  3. Installing HoTMetaL PRO 5.0 Evaluation Version
  4. **********************************************

  6. Welcome to HoTMetaL PRO 5.0 Evaluation Version. 
  7.  
  8. This is a 'time-bombed' version that will stop working 
  9. 30 days from the day you installed it. We advise against 
  10. resetting your PC's system clock during the evaluation 
  11. period. The clock may be set back by small amounts of time to
  12. allow for switching between Standard Time and Daylight Time.
  13. Setting the clock back longer amounts of time will cause
  14. HoTMetaL PRO 5.0 Evaluation Version to stop working. 
  15. If you set your clock ahead, the software will not stop working 
  16. automatically, but this will of course shorten your 
  17. evaluation period. Once the 30-day evaluation period 
  18. has expired, the software cannot be re-installed and used again.

  20. This document has information on:
  21.     - System requirements
  22.     - Installing HoTMetaL PRO
  23.     - Uninstalling and re-installing HoTMetaL PRO
  24.     - Possible installation problems

  28. After you have installed HoTMetaL PRO, see the file
  29. "readme.wri" and the HoTMetaL PRO online help for more

  34. System requirements
  35. ===================
  36.  
  37. HoTMetaL PRO 5.0 Evaluation Version runs on Windows 95, 98, and NT 4.0.
  38. Your system must have the following, or higher:
  39. *   Pentium processor (Pentium 100 MHz or above recommended)
  40. *   16 MB of available RAM (32 MB RAM or more recommended)
  41. *   Super VGA display, 256 colors, 640 x 480 resolution
  42. *   26 MB of disk space
  43. *   40 MB extra disk space during installation
  44. *   On Windows NT 4.0, Service Pack 3 must be applied before you 
  45.     install and use HoTMetaL PRO 5.0.

  48. Installing HoTMetaL PRO 5.0 Evaluation Version
  49. ==============================================

  51. There were two options for downloading the HoTMetaL
  52. files over the Web. The steps for installing
  53. the product are different for each option.
  54.  
  55. Option 1: If you downloaded the product in one piece,
  56. then the file "hm5ev.exe" should be present on your system. 
  57.  
  58. Option 2: If you downloaded the product in three pieces,
  59. then the files "hm5ev_1.exe", "hm5ev_2.exe", and "hm5ev_3.exe"
  60. should be present on your system.
  61.  
  62. You will need approximately 65 MB of free disk space in order 
  63. to install HoTMetaL PRO 5.0 Evaluation Version. Approximately
  64. 40 MB of this will become free again after the install has completed.
  65. The HoTMetaL PRO 5.0 Evaluation Version software occupies
  66. approximately 26 MB of disk space.
  67.  
  68. If you chose Option 1
  69. ---------------------
  70.  
  71. 1. Double click on "hm5ev.exe".
  72.  
  73. This will extract the HoTMetaL PRO files from the archive that
  74. you downloaded, and will start the HoTMetaL installer.
  75.  
  76. 2. Follow the instructions given by the installer.
  77.  
  78. Note: The default installation folder is HoTMetaL PRO 5 Eval.
  79. If you already have HoTMetaL PRO 4.0, or any earlier 
  80. version of HoTMetaL, on your PC, *do not* install HoTMetaL PRO 5.0 
  81. Evaluation version in the same folder as any of these products.
  82.  
  83. 3. Make sure that HoTMetaL PRO can be launched  successfully.
  84.  
  85. 4. You can now delete the file "hm5ev.exe". 
  86.  
  87. If you chose Option 2
  88. ---------------------
  89.  
  90. If you downloaded three files, carry out the following steps:
  91.  
  92. 1. Double-click on "hm5ev_1.exe".
  93.  
  94. This will extract part 1 of the HoTMetaL PRO files from the archive
  95. that you downloaded. 
  96.  
  97. During this process, you will be asked to enter the Installation 
  98. Directory (folder) into which the files should be extracted. 
  99. This is a temporary folder that you will delete when the 
  100. installation is complete.  
  101.  
  102. 2. After all files in part 1 have been extracted, part 2 (hm5ev_2.exe) 
  103. will be run automatically, then part 3 (hm5ev_3.exe).
  104.  
  105.  
  106. Make sure to specify the *same* installation folder each time. 
  107.  
  108. You will get an error if:
  109.     - you have not downloaded all 3 files to begin with
  110.       (hm5ev_1.exe, hm5ev_2.exe, hm5ev_3.exe)
  111.     - you did not start by extracting part 1 (hm5ev_1.exe).
  112.  
  113. You can easily correct this by downloading any missing files.
  114. Then start by extracting part 1 again (say "yes to all" to overwrite files
  115. that you extracted the first time).
  116.  
  117. 3. After you have extracted all three parts into the installation folder,
  118. go to the installation folder and double-click on "Setup.exe" to install.
  119.  
  120. 4. Follow the instructions given by the installer.
  121.  
  122. Note: The default installation folder is HoTMetaL PRO 5 Eval.
  123. If you already have HoTMetaL PRO 4.0, or any earlier 
  124. version of HoTMetaL, on your PC, *do not* install HoTMetaL PRO 5.0 
  125. Evaluation version in the same folder as any of these products.

  127. 5. Make sure that HoTMetaL PRO can be launched successfully.
  128.  
  129. 6. You can now delete the files "hm5ev_1.exe", "hm5ev_2.exe", and
  130. "hm5ev_3.exe", and the temporary installation folder and all the 
  131. files and folders that it contains.

  133. Uninstalling and re-installing
  134. ===============================

  137. To uninstall HoTMetaL PRO 5.0 Evaluation Version:
  138. 1. From the Windows Start menu, choose Settings, and then Control Panel.
  139. 2. Double-click on Add/Remove Programs.
  140. 3. Choose SoftQuad HoTMetaL PRO 5.0 Evaluation from the list.
  141. 4. Click on Add/Remove.
  142. 5. To re-install, follow the installation instructions again.

  144.  
  145. Possible installation problems
  146. ==============================
  147.  
  148. Anti-virus programs can interfere with installation
  149. ---------------------------------------------------
  150.  
  151. Anti-virus programs sometimes interfere with the installation
  152. process, causing the installer to hang, usually within a short time
  153. after it starts up. If you encounter this problem, and you have any
  154. type of anti-virus program installed on your PC, disable it while
  155. you are installing HoTMetaL PRO.
  156.  
  157.  
  158. Installer sometimes fails to register DLLs and OCXs
  159. ---------------------------------------------------
  160.  
  161. If the HoTMetaL installer gives you an error message indicating that
  162. it did not register the required DLL and OCX files, you can complete
  163. this step by running a script, as explained here:
  164.     - Choose MS-DOS Prompt from the Programs menu
  165.     - Change directory to the system folder (usually C:\windows\system)
  166.     - Run the script by typing 'fixocx.bat' (no quotes)
  167.       at the MS-DOS prompt
  168.     - If any errors occur, open the script file with a text editor,
  169.       identify the lines that caused the errors (just look for
  170.       the OCX or DLL name that appeared in the error
  171.        message), and enter each of those lines individually at the
  172.       MS-DOS prompt.
  173.  
  174. Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 and Active Desktop
  175. ==================================================
  176.  
  177. HoTMetaL PRO 5.0 uses Internet Explorer components in its
  178. implementation of the following features: the Asset tab in the
  179. Resource Manager, WYSIWYG-Frames view, Page Preview, Site Maker
  180. preview, and macros. Additionally, the Thumbnail View and the Open
  181. dialog preview window require that Microsoft Active Desktop be
  182. installed.
  183.  
  184. HoTMetaL PRO 5.0 will still operate on Windows 95 and NT 4.0 if
  185. Internet Explorer and Active Desktop are not installed, but these
  186. features will be unavailable. On Windows 98, these features will
  187. always be available.
  188.  
  189. For best results, you should have Internet Explorer version
  190. 4.70.3110.8 or later installed on your PC; if you use an older
  191. version, some of the features listed above may not work correctly.
  192.  
  193. To obtain Internet Explorer, go to Microsoft's site at
  194. http://www.microsoft.com/ and download the latest version of
  195. Internet Explorer 4.0. Internet Explorer is language-specific; if
  196. you are using a non-English version of Windows, make sure that you
  197. download  the version (plus service pack if required) that applies
  198. to your system.

  200. Updates to MSIE
  201. ---------------

  203. Microsoft regularly provides updates to their software. We strongly
  204. recommend that you visit http://www.microsoft.com to get any
  205. patches or updates to Microsoft Internet Explorer.
