels
Sams Publishing
============================
------------------------------------------------------------------------
What's on the CD-ROM
------------------------------------------------------------------------
* More than 1,000 additional game levels
* Instructional sample level (.wad) files discussed in the electronic book
* A collection of the finest level editors, tools, and utilities available,
including special editions or registered versions of the main editors
discussed in the electronic book
-----------------------------------------------------------
Installing the DOS software
-----------------------------------------------------------
To install the DOS programs from the CD-ROM,
1. From a DOS prompt, change to the drive that contains
the CD-ROM. For example, if the disc is in drive D,
type D: and press Enter.
2. Type \DOOMCD and press Enter.
You will see an installation application which features buttons for each
DOS application discussed in the book. Use your mouse to select the
application of your choice.
Each application will display a separate page with install options,
giving you the choice to install the software, view the software's
documentation, and print the software's documentation. Use the buttons
along the bottom of the page to navigate around the installation
application. The arrow keys allow you to leaf through each page and the
MENU button returns you to the main menu. Press the HELP button at any
time to review the navigation methods.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Installing the Windows software
-----------------------------------------------------------
To install the Windows applications from the CD-ROM,
1. Start Windows.
2. Select Run from the Program Manager File menu.
3. Type D:\SETUP, where D is the letter of your CD-ROM
drive.
4. Follow the instructions provided by the setup program.
The Windows installation application will create a Program Group
named "DOOM Utilities," which contains icons for installing the Windows
programs included on the disc. Click on the ReadMe icons for
program-specific details.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Using the CD-ROM
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Most of the editors and utilities and some of the level files included
on this disc must be copied to your hard drive to function properly.
The DOS and Windows install applications will copy the utilities and
applications to your hard drive for you. Refer to the respective chapters
in the electronic book and the documentation files accompanying the programs
on the CD-ROM for detailed instructions about configuring and using the
programs.
To make playing the WADs from the CD-ROM easier, the WAD files for each
game appear in:
* \DOOM1\PLAY
* \DOOM2\PLAY
* \HERETIC\PLAY
Use these CD-ROM directories as the locations of WAD files in front-end
DOOM loading tools like DOOM-IT. The \PLAY directories include only those
WADs that can be played from the CD-ROM without special configuration.
To install DOOM-IT, start the DOOMCD menu program (see the instructions
opposite the CD-ROM or in the "Installing software from the CD-ROM"
section in this file). This program is located under the "Entering the
Abyss" section of the DOOMCD menu.
See the file PLAYING.TXT, or the Chapter on DOOM-IT in the electronic
book, for instructions on using this tool to play the game levels from
the CD-ROM.
Other WADs and patches can be copied to your hard drive to be played.
Please refer to the documentation with the WADs and patches for specific
instructions. The patches (example: \DOOM1\WADS\PATCHES) will alter
your original WAD files (DOOM.WAD, etc.) or the game executable
(DOOM.EXE, etc.), so be sure to backup your game before experimenting!
Most patches provide batch files to extract original graphics and sound,
replacing them with new objects. These batch files will usually save
the original objects, so they can be restored with a de-installing
batch file. This can be a safe operation, but errors are possible, and
that can leave you with corrupt game files. Make backups!
------------------------------------------------------------------------
How the CD-ROM is Organized
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level editors and general utilities which are discussed in this book can
be found in the directories \EDITORS and \UTILS. All other editors,
tools, and utilities are located in \BONUS.
The ready-to-play game levels are located in the \WADS directory.
They are separated into three main categories:
DOOM levels: \WADS\DOOM1\PLAY
DOOM II levels: \WADS\DOOM2\PLAY
Heretic levels: \WADS\HERETIC\PLAY
See the file PLAYING.TXT for more information on how to play these
extra game levels.
Because of copyright issues, some of the files discussed in Episode 3,
"The Land of the Gods" are not included on the CD-ROM. See Episode 5,
Mission 1, Room 2, "Places to Go and People to See" (in the electronic
book) for places where you can get these files on the Internet.
